I am thankful that there are people who specialize in the medical care of animals. I want to give a shout out to my Vets at Greater South River Animal Hospital. Dr. Cate, Dr. Dan, and the new doc, Dr. Kim.
Funny how the dogs have had very few medical problems until I lost my job. Now it seems we are at the vet every week. It is my job as their human caretaker to ensure that they stay well, and though a great internet researcher, I would never try to medicate my animals on my own. Different breeds react differently to medicines and particularly the herding breeds, like Sofie (Shetlands, Collies, etc.). For example, I gave Louise (Hound/Lab) Ivemectin when she was little for her Demodex, but learned that it could kill a Sheepdog. (Warning: another thing to watch is heartworm medicine.)
Last month, as you may recall, Sofie was in a cone and on antibiotics because she almost lost her nail from a bad nail clipping event at PetSmart. As soon as she was done, Louise got a puncture in her private place (probably from pooping in bushes) and is still on antibiotics. Yesterday, I noticed these scabs all over Sofie’s belly. I was freaking – I jumped to SCABBIES! With 5 animals and a house full of humans that would be almost as bad (or worse) then when Peanut had lice in 2d grade, with hair down to her bottom, and no matter how many medicated shampoos I did, they would not die. All bedding, stuffed toys, carpets, everything needs to be fumigated – but I digress…
Off to the Vet we go, and I brought Louise as well, just in case it was those stupid mites because then both would need treatment.
Yahoo! I was wrong! The scabs they believe are a bacterial infection because of chubby Sofie’s little rolls of skin that stay wet from the heat and the swimming. (The truth is she is not over weight, she is just built that way. Well, maybe a little tubby?) Thank Goodness!!! Now I need to wash her well 2X a day and put on this topical spray to kill the bacteria.
Little nusance things that are killing me with Vet bills. But I am thankful for the animal doctors, because they really do know their stuff. Happy Dance!

All my best wishes to Sofie – hope the bacterias will run away soon. To have a good vet deserves a dance … or two :o)

Kind of like getting a loan at the bank. When you need a loan because you don’t have the money, they don’t want to lend to you, but when you have lots of money and a big job they push their loans on you. Hope that is the end of your vet trips for a while.

Very true. I am a glutton for punishment cause I’m taking Noel in for her much overdue annual Monday. What the heck, there are still checks in the checkbook.

Nothing better than a great vet who you know and trust – glad it was just a minor issue.
