2.5.12 6:16: We love rawhide, is that OK?

05 Feb

Lulu & Bone

I have been told that beef rawhide is not good for dogs. But they love it! Also,I have not found anything that keeps them as entertained and happy as a nice new rawhide bone.  I try to limit the size and the consumption of them to once a week so that it does not build up in their stomachs (or whatever that is about).  I also try to find bones that are ‘Made in USA,’ because I heard they are better than China or Mexico beef hide, but they are not easy to find around here. I admit that I get the best I can when I can but it is not always perfect. For some reason, my dogs don’t really like old rawhide.  It needs to be fresh out of the package.  The old stuff (the ends or the chunks I take away for another day) does not seem to hold the same intense enjoyment.  Basically, the don’t even take it from me when offered (Pooh, give us something good!)

Bone & Sofie

Let me ask your advice:

  • Should dogs have beef raw hide bones?
  • If so, how often?  Does it matter?
  • Can it really hurt them inside?
  • What’s a good alternative that you have found?

I love my dogs and would never ever ever want to hurt them, sometimes I just feel dumb when it comes to food choices and toys.  Just another dogdaz morning at the zoo. ❤

All my dogs loved rawhide. My only dog now is short on teeth, so I buy the small, thin strips. I never thought it hurt them, but I will definitely ask my vet. I do know people recommend kong toys, but none of my dogs liked those.

Thanks for the comment, MaryNell. I have Kongs too and I fill them with peanutbutter or cookies, but that does not last long around here. – DogDaz

The Muffin Man & Miss Kitty like dog cookies a lot, Noel not so much, but they never said anything about rawhide. Not sure Lulu and Sofie would let them taste it – or come anywhere near. – LOL – DogDaz

I will devour a large rawhide bone in a short time – and then I don’t feel so good. For some reason my person won’t give them to me very often.

The problem is that some companies soak their rawhides in chemicals that can be toxic to the dogs in large quantities. I believe that the ones made in USA are the safest.

My dogs are always in a hurry to finish the rawhides so they don’t always chew them. They unroll them and then try to swallow them. My dogs do better with bully sticks because they don’t unroll and they don’t choke on them.

My dogs also love to chew on dirty socks, napkins and toilet paper roles.

Sandy – Thanks for stopping by. I have tried bully sticks (which seem really expensive) and Louise eats it in a minute. Maybe I am getting the wrong kind. I absolutely understand the dirty sock, napkins, and toilet paper rolls – same in our house. Sofie tends toward cotton balls too, anytime she passes C’s room. – DogDaz

Our Golden ate rawhides all of the time. We don’t give the Chessies rawhides. They are extreme chewers and it would not be a good thing. We really only give black rubber kong bones. They seem to like them well enough.
