6.26.12 The Walking Bond

Walks are a really important thing at our house. Not only because they provide much needed exercise for me and the dogs, but because of the solace and peace they provide us. My daily dog walks give me an opportunity to focus just on them, as well as be alone with my thoughts. I work a very hectic schedule, so my time with the dogs is sacred. I work 10 to 12 hours or more almost every week day and many weekends. This does not leave a lot of time for me to be with the animals or my other humans. I make sure to carve the 1 mile dog walk every morning out of my schedule. This is how we all stay in balance. When I don’t do that the dogs and I both go crazy. Rain or shine. Many days Mojo and his humans joins us for our walk, those days are a little more social than reflective, but that is nice too. The walking bond is very special between me and the girls. Louise is the kind of dog that really needs her walk daily. She likes to run around in the yard, but she looks forward to the walk with me and saves her ‘personal business’ for that endeavor. When I am not around, it is really hard for her. Sofie just comes along for the ride. She enjoys the sniffing and exploring, but I am not sure she would miss it that much if she did not have it for a while. Taking time to reflect, smell the flowers, and commune with my animals, keeps me whole. Do you have a special routine with your fuzzy?

Walks are super-important to Taylor as well! But, according to her schedule, they HAVE to be in the early afternoon, sometime between 12pm-2pm. If not, she seems out-of-sorts. 😉

Tucker and I love our hikes as well, at least 3 times a week. These truly are the best moments…

Walks are the best, it gives you time to sniff the sniffs and smell the smells! Thank you for another lovely post!

D-d-did you say rain?? I only run out, take care of business and run back in when it rains. I am afraid of rain. Mom bought me a raincoat, but I’m also afraid of the raincoat!!
Love and licks,

You are so right, walking Doggy has proven not only to be good for him but really good for me. I’ve always taken time to run every morning but often found myself thinkin on what I had to do at work and many other things, once Doggy arrived and I started taking him for a run with me I relax and enjoy it more, sure thing I have to keep an eye on him but that’s far from being stressing. Last week I couldn’t take him for long walks (we usually go for 5-6 miles) by Friday he wa a different dog, wouldn’t listen to me, he was going crazy and consequently me too. Walk your dog if you don’t wanna go crazy lol

A tired dog is a well behaved dog. Same for children

My dog also waits for her walk to handle business. Nearly explodes if we miss one

Hi!
We have daily romps in the yard with the collies with Lad’s ball being thrown, the toys being played with, running around and lots of playing. We used to have daily walks with those who like to walk until Trevor grew too feeble to go…… he went for every walk we went on while here, except for one… the one we took after he was too feeble… the look on his face was too much so we ptu them on hold….. we will soon begin them again now that he is gone… We have found the same here that a tired collie is a happy collie! 🙂

When Sophie was still with us (my Gravatar image), her internal clock was set to 9 p.m. Didn’t matter what we were doing, that was *her* time for the nightly walk, rain or shine. She loved her walks more than just about anything else.

They are such creatures of habit. It is a good lesson I think.
