The only one that wants to walk these days is Louise. We go out in the early morning when it is ‘cooler’ (78 degrees by 7 AM). She is one of those dogs that must be walked so I watch the temperature and I make sure to walk before it hits 80. She is loving this alone time with me.
Sofie refuses to go outside: thinking that there are fireworks or thunder or it’s too hot. And when I say refuses, imagine a donkey sitting on its behind refusing to move.

I am not stubborn. I just want to do things my way!
Charles, well he doesn’t like to get up before noon, so the idea of walking to him in the morning is just ridiculous.

It is way to early to get up. Come back later.

June was a good month for flowers and nice walks with Mom.

Louise, here. It is getting hot and humid outside. Can’t we just sit in the grass instead of walking on the hot pavement? Why does Mom not understand that dogs are not meant to be outside on days like this! Can we move somewhere that the weather is always nice, like California? We heard that you never have to cancel anything in California because the weather is always beautiful. But then again, we also heard the ground shakes sometimes and there are drought and fires and mudslides. I guess a few humid weeks in the Mid-Atlantic may not be so bad after all.
Stay cool, Peeps!
Remind your humans that if the street is too hot for their hand, it is too hot for your paws.

Storm season brings with it many nights of stressed-out dogs and no sleep for me. I am trying a new thing by creating a tent that Louise and Sofie can hide under or just throwing a blanket over Sofie. Louise will stay under a lean-to as long as I am with her, but Sofie is just too freaked to deal with it. The blanket over her, nose exposed, while I cuddle her tight seems to soothe a little, but not much works. The thunder vest has been worthless for many years. I tried Xanax but the storms either come earlier or later than expected, so dosing is hard. It doesn’t stop them from getting upset, but they do seem to fall asleep earlier.
Sofie has decided that she needs to be up on my bed and chew on my pillows to protect me, I guess, from the noise.
Noise is our enemy at the Zoo. I’m glad that most fireworks displays were canceled this year (I hate the noise too). But that won’t stop my neighbors from doing their loud and noisy things from now until August.
Have any of you tried dog headphones to shut out noise?

Mini Cooper is one of those cats that has a need for touch. Charles, the dog, on the other hand, likes to be near humans and other animals but does not like to be on your lap or cuddled too close. That is what makes this picture so interesting. Lately, Mini has started reaching out and laying a paw on him when she can. Is this a sign of her primal need to keep track of a predator? I wanted to know more about a cat’s sense of touch so I did a little research and thought I would share it with you.
Cats have whiskers on their upper lip, on their cheeks, and above their eyes, but did you know that they also have whiskers behind their front wrists? These are called carpal hairs. The whiskers on a cat touch like fingers do.
According to Michael Broad in a post in POC (Pictures Of Cats.org), “A cat’s sense of touch includes sensing pressure, warmth, cold and pain. Touch is the first sense that is utilized in the newborn cat as it is the earliest developed sense.”
The cat’s paw has a large number of receptors that respond to pressure and the highest density of those receptors are found ‘between the foot and the toe pads.” (The Cat, Its Behavior, Nutrition & Health published by Blackwell Publishing – IBSN 978-0-8138-0031-9 — page 46 and 47)
But does Mini really have a need for touch? Experts say that cats enjoy and need contact, just like humans do. Most of that they get in the form of petting or grooming. In Mini’s case, however, she seems to have more of a need than other cats. Maybe it comes from the fact that we held her all the time when she was a kitten (and too young to be away from her mother).
The one thing I do know is that Mini loves to have her paw on Charles, or Mom, or any warm body. I want to believe that gives her comfort.

Mr. Charles weaves in and out and under the big dogs. Sometimes I get some very creative macrame knots in the leashes. The last one was really hard to undo. I tried one of those multi-leash handle things and it was terrible. The dogs don’t seem to mind the knot until they get too close to each other. Personally, I try for big dogs on the left and Lil’ on the right, but you know they have their own mind (and sniffing patterns).

Mom was around a lot more than usual this month. She said it was due to something called ‘Corona.’
It sure made it nice for afternoon walks.

Charles here. Mom didn’t realize when she bought this toy for me that it looked like something that is deadly and scary. People told her to return it, but she wanted to teach me how to play with a food ball and it seemed like a good toy to do it with. Louise and Sofie love their food toys, but I don’t get what I am supposed to do.
By George, I think this corona looking toy has helped me figure out the game.
It is not so scary after all.
