Mini just loves Charles. I am not sure that it is reciprocal. Charles loves two beings in this world, well maybe three. He loves his human, V, he loves me, maybe because I am the feeder, the walker, the one that handles any booboos or scary things, and he loves Sofie, the dog (who mostly hates his guts).
I think Charles is the first, One-Person dog, that I have ever had. We got him because V wanted a little dog, more like a dog cat, for some strange reason. It is really weird when you understand that V doesn’t even really like dogs (which is crazy when you are married to an animal-obsessed person like me). I have never considered a very small breed, I tend to go for the bigger dogs, and I never really thought about dogs that are attached to only one human.
Charles is a Pomeranian Chihuahua mix (as far as we can tell – no DNA test ever done). These breeds tend to show extreme loyalty toward and preference for only one person above all others. They will try to rule the household if that person lets them (which is definitely a problem here at the zoo). Charlie is extremely strong-minded and wants to rule the couch, especially if there is food anywhere around, which has caused several fur-raising situations.
Enter, fearless Mini Cooper. She just wants to be friends with everyone. She really likes Charles and wants to be near him. We have tried to arrange the couch pillows so they can be on different levels. They all want a lap, which is impossible. He may roll his eyes, but she will never stop trying to be near him. As you can see in this group of pictures, Mini is holding her ground (or lap as it may be). Ultimately, however, she will leave and he will get his way. Ah, the life of a small tyrant at the DogDaz Zoo.

We had delayed our Christmas holiday celebration until last weekend because Peanut had COVID. She is doing OK now. The dogs finally got to play with their presents. Louise loves squeaky toys and she got a Lambchop stuffy. But she was not able to bite down on it because of the tumor*. She was frustrated. I did not realize that this would happen.

Sofie decided, heck with that, if this thing is going to upset Louise, I am going to eat its face off! Sometimes you just have to destroy a stuffy for your sister.
*Louise has Canine Acanthomatos Ambleoblastoma. If you want to learn more you can find info in our CAA FaceBook Group which tells all about it and follows Louise’s story.

Tuesday, December 21 is the Winter Solstice if you are in the Northern Hemisphere and the reverse in the Southern Hemisphere. On the Winter Solstice, we observe a Germanic holiday that pre-dates the Christmas holiday by thousands of years – YULE. Yule celebrates the wheel of the year with bonfires, decorations of holly, mistletoe, and boughs of evergreen trees (sound like Christmas?). There are also feasts and gift-giving. This is a celebration of the rebirth of the sun and the light that it brings to the Earth (remember from here on it starts to get lighter every day until Summer Solstice in the north).
It is interesting to look at the similarities between Yule and the Christmas traditions:
- The midwinter feast lasts for 12 days
- Vikings decorated evergreen trees with gifts
- Mistletoe was believed to have healing powers (kiss kiss)
- In the Norse tradition, Old Man Winter visited homes to join the festivities. The Viking god, Odin, was described as a wanderer with a long white beard. He is considered the first Father Christmas.
- Viking children left their shoes out by the hearth on the eve of the winter solstice with sugar and hay for Odin’s 8-legged horse, Sleipnir.
Whatever you celebrate – have a wonderful time doing it!

Sofie here. It’s fall in Maryland. The Cave Crickets, also known as Spider Crickets or ‘Sprickets,’ are starting to invade the garage, and occasionally the house. The cats love to torture them. We find lots of parts and pieces. V and the kids are afraid of them so they put a little cup over them and then call Mom to remove them to the greater outdoors. Sometimes, they even put a sticky note on the cup that says ‘BUG!’
As you can see, I am not in the least bit bothered by these jumpy funny antennaed buggy things. Lately, it seems like someone is bringing them upstairs to the kitchen because Noel seems to be spending a lot of time staring under the stove.
Oh my, Noel, sprickets for supper.

Mom had the carpet cleaned. Oh my what a disruption that was! She had to pick up all our toys and the beds. And the carpet was moist for a few days so she didn’t want to put the beds back. Put Nine was not happy about that so he laid down where the dog bed usually is. That confused Louise. She was not sure what to do. So Mom laid a sheet on the floor and she liked that. But then Mom put the big bed back and Nine took it until Sofie chased him away. Finally, the beds are back and life is back to normal. If you call a cat sleeping in the dog bed normal, well it is around here.

I caught another moment of mirroring from these two. I actually think it is Charles mirroring Sofie. The act of mirroring another’s position “is a sign of comfort, trust, and rapport.” I think it is the way that Charles shows Sofie that he is in sync with her. I don’t notice Charles doing it with Louise or the cats, but I do notice Sofie and Louise with each other and them with the cats.
I have often talked about mirroring, even between the cats and dogs. It happens way to often for it to be random. What do you think?
