11.14.12 There’s Nothing Like A Warm Pile Of Laundry

Making the bed, especially after you have just taken blankets our of the dryer, is just a losing battle at the zoo. You see, there is always one cat, if not 4 or 5, that find a nice pile of clean and warm laundry something irresistible.  And a sheet, being tossed across a long expanse of mattress, is just an invitation to jump under it.  I guess I should have never dumped the pile of blankets onto the bed to fold.  What was I thinking?  Maybe if I dropped the pile in some other spot, they would have gone to wherever the pile was, and I could have made the bed.  But who really needs a bed with nice clean sheets and blankets anyway, when you can provide hours of happiness to your pets? I guess I will make the bed later, Noel.  Enjoy your warm fort.

Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤

11.9.12 Nine the SuperCat

SuperCat, Nine here.  I can leap from tall cabinets in a single bound.  I can jump higher than any cat ever did before.  I like to tight-robe-walk along the shower curtain rod and then fly through the air to land on the sink.  I am amazing.  I do not understand why the humans and all the other animals in the zoo are always yelling at me.  Someone even scratched me on the nose while I wasn’t looking.  I will show them.  I will be king of this house even if they keep spraying me with that water thing and throwing shoes at me.  Mommy keeps telling me to stop beating up on poor old Muffin and anxious Miss Kitty, but I won’t.  I will back them into every corner I can to show them who is boss.  But I don’t understand why Sofie Bear has to come and nip at me to try and protect them, she isn’t even a cat.  I thought she would be on my side.  Yesterday even the big black non-cat, Louise, took a nip at me after a big fight in the living room, she usually never gets involved.  I have noticed that the boss cat, Noel, now stays real close to Muffin so that I can not get to him.  I will find a way.  I will use my magic powers of cuteness and make them all understand that I can not help being an adolescent boy cat with a lot to prove in a zoo of animals.  The humans put this silly smelly purple color on me that is suppose to calm me down, but I’ll show them.  Nothing is going to slow me down from my march to be SuperCat of the zoo.  Mommy said something about sending me to a ‘farm’ soon if I don’t clean up my act.  What does that mean?

11.7.12 Prepare Your Other Family Members – Your Pets

Please don’t wait until you have to evacuate because of some terrible weather, fire, or other event, to be family and pet prepared.  DogDaz recommends you get ready now, so that you don’t have to think later.  Here are some tips to help you get set for the day that hopefully never comes.  Stay safe, warm, and happy.

Tips from Anne Arundel County Animal Control

Prepare Your Other Family Members – Your Pets, Now!

PREPARE!
Create a “Pet Emergency Kit” complete with:

  • At least three days of food, water, and any medications that your pet may need
  • Vet/vaccination records, etc.
  • Collars/ID’s, Harnesses, and/or leashes
  • Pictures of you and other family members with your pet(s)
  • Sanitation kit: pet litter, litter box, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach
  • First Aid Kit: talk to your vet or contact Animal Control about what is most appropriate for your pet(s) emergency needs e.g. cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea and tick prevention, latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol, and saline solution
  • Have a carrier or crate ready that your pet has been adapted to for safe transportation purposes. The carrier should be large enough to allow your pet to stand, turn around and lie down
  • Consider microchipping your animal

KNOW WHAT TO DO!

Develop and implement your family’s emergency plan, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND!

  • If you have enough notice, prepare an alternate home for your pet (family, friends, or local kennel) and get your pet there in advance (List of Emergency Boarding Facilities) Space and temporary cages may be limited, so if you have to respond to a shelter with your pet, make sure it is in a carrier (plan in advance and purchase one now)
  • Pay attention to news briefs, county updates, and check the county website for up to the minute status of shelters in your area
  • Know which local hotels/motels will take pets, or which animal boarding facilities take pets during emergencies (List of current Pet Friendly Hotels/Motels in your area and in surrounding jurisdictions)

For more information obtain a copy of the Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies Makes Sense Icon: PDF brochure offered by the Department of Homeland Security.

WHAT ANIMAL CONTROL CAN DO FOR YOU IN EMERGENCIES

  • Depending on available space, Animal Control will seek to make all shelters “pet friendly”
  • Provide pick-up and transportation of pets for the elderly and disabled
  • Provide transportation and temporary care, shelter, food and water at the shelter, if space is available
  • Provide transportation and temporary care, shelter, food and water at the Animal Control Facility
  • Animal Control is working with local veterinarians, kennels, and rescues to establish a network of volunteers to assist with the proper transportation, care and shelter of your pets during disasters.

11.4.12 How You Can Help Pets Effected By Storm Sandy

You can help the pets effected by Storm Sandy.  When shelters are without power the job is so much harder.

RumpyDog posted a great one on Helping Animals Affected by Sandy.  Thank you Rumpy for being so thoughtful.  Please help as you can.  This is going to be a hard winter for an already stressed animal population at the shelters.

Also, here are some good links from Petfinders Blog

Shelters and adoption groups damaged by Hurricane Sandy or assisting their communities in recovering won’t be taking time off this weekend. There is a lot of clean-up to be done, often in areas that still don’t have power.

Mochi is bundled up to stay warm while Animal Haven is without power!

Please take some time to review our posts on Petfinder animal welfare organizations who need help, and reach out to them this weekend if you can.  Here are our past posts from Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with additional shelters checking in below.

New York:

  • Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C)’s Manhattan and Brooklyn Care Centers are now open for adoptions, return-to-owners, and in-takes on a limited basis.  They ask that anyone intending on surrendering a pet to call Pets for Life at  (917) 468-2938 .  Updates are available via their Facebook page
  •  Animal Haven is on day five without power. They have posted a great video of their experience caring for their animals here on YouTube. You can follow their progress and find a link to donate via their Facebook page. They are also accepting donations outside the front gate at 251 Centre Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They need linens, towels, flashlights, lanterns, batteries for flashlights, paper towels, bleach and rubber gloves.

New Jersey:

  • Cape May Co. Animal Shelter (CMCAS)  Staff remained at the shelter throughout the storm. Luckily they were not flooded and did not lose power, however they need to find homes for cats, so consider adopting a hurricane kitty of your very own! They are also on Facebook
  • The Humane Society of Atlantic County  was not as lucky and experienced serious flooding. They report that “much of the cleaning is done and we are rebuilding some of the counters that were destroyed. We have power, heat, water for washing (not drinking though) and lots of friends. At this point [we] estimate the HSAC had about $100,000 loss in supplies, equipment, and business. We hope to re-open Monday. Financial support and Lowe’s/Home Depot cards are still needed.” You can find this update and more on their Facebook page. Monetary donations can be accepted via their web pagesmall brown rabbitWe hope Blair finds a home now that Sandy has passed.
  • The Humane Society of Ocean City  suffered minor damage from Hurricane Sandy. The structure is sound and they plan to open today, November 2nd at 11 a.m. All of the animals are safe. They are asking for donations of laundry soap, bleach, canned cat foot, 33 gallon trash bags, and towels, as these were the most used items during the storm. They would appreciate monetary donations as well. Updates are available via Facebook.

Wednesday’s Black Cat

getoutoftherecat: get out of there cat. you are not a plant. you do not blossom beautifully in the sun.

getoutoftherecat:

Black cats and dogs are mistreated a lot on Halloween (Oct 31).  Please keep your black cat inside tonight and make sure you know where she/he is. Humans are stupid and they are really stupid when they are in costumes for some reason.  Protect your black animals from mistreatment.  A black cat that crosses your path means…. it is only trying to get somewhere.  It is not a curse.  Keep them safe.
