5.31.12 Thank You to Misaki, Bella & Didi

It is so exciting to receive Blog awards.  It makes me realize that people really are reading the ramblings that I spend hours writing.  It is kind of funny but I seem to get awards in clumps: no awards for awhile and then a few at the same time.   I want to say thank you to all my readers and my commenters.  I feel like I have made some new ‘real’ friends these last few months, though I only know you through your blogs and your pictures.  In a weird way, many of us out here in Blogland show a very personal side of who we are on our blogs, and that vulnerability attracts others who also  share themselves.  I thank you all for a very enjoyable 6 months doing the DogDaz blog and look forward to many more months/years together.

The first award, the Sunshine Award, came from themisadaventuresofmisaki. Misaki is an Alaskan Malamute puppy. Though I am not sure whether Misaki is a boy or a girl (hard to tell by his blog – sorry), he enjoys eating (especially bonios), having his belly rubbed, chasing pigeons and playing with his humans. I absolutely love Malamutes and always wanted one.  That dream has yet to come true at the zoo, but maybe one day.

These are the instructions for earning the Sunshine award:

  • Link the award to the person who gave it to you – thanks Misaki!
  • Answer the questions that come with it
  • Pass it along to 10 people and let them know they have received it

Here are the questions and my answers:

Favorite number: 27 (V’s birth Day)

Favorite Non-alcoholic drink: Unsweetened Iced Tea

Facebook or Twitter: fb (even with the bad IPO)

My Passion: the animals

Favorite pattern: interesting question… I am a solids person, but none-repeating patterns are my type if anything

Favorite Day of the Week:  Sunday

Favorite Flower: I do love roses, but have really been enjoying honeysuckle this week.

———————————————————-

Misaki also bestowed on us a Liebster Blog Award:  Thank you again oh little, soon to be giant, furry dog! The rules for this award are:

1. Link back to the person who nominated you: themisadaventuresofmisaki.

2. Nominate five (5) bloggers who have less than 200 followers (if you can tell).

3. Let nominees know by leaving a comment on their sites.

4. Post nomination image on this blog.

——————————————————————

Then, it was a wonderful surprise to receive yet a third award.  This time from the wise duet of Bella and Didi, the Standard Poodles, of Paws to Talk.

Bella and Didi are the smartest pair of ‘Dear Abby,’ pet question answers that I have ever met.  They always seem to have some interesting piece of advice for the troubled pooch or lonely kitty.

The Poodles did not say we had to jump through any hoops for this award (Yah!)

————————————————————-

There are so many blogs that I enjoy and when you get a lot of awards at the same time it is really hard to pass them forward, so I have created my own PICK OF THE LITTER Award.  The following bloggers get to pick one of the above awards for their very own, as well as proudly display that you are the DogDaz Pick of the Litter!

Thank you all for wonderful reading – here is the current DOGDAZ PICK OF THE LITTER:

Thank you soooooo much we love getting awards and really appreciate every single one.  Thank you Misaki, Bella and Didi for thinking highly of the zoo.  We like to ready your blogs and someday maybe we will all met in the virtual dog/cat park!

Love you guys!

5.30.12 ShadeDogs

The days are starting to really warm up.  Under ‘Big Tree’ is the best place to be when it gets like that. The dogs really like to run around but when they are done they dig little holes in the dirt/sand and just lie there for a really long time.  That is the beauty of being a house dog.  Louise and Sofie really do not have any chores like farm dogs do, herding and protecting. They aren’t expected to help with anything like seeing-eye dogs or service dogs. They are not trained to save a life or sniff out drugs or contraband. They just have to do a few tricks, laze around, and look cute.  Grabbing shade on a hot afternoon is a wonderful way to do nothing.  Spoiled, my dogs, No Way!

5.29.12 Lulu Asks ‘Why?’

Hi, this is Louise here.  Mommy is busy and she asked me to write something in the blog today so that she could focus on work.  Now you know that is silly since I can not type, but it was a nice thought anyway, Mom.

My question to all you out there in Blogland is WHY?  Why is it that I can’t clean the cat’s litter box? Why do I have to walk on a leash?  Why can’t I eat that stick? And WHY can’t I chase the furry rat things with that bushy tail up the trees?

I would also like to know why I have to endure strangers in my space regularly.  They scare me and I just want them to go away.  I tell them that rather loudly but they do not listen.  Some of Peanut’s friends smell good though, so they are OK after awhile.

Why does pesky Sofie have to come everywhere I go?  Can’t she stay home sometimes and play by herself?  She takes all my toys!!!

Why can’t I eat the grass? I like it even though it makes me ‘give it back’ sometimes.  Why does the vet have that pointy thing whenever I see her?  Why do you keep putting gunk in my ears?

Well, Mom, I hope you got a lot done at work today.  Why do you have to work anyway?

5.28.12 Thank You To Our Military

On this, our American Memorial day, I wanted to honor the Military Working Dogs, and of course all the active service people and veterans that have protected me and my family and my nation for many years.  Especially remembering my Dad who served honorably in the Army during WWII, and took a bullet so that I could be free to be me.  Thank you very much.  You will never be forgotten.

5.27.12 Sofie’s Lesson, by Louise

Sofie: “Mommy makes us pose in all these places and I really do not want to pose, I want to go chase squirrels or balls or something.  But instead she tries to get me to sit nice and look pretty.”

Lulu: “Sofie, now you know that Mommy does this because she thinks we are both very beautiful, especially me.  So she is trying to show us off to the blog people.”

Sofie: “Blog – smog!  She does this just because she wants to stop me from running around and digging holes everywhere.”

Lulu: “My dear little Sofie, how much you do not understand about humans.  Didn’t you get a nice special yummy treat for sitting nicely?”

Sofie: “Yeah, and your point is….?”

Lulu: “If you do it again, you will get more treats like that.”

Sofie: “Really? You’re so smart, Louise.  I guess that is why your my big sister.”

5.25.12 The Duck and the Green Pool

We opened the pool last weekend, and for those of you who do not know swimming pools, it usually opens a nice algae green color.  Some years the water that sits in the pool all winter has even been a lovely shade of black. It takes me about a week to clear it and get it to nice swimming blue. Since it is spring in the Mid-Atlantic, the ducks have come to roost and are very happy that I have provided them a lovely swimming hole.  I was not terribly happy to see Mr. Duck getting ready for a swim this morning.  I let the dogs out, but they can not get to the pool area, so all they did was bark. Mr. Duck could not have cared less, he stood there by the pool for a really long time anyway with the dogs barking safely outside the pool gate. I expect Mrs. Duck will be back with him soon; when he finds her.  There is a lot of ‘that’ going on under my bushes right now; ducks finding their spring mates.  Every year they come back and party in the yard.  Then they have their ducklings under my bushes and waddle them down the road to the river.  The cycle continues. That makes me so happy.  But, I do not like the ducks in the pool or them leaving ‘presents’ on the edge.

5.24.12 SO-fie Good

I am amazed at Sofie Bear these days,  I am so happy with her, she is like a different dog then the one that came to live with us 1-1/2 years ago.  Sofie is at the point now that we can do a total walk around the neighborhood without the leash.  She comes when called and rarely gives me any bad behavior,   I must say that if I go for to many days without reminding her whose boss (me!) she can slide a little, but I would expect that.  If someone told me I would be this big a fan of the e-collar method, I would have told them they were crazy, but the collar, along with 4 weeks of training (for me mostly), is what really really did the trick.  I notice many people with e-collars on their dogs, but the collars are to loose or not positioned correctly.  I also think that a lot of people buy them but don’t really know how to use them to get the kind of behavior modification that they are looking for.  I hardly ever had to correct Sofie with the collar, which surprised me.

Watch out Lulu Belle, you’re next!  Mommy likes the idea of 2 off-leash dogs.

I’ve have never reblogged on WordPress before, but I was so moved by Stitch’s plight that I have to let you all know.

Wanderlust Photography's avatarTwo Little Pigs

From Stitch’s Adoptive Family’s Website::

Three years ago, we adopted a sweet little dog named Stitch. The woman who owned him told us his sad story. Stitch had been passed around to several people in his first year of life – a group of young kids who were part of the Hollywood club scene. The woman’s teenage daughter had ended up with Stitch, but the girl was wild and out of control, partying, disappearing for weeks at a time with her adult boyfriend.

Stitch had been locked in the teen’s room for days without sunshine or exercise, having to relieve himself on the carpet. The daughter had taken him to a wild party where he had become so distressed that he jumped through a pane glass window to escape. And eventually, in their care, the dog ended up abandoned in the middle of a highway 10 hours away in…
