Wonderful Wednesday: Noel, the Dog?

Dementia does interesting things to animals. It appears that Noel at almost 17, has decided that she is a dog. Don’t get me wrong, she screams like a cat, constantly and continually, but she is behaving more and more like a dog.

She waits at the top of the stairs with them (Bearnard is hidden next to Jolie). Many times she is there by herself.

She even tried to join in when the dogs were playing with their Snuffle mats (and luckily they just ignored her). The Littles are not in the least bit food aggressive, so Noel being close does not cause a ruckus (thank goodness!)

She has taken over Charles’ spot (our recently deceased PomChi) on the couch and now, I guess she is just running with the pack.

Mini Cooper on the other hand finds the dogs ridiculous!

Wonderful Wednesday: Move It, Dog!

Noel here:

Is there a reason that this new demon dog is in my spot?

Get out you darn dog!

How dare he think he can have the run of the place!

Pretty soon I am going to have to put this youngin’ in his place.

You better Watch out, BEARnard – Queen Noel rules the zoo (now and always).

Wonderful Wednesday: My Hands Are Full

The plan was not to have multiple little dogs on my lap all the time. Bearnard was supposed to be on the couch with V. But now Noel has taken Charles’s spot on the couch, and Mr. “I don’t want to be left out of anything,” is always trying to hog my lap (to Jolie’s dismay).

A CAT ONLY moment.

It really is crazy when Mini Cooper joins in and Noel scratches for attention from the side of the recliner.

This is why I always say you should not have more pets than you have hands. And even though we have 4 hands in this house, they all want my 2 at the same time.

They are definitely, a HAND-FULL.

Thankful Thursday: A New Stylist in Town

I was absolutely amazed when Noel came up on the couch and started to lick Jolie’s ears. And Jolie just let her. I am really thankful for a wonderful zoo of animals. Jolie pretty much is the most chill dog we have ever had. And, Noel is doing great for 16-1/2. She rules the roost, fur sure.

Wonderful Wednesday: Jolie Isn’t Sure About Him

Jolie is a Mama’s girl. After over a year (she came to us in July 2022) of not having to share Mom very much, because Charles wasn’t really a lap guy and the cats don’t count, she is not sure she likes this new dog.

I am guessing that her 6-1/2 years of living in a cage with other dogs made her into the ‘must get every scrap of food I can’ kind of dog. She wants all the food and all the cookies and all my time. She is not food or resource-aggressive at all, just pushy.

Now that Bearnard is here, Jolie is not sure about this whole ‘other’ dog thing, Though she does run and bark with him around the yard and at the door. She also has found that he is very food selective so he drops a lot of the treats he is given, which she quickly swoops in and eats. She does like that about him.

Having to share Mom’s lap is still questionable, but she is working on it. There really is no choice since, Mr. Zoom around the house, jump and spin, Bearnard, doesn’t understand boundaries very well yet. She is teaching him with a growl and a push.

Mom thinks over time (it has only been 3 weeks) they are going to be the bestest of friends. We will keep you posted.

Have a WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY!

Wonderful Wednesday: Welcome, BEARnard

We would like to introduce you to the newest member of the zoo, BEARnard.

Bearnard joined us on September 2. He fits in very well and is a sweet and rambunctious boy. The rescue he came through, WorthyDog.org, was awesome to work with.

So here is what we were told:

  • Bear was turned in at a high-kill shelter in rural South Carolina in June. The people who turned him in with another dog, a puggly-looking thing, said they could not afford them anymore. He had never seen a vet; had not been neutered; had no birthdate or any other information. The shelter said he was terrified.
  • The rescue transported him to Virginia and immediately got him shots and neutered.
  • He was fostered by a nice couple who lived on the Virginia/West Virginia border with a bunch of Chihuahuas and 2 cats.
  • The vet thinks he is about 2 or 3 years old and a Papillon mix,
  • He weighs 15 lbs,

The rescue intake picture. The poor thing is terrified.

It appears that Bear, now BEARnard, was never really inside. He is only just learning that indoors is different especially when it comes to the bathroom.

Now I have 2 knee protectors

He is a velcro dog and does not give Jolie much space between him and me. He wants always to be on me, next to me, near me, see me. (Don’t worry, Jojo is still getting a lot of Mommy cuddles.)

He is supposed to be V’s little dog, to fill the space where Mr. Charles was, but it does not currently appear to be working out that way.

We absolutely love him. He is funny and zoommy and is really putting Jolie (and me) through our paces. Jojo is used to old man Charles (who was 15 when he passed), so the age difference is big in terms of energy. Jolie is 7-1/2 and Bearnard is 2 or something. I think they will be great friends over time.

And you might wonder about the cats: Noel, the 16-1/2-year-old, basically told him the lay of the land the minute he came inside, but Mini Cooper (she’s 9 and usually so brave) is still trying to figure him out. He chases her (of course she runs and slinks), so she hid for the first week and 1/2 in the bedroom behind a rocking chair. Now it appears she is settling down and I actually think she will like him as much as she did Charles.

What a gift our new little man is.  Welcome to your furever home, Bearnard.

Wistful Wednesday: Farewell to Hazel

It is with great sadness that I tell you about the loss of our grandcat, Hazel, on August 28. She was such a sweetheart. K8 adopted Hazel 3 years ago when she was about 4 years old. She loved to sit in the window and play with her brother, Freddie Purrcury. Her favorite thing was to scare her mother half to death by sitting for hours on the ledge at the top of the second-floor stairwell (with no net).

Sadly, cancer seemed to consume her little body very quickly. May her memory be a blessing and may she continue to purr over the rainbow bridge with the rest of the angels from the extended zoo. Purr on sweet girl, you are missed.

Wonderful Wednesday: Stella Turns 12

Miss Stella turns 12 years old today. She lives her solitary life of joy and continues to smile and purr and amuse as long as she is not with any other animals. We do love you, Stella.

Stella has lived in her own suite away from all the other animals since she was 4 (a long time now). She was bullying Noel once Mini Cooper came to live with us. Originally we were going to put Noel in the suite to give her a break from the bully, but the vet suggested that it was Stella who maybe wanted to be alone. And she does. Stella has lunch or dinner with a human and watches a lot of HGTV and the cooking channel. We tried Animal Planet but V thought it was too violent for Stella so, home decorating it is.

Happy Birthday, Big Girl

Thankful Thursday: Remembering Louie

Louis Pierre Andre the 13th of Edgewood Lipton was my family dog growing up. Everyone wanted a different name for him so that is what it ended up being. AKA – Louie.

I was visiting my sister last week and she had all these pictures of him from the ’60s. I think the story was that a friend of my sister’s owned a pizza parlor and they had this French poodle that they did not want. Our dog, Freya had just passed away (she got hit by a car), so these people gave Louie to us. Whether any of that is true (except the losing Freya part which I was there for), I do not know. I was maybe 5 or 6 years old.

My Mom had trained him to sit on his haunches and beg. It was a cute move and he enjoyed being the dancing happy center of attention (even though it does not look that way in this picture).

I am the little one in this picture (7 years old) with my stuffed cat. I think my sister will kill me when she sees that I posted this. Of course, she is holding Louie. He lived a long happy life and passed away while I was in college, so he must have been 16+.

I am thankful for such wonderful memories.

Thankful Thursday: Time Flies

Where has the summer gone? Here it is mid-August, the DOGDAZ of Summer, so they say, and we have hardly gotten anything we wanted to accomplished. Oh well! Maybe that is the way it was supposed to be. I think I will just lie here on Jolie’s new bed and take an afternoon nap. I am 16-1/2 years old you know and need more rest than younger kits. – Noel, the Queen of the DogDaz Zoo
