Wow! It is now 2020. My daughter, Peanut, told me the other day (she is 25), that “we will never see the ‘teens’ again in our lifetime” as we move into the twenties. Now, that is a very profound thought. It made me stop and take a pause on all the things that pass me by with little notice. How an instant, or a year or 50, is just a jumble of moments and pictures burned on the memory of my total recall. I think about all the people and the animals that have graced my time. I am so thankful that I have had this platform to document moments and days, and now years, of my Zoo. Maybe, when I no longer have the capability to recall the images in my mind, this blog will be here to remind me of how wonderful those moments were and are. The primary color of my wardrobe is black. My second color is navy and then dark gray. Are you seeing a pattern here? Well Mr. Nine, who has always liked the hanging clothes closet as a sleeping spot (it is actually two 6-foot closets running along one wall with sliding mirror doors), has taken to pulling stuff down off the hangers and making himself a bed on the shelf. Oh my! Sometimes, at 5 am when I am getting dressed for work, he jumps out at me and we both get scared. Lint rollers don’t even work anymore. Long ago I realized he can slide the doors open on his own and go inside. No keeping him out. I have my black suits and dresses hidden in a closet under the stairs that the cats can’t get into (unless of course, they run in when I am getting dressed and get trapped all day, which has happened). Cat and dog hair is my life.

Dear Noel.
My humans have adopted a small kitten and they want me to share my food, my toys, and even my bed, with the obnoxious little pest. How do I get them to understand that I love their company but this is my space and I like it that way?

Dear Distraught,
Humans just don’t understand us felines very well, do they? In the human world, I guess they don’t care if a stranger comes into their house and takes all their food out of the cabinet and eats it and then sleeps in their nice cozy bed. I wish there was a way you could explain to them that cats are very territorial and suspicious creatures. We need our own spaces. Do you have shelves that you can climb up on, a cat tree, or at least a window perch to get away from the pesty newbie? I know that in my house, we have a community of cats, of which I am the Queen, and sometimes we all like to be together, and many times, we all want to be alone. That is why our humans have catified our house with trees and window seats and gates to keep the dogs away from our play areas.
Best of luck and remember you are the older one so you get to tell the little one what to do and how to do it just like I do! You’ve got this!

Noel, the Christmas cat, is a mess. She seems to always have mudge in her eyes and food all over her face and never is able to get clean. I just love this silly girl.
