DogDaz Zoo: Thankful For YOU

Today we are celebrating “Thanksgiving.”

It is a fun holiday full of food and smells and family.

I am busy making vegan pumpkin pie and marinating the tofurky* and roasting all those wonderful winter root veggies.

Thanksgiving is a time when I look back at the people and things in my life and take stock of that for which I am most thankful.

I am thankful for 11 years of blogging this month, which has allowed me to meet YOU, my readers. I have met your families and your pets. You’ve shown me your life through pictures. You’ve read me your poems, and most of all, you have allowed me to experience your life through your blogs.

Thank you from the bottom of my DogDaz heart. – Lorian

TIPS FOR FEEDING PETS AT THE HOLIDAYS

Many pets can get a little too much food today, as do the people. So, as you are getting ready to sit down to the dinner table, here are some tips from ASPCA experts for a fulfilling Thanksgiving that your pets can enjoy, too.

Talkin’ Turkey
If you decide to feed your pet a little nibble of turkey, make sure it’s boneless and well-cooked. Don’t offer her raw or undercooked turkey, which may contain salmonella bacteria.

Sage Advice
Sage can make your Thanksgiving stuffing taste delish, but it and many other herbs contain essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets if eaten in large quantities. Cats are especially sensitive to the effects of certain essential oils.

No Bread Dough
Don’t spoil your pet’s holiday by giving him raw bread dough. According to ASPCA experts, when raw bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise in his stomach. As it expands, the pet may experience vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating, which could become a life-threatening emergency, requiring surgery.

Don’t Let Them Eat Cake
If you’re baking up Thanksgiving cakes, be sure your pets keep their noses out of the batter, especially if it includes raw eggs—they could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.

Too Much of a Good Thing
A few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a taste of mashed potato or even a lick of pumpkin pie shouldn’t pose a problem. However, don’t allow your pets to overindulge, as they could wind up with a case of stomach upset, diarrhea or even worse—an inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. In fact, it’s best to keep pets on their regular diets during the holidays.

A Feast Fit for a Kong
While the humans are chowing down, give your cat and dog their own little feast. Offer them Nylabones or made-for-pet chew bones. Or stuff their usual dinner—perhaps with a few added tidbits of turkey, vegetables (try sweet potato or green beans) and dribbles of gravy—inside a Kong toy. They’ll be happily occupied for a while, working hard to extract their dinner from the toy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Monday Mischief: Right, Left, Left

One day I will be able to sit down and watch TV without a million paws asking for something. To the right of me was Louise, begging in her cute ‘please Mommy’ way for a cookie. What you don’t see is a moment before she was pawing at my leg relentlessly. I don’t know about you but I have these long black and blue marks down my thighs, and then I remember it was Louise.

To the left of me was Mini Cooper. Wanting my endless attention, all the time these days. Sometimes I notice these little scratches all over my legs and tummy and realize, oh yes, Mini was kneading me.

Then I turn away and it is Charles now on my left, who has rousted Mini because he was jealous and wants to make sure no one gets more attention than him. At least, the little man doesn’t leave any marks.

What kind of mischief did you get into today?

Monday Mischief: October Review

Error
This video doesn’t exist

They say that this was the prettiest leave change in a long time in Maryland, but we did not see it. Maybe this week when it stops raining?

Wonderful Wednesday: Who’s Boss

I usually cover my bed with the horse blanket so that Noel does not shed all over my comforter (making nests of white fur which gets up my nose as I sleep). But she has only been lying on my pillows lately, so I was lazy and decided to only cover the top of the bed. As you can see, Noel wants to show me who the boss is. Meow Out Loud!!

Did August really even happen this year?

Can you find Stella? She looks like Mini Cooper but she is brownish not gray. Let me know in the comments what day you think you see her.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Wonderful Wednesday: Vaccinate Your Pets

Charles here. The other day, Mom took me to the Pet Doctor to get my yearly checkup and vaccinations. I was scared at first but it really didn’t hurt and there are so many good reasons why I need to have vaccines. Mom is very conservative when it comes to putting stuff in our system, so she does a thing called a TITER, if possible, to see if I still have immunity from the last shot. If so, we wait. There are a lot of things that can protect me from getting horrible diseases. I get 4 core vaccines: distemper, infectious hepatitis, parvovirus, and rabies.

  • Vaccinations protect me from getting diseases like rabies, which I can get from other animals.
  • Vaccines protect me from airborne viruses like distemper, parvovirus, coronavirus (yes we get a Corona too), infectious canine hepatitis, bordetella, parainfluenza.
  • There are also vaccines for things like Lyme disease (which I had when Mom first rescued me), which comes from ticks, and leptospirosis, from wild animals.

To determine what vaccines I need, Mom and the Vet, base it on 3 things:

  • My Age – puppies need a lot of stuff to help their bodies build up resistance to certain bugs, but adults, like me, only need an occasional booster shot.
  • Where we live – our luck is that the mid-Atlantic is rampant with ticks. This could mean Lyme disease and a whole host of other tick-borne diseases.
  • Lifestyle: I am never boarded, I don’t go to day-care or the dog park, so my exposure to things like ‘kennel cough (bordetella), is low.

Don’t forget the Cats who should get some core vaccines too. They are different than us dogs. The need at a minimum: Feline herpesvirus-1/feline viral rhinotracheitis (Which Noel has. When Mom rescued her she was seriously ill), Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. If they go outside, they need more things like Rabies and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).

Baby Noel rescued Dec 2007

Many Vets and Clinics offer low-cost, sometimes even free, vaccinations.

Take care of me and I will live a long, healthy, life.
