Monday Mischief: Trio @ the Vet

It was one of those days. I had planned to take Charles to the vet to get his annual shots (his birthday was last week and that is when they are due). Then I decided to take Louise too (because the vet is 30 miles away and I wanted to not have to make another trip). Louise needed her teeth looked at and this thing growing on her head.
As fate had it, the day before the visit, Sofie went lame in her front right leg. OK, now I was taking 3 dogs to the vet. When you have 1 anxious dog and 1 fearful dog and 1 small dog it can become a complicated trip. They all have different needs around the adventure.

Being the zookeeper of course, I had a plan.

1. Stay cool. It is just too hard to take all 3 into the office at the same time so someone needs to stay in the car. That wouldn’t be a problem if the temperature was moderate but, it was too hot out to leave anyone in the car (96 degrees). I brought my extra key so that I could lock the car while it was running. I turned the air conditioning on high, put on some classical music and locked Sofie in the car with all the comforts of the world. I watched the car from inside the waiting room. It was funny to see people’s faces when they looked in and heard the classical music and a happy dog. I worried the whole time though that someone might break the window if they thought she was locked in a hot car, so maybe next time I’ll make a sign.

2. Empty the waiting room. When I take Louise to the vet, I always need to make sure that there are no other dogs in the waiting room before I bring her in. She can get aggressive with strange dogs and people, especially if she is scared. Sometimes I bring her in and out the back door of the vet’s office so we avoid everything. (You know me, avoidence is one of my favorite dog management practices.) Luckily, there were only cats in carriers today.

3. Keep Charles safe from Sofie. Sofie is grumpy and Charles is pigheaded. They can get into a big snit, so I never leave them unattended in a stressful situation and I especially wouldn’t leave Charles in the car with Sofie because I don’t trust that she won’t attack him which would be goodbye little boy. Keeping all 15 lbs of Charles safe is a major concern always.

4. Switcharoo. Once Louise and Charles were done inside, it was time to switch dogs and take Sofie in. But Sofie, being Sofie, makes that action not so easy. She knows where she is and refuses to get out of the car. I am not lifting 55 lbs of anxious dog. A push and a pull and finally I get the stubborn ‘donkey’ to move along without the other 2 dogs running loose.

5. Safe drive home. Somehow Sofie, who is normally in the back seat with Louise, switched spots with Charles, who is usually tethered to the seat belt. I don’t like loose dogs in the car, but in this case, I gave up and let them all just be where they wanted to be.

Monday Mischief: Nap Assistants

Hi, Sofie here. I noticed that Mom decided to lay down and take a nap. Always a good thing to do. And then I noticed that pesky, Charles, laying in my spot on the bed right next to Mom. The nerve of that Mugwump! I needed to do something about that immediately.

So I crawled up from the end of the bed and I got as close to Mom’s head as I could. No one is going to get closer to Mom than me.

Mom put a pillow between me and Charles because she knows that I would bite him if he got to close to her me. Smart Mom because it gave me something to put my head on.

I am the Queen of the bed. And I own the Mommy.

This is very comfortable, I think I will take a snooze too.

Oh, Louise was napping with us too. But she knew that Mom was covered with dog, so she took the guard position on the floor.

Monday Mischief: They’re Home

Charles here.

I think I told you that Louise and Sofie go on outings without me (Boo Hoo). Mom says that the big dogs sometimes need time with their big dog friends, so I stay home. I still miss them when they are gone and I get really excited when they return.

Monday Mischief: Pet Me! No, Pet Me!

There is a lot of jealousy going on in the past year and a half since we rescued Charles. I definitely think it is a little dog thing. He came to us with resource guarding issues and it seems that it is contagious. Now, whenever I am sitting with Louise or Sofie (who were never jealous of my affection for the other), Charles appears and creates a conundrum. He is very demanding of attention. Mild-mannered Louise has had her full of the pipsqueak and has started to get demanding herself. Oh, my! Now no one gets attention. What’s a zookeeper to do?

Monday Mischief: We Know You’re There

When you have a fence, and you have 3 dogs, unavoidably, they will always want to know who or what is on the other side. In this case, at the side fence, it is a new black Labrador puppy named Sadie. Gracie, also a black lab, who used to live over there, passed away a few months ago from old age stuff. Now we have a new smell. Always something to bark at. We don’t really want to meet her. We just want to sniff and bark through the fence.

Monday Mischief: The Lonely Piano Man

As you know, Louise and Sofie go to Sonya’s on Thursdays to run with the big dogs. I stay home and take care of Mom. Though I get a really special treat right after they leave (because Mom loves me best), I miss them when they are gone. I watch for them anxiously at the only window that I can see out of, the one over Mom’s piano. That’s why Mom calls me “The Piano Man.”

It works nicely as a lookout, don’t you think?

Even though Sofie is mean to me when she is home, I miss her when she is gone. Louise, of course, is my idol. She doesn’t cozy up to me as much as the cats do, but I really like to hang out with her.

I saw Louise try and look out the piano window the other day and Mom got really mad at her. I guess that is the benefit of being 15 lbs instead of 65.
