3.2.12 The chase is on….

Stella

There has been quite a lot of running around since the kittens have come out of their room.  Stella and Nine have both discovered that dogs are fun to play with, though Stella is still a little worried about Sofie charging her down the hall.  It is fun to see both dogs sniffing the kitties gently.  Miss Kitty actually likes the dogs better than she likes the other cats, so she is always hanging around Sofie.

Kitty & Sofie on the den couch

Sofie does do this little nippy thing with the kitties that worries me a little, but I figure that all my cats have very sharp claws and the dog will learn if it gets out of line.  It is not that she is aggressive, it just seems like she wants to play with them like they were dogs.  And speaking of dog play, my crazies run around so much that they end up slipping and tumbling all over the deck ever since I had it stained last year with this new kind of weatherproofing.

I love to watch the dogs run around and chase and chase. One gets a toy and then the other has to have it, and the chase is on.

3.1.12 Tag… you’re it!

Wow – we are playing tag today thanks to Chuck and his wonderful Collies of the Meadow.  I have never been tagged before so this will be fun.  Thanks Chuck and Collies for including me in the game.

I will let Sofie Bear answer for the zoo on this one:

1.Describe yourselves in 7 words: Mom says that I am stubborn but also loving, silly, active, barky, whiney, and mostly Rolly Polly

Sofie always sticker her nose in everything

2. What Keeps You Up At Night?  Knowing that the cats get to roam around the house but Lulu and I have to sleep in our beds with the doors closed all night.

3. Who Would You Like To Be?  me and only me (well maybe Bassa the great Caucasian Shepard sometimes)

4. What Are You Wearing Right Now? My name collar with Mom’s cell phone number because she worries that I will dig under the fence and she wants someone to bring me home if I get lost (but they won’t be able to catch me so why wear anything).

5. What Scares You?  Plastic bags and mylar balloons, especially when the wind blows them against the fence and I can’t figure out what they are.

6. The Best And Worst Of Blogging:  Best Blogging: when Mommy blogs about me and Lulu.  Worst Blogging: when she blogs about those darn cats!

7. The Last Website I Visited?  Collies of the Meadow to thank them for making us do all this silly tag work (just kidding about the silly part)

8. What Is The One Thing I Would Change About Myself?  I want to be a towering giant not this little scrappy dog, so I act like one because Mom says, “Be the change you want.”

9.  Slankets?  If it is food, I will eat it; if it is something to wear, I will lie on it.

10.  Tell Us Something About The Dogs That Tagged You:  I have been following Collies of the Meadow for almost the whole 90 days that I have been blogging (is it really only 3 months?).  Not only have a learned a tremendous amount about the incredible Collie breed and bloodlines, but I have had a view into the life of their dad, Chuck, and his family of dogs.  Trevor, one of the seniors, is ailing and we are all praying that he finds his way with little pain.  I really enjoy checking in with them when they post and seeing what is happening in their meadow.

8 Bloggers To Tag–  I have tagged the following blogs.  If you have been tagged before, you can just post a link in the comments so we can check out your tag answers.

2.28.12 It’s for the birds!

Look close in the hole of the nesting box.

Yesterday’s post about the Big Tree made me start to think about spring, which appears to be about a month early here in the Mid-Atlantic.  I am happy because walking the dogs is easier, and all my feathered friends start to come back in the yard in full color.  We sit for hours watching them come to the feeders and the watering spots. I am amazed that, except when the dogs first come racing out of the house to catch squirrels, the birds just stay where they are and do not mind them.  We have some wonderful creatures that bless us every day,  We get humming birds, and humming bees, butterflies, moths, and skippers.

Can’t wait until the real spring comes.  Thanks to K8 once again for the great pics from last year.  Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤

2.27.12 Big Tree: Background to my life

Lulu under Big Tree

The dominating feature on one side of our back yard is a big maple tree.  I call it ‘Big Tree.’  Last year we lost a companion big maple tree on the side yard (lightening hit and and then bugs ate it from the inside).  It used to mingle it’s leaves with Big Tree.  Now we only have the canopy of ‘Big Tree’ to shelter that area in summer.  And of course, we have the pines, but, those are different.

Sofie under Big tree

The Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy,  Northern Flicker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Cooper’s Hawk and all the yard birds love that tree.  We keep the suet there (you can see in the picture) especially for the peckers. The feeders are in more protected areas because of the osprey and hawks.  Every dog likes to lie and play around Big Tree. So did the children.  We had a cable put in it several years ago to keep it from falling into the house.  I did not realize, until I went to look for pictures, how much Big Tree has been the background for our lives in this house. We actually bought this house because of the way that tree made us think we were in a tree house from the living room window. The kid’s swing-set/tree house used to live under it.  There used to be grass in that area, where now there is only sand.  The gardens have changed and paths have worn, but Big Tree still is there for us.

My step daughter, K8, is an amazing photographer, and I thank her for the close up shots of the hawk, spider, and yard birds.  We are blessed with this amazing gathering of birds all year long.  We have our common friends: Carolina Chickadees, American Goldfinch, House Finch, Carolina Wrens, Song Sparrow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Dark-eyed Junco, European Starling, Brown-headed Cowbird, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Blue Jay, Mourning Dove, American Crow & Raven, and Northern Cardinal. And our occasional: Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Bluebird, Barred Owl.  We also have the ducks that lie under the tree: Teal, Mallard, American Black Duck, American Wigeon.

The water birds tend to visit but don’t stay long (except the ducks).  The Osprey live less than a 1000 feet away but don’t seem to land on the tree, they circle and watch the action.

Locals in Big Tree

Trees are an amazing part of the landscape and really form the background to our lives. If you stay in one place for a certain amount of time or visit the same spot year after year, you get to know the trees.  Over the years we have lost many trees to their age, and the bugs, and the weather.  We had this incredible Tortured Willow that was half dead when we moved in and we nursed that beauty for several years before I was willing to let her go.  When you lose a tree, so much changes.  The garden pattern.  The landscape flow.  The environment changes all around.  About 5 years ago, the people across the street took out over 40 large pines so they could build a second driveway and a shed (that I now have to look out my office window every day at, instead of the wonderful natural forest I loved).  All the squirrels and rabbits, had to find other homes (of course in my yard).  I wish people would stop cutting and start caring more what happens when they get rid of all the natural cover just so they could park an extra car.  Hey, I just thought about the fact that maybe that is why the wind and run off pattern has eroded my property around Big Tree a lot more in the last few years.  I think I am going to call a tree expert to make sure the Big Tree is OK.  I want it to be here for a really long time if possible because it is the background to my life.

2.26.12 Rain, Rain, Go Away!

My toy! It's in the rain!

It was raining.  Not something that happened very often this winter in the Mid-Atlantic.

Lulu our toys are getting wet!

Sofie was very distressed that her toys were getting wet.

Lu get Mommy & tell her we need our toys!

Lulu did not really want to go out in the wet stuff but Sofie just had to get the toys.

I don't like being wet Mommy, let me back in!!!!

Ok, so I let them out to go get the toys, but Sofie was not very happy about that idea either.  Louise is no fool, she ran out and ran right back in (my princess).  She was not going to play with Sofie in the rain.  Lulu likes it in the house with all the warm and dry toys.  So Sofie Bear decided that maybe getting wet was not as much fun as it looked and begged to come back in for the dry toys.  You have to love the way dogs are so in the moment. So the lesson they taught me today – it may be fun to dance in the ran, so try it, maybe you will like it, maybe you will want to come inside where it is dry.

Just another DogDaz morning at our house ❤

2.25.12 We are free to invent our lives; dogs, not so much…

Miss Constance Kitty taking a nap

{Warning,,, for some reason I am feeling very philosophical today and not waxing very doggy…} If you really could come back as anything you wanted, if reincarnation was something that really happens, what would you be? I think that I would want to be an old person’s cat. I get to laze around all day with my person, get lots of treats, not have a lot of demands put on me, and sleep my requisite 20 out of 24 hours. But, alas, I do not know if that is possible. I realized long ago that I must invent my life here and now and not wait until the next life. So, I invented a life full of love and laughs and furry things. Even though I have to work to earn money (and usually I work about 12 to 16 hours per day), I am very lucky to have ‘invented’ or, at least ‘positioned,’ a job that allows me to be surrounded by my zoo on most days and work in an environment that is all my own (home). No one ever told me that I was free to invent my life (my parents would have thought this an utterly crazy conversation). Probably like most people, my younger life just sort of happened to me.  I did not realize I was inventing my life for a long time, but then, the things I wanted, really really wanted, the things I prayed for, and lite candles for, started to materialize.

In today’s world there are ‘vision boards’ and ‘life plans,’ and there are even people who get paid to be your ‘life coach.’  Looking back (hind sight is always 20/20) I never had a picture but a feeling about my life. I just wanted to love and to be loved in return. I wanted a family around me and I wanted animals. I wanted meaningful work and to do good deeds. I never really visioned owning material things, that was just icing on the cake.  No matter what your circumstance, I do want you to know that it is never to late to invent your life.  To fill it, even if only for the shortest moment of the day, with your dreams and visions, and you will be surprised, how when you start to put out in the universe those things that you desire, in a positive way, they start to come back to you and your life starts changing toward the vision that you have asked for. (And that is how I ended up with 2 dogs and 5 cats, so make sure you realize what what you inventing (hahahaha!))

One warning about this vision thing:  I once asked the universe for some time off from work because I really was not having fun.  I wasn’t very specific about it.  Soon after putting that out in the universe, I broke my leg and had to take several weeks off.  The clearer you are, the more likely you will get exactly the life you want.  So I should have put out there: “please let me be healthy, on a beach, in the sun, having fun with my dogs and favorite humans by my side,”

I think you make your luck, you invent your life, and you make it happen every day. You have the freedom to invent your life – what are you inventing today?
