I am not sure why but my dogs seem to sleep like bookends a great deal of the time. Do we animals sleep with our back to our best friend because that is safe? This way you know your back is protected and that your best buddy will see things coming from one way and you will see them from the other? I just find it interesting because that is how I sleep as a human. I always turn out with my back to the center of the bed. Otherwise, it feels to vulnerable. I have tried to turn with my back to the outside but something about that just does not feel safe. A Travelodge survey found that 50% of British couples prefer sleeping back-to-back, either not touching (27%) or touching (23%). When I started looking into this for the blog, I found a ton of hits about dogs sleeping on their backs, but I only found one (http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Dog_Sleep) that talked about back-to-back behavior. That blog talked about it being bonding behavior as well as safety. Since I do not sleep with my dogs in the bed, I wonder how people and dogs that do sleep together are positioned. Does your dog have your back?
Just another dogdaz morning at the zoo ❤

Awww..they are so gorgeous! Very interesting fact and thanks for sharing. 🙂 Now I know why Simba loves to lie behind my back and funny thing is, when he does that I feel safe. 🙂
Great post! 🙂
*hugs*

That is neat. I sure do feel well protected with my two mutts, that’s for sure.

Interesting, and something I’ve never thought of really. My dog sleeps on our bed and she tends to lie between us, near to our feet. However, if she is cold, she sleeps behind my head! Figure that one out!

My dogs sleep on the bed with their backs to me. I thought it was because they wanted to crowd me to get more of the bed. Our footboard has scratches because Freckles has dreams and “runs” in her dreams and her nails have scratched the footboard over time. I guess they are just trying to protect me.

Our girl used to love spooning with us in the mornings, but not so much anymore. She loves her kennel and also she and the cat sleep back to back on occasion!

I definitely have Mom’s back when we sleep. And her front if she turns over. My goal is to be pressed against her as hard as possible all night long. I am cuddly!!
Love and cuddles,
