12.22.12 Caturday: Joint Focus

2012-12-15_13-34-38_44

Something is very interesting outside in the back.  I think that the woodpecker is at the suet or maybe the redbirds are at the bath.  You usually don’t find Louise and Nine together but they appear to have a similar focus.  Enjoy your Caturday!

12.21.12 Let The Sky Fall

Mom said that many humans think that today marks the end of the world. Actually, she wishes that today would mark the end of the violent world as we know it and the beginning of a new peaceful one with no more killing of innocents or war or any hate stuff.  But alas,  we have been told that our Mom is a big dreamer.

lu 1st snowFor us, today is the first day of winter, and hopefully that means that white stuff will start falling from the sky soon.  We love white stuff.  It is fun to eat and romp in.  We really do hope the sky falls soon.

Mom’s family came from Northern Europe and there they celebrated a festival at midwinter called Yule.  We like festivals.  From today on in the Northern Hemisphere the days will start to get lighter and that is really welcome.

From A to Z, it seems like most cultures needed festivals at this time of year to help them survive the winter.  Mom started to tell us all their names and became overwhelmed: Beiwi, Brumalia, Chawmas, Christmas (we know that one), Maidyarem, Dongzhi, Goru, Hanukkah (we know that one too), Hogmanay, Inti Raymi, Junkanoo, Karachum, Koleda, Wren Day, Lenaia, Lohri, St Lucy’s Day…..    So we decided we are going to celebrate everyday because somewhere, someone is, so we will too!

Happy Solstice everyone and may the sky fall on your head and you catch it on your tongue and taste it’s sweetness – SNOW BALL FIGHT!!!!!

Throw the snow ball at someone and let us know who in the comments so we can throw one at them too!

Friday’s Sea Dragon

nationalgeographicmagazine: Weedy Sea DragonPhotograph by Richard WylieThe camouflage that weedy sea dragons use to hide in the temperate marine vegetation they derive their name from is so successful that once they reach adulthood they have no natural predators. Unfortunately they are still at risk due to habitat destruction. The males of the species carry the bright pink, fertilized eggs underneath their tails for about two months before the fully formed young hatch and are left to fend for themselves. 12.20.12 Puppies Are Not Toys Pledge

We took the “Puppies Are Not Toys Pledge” sponsored by RumpyDog and he sent us this wonderful prize pack from the ASPCA of NYC.  We grew up in New York so we feel a special affinity to anything from up there.  What great fun this has been to win something for a pledge that we would take anyway,  Thank you Rumpy and DeDe and June Buggy for making people smarter about this sad fact.

We love opening boxes and we never won anything before so this was neato! We won a new jingle bell collar (which is a little tight, but maybe they thought we were elf dogs), a new SantaPaws stocking (which is absolutely gorgeous), a cat toy for the kitties, an ASPCA wrist band for Mom, a box of Walker’s Scottie Dog Shortbread cookies for our guests, a box of doggy gift cards, and a really neat orange tote bag to put it all in.  Yahoooooo!!!  We feel really special.  Thank you RumpyDog, you made our day. Also a big thanks to Olivia Melikhov at the ASPCA for getting this to us so quickly.

I don’t have any prizes to give away, but please take the pledge.  Your gift is one less animal in a shelter or neglected because they were not right for a family that did not really understand that Pets Are Not Toys.

12.18.12 Playing Possum

image

We have a stuffed Possum who lives with the wintering outdoor plants in the bathtub,

image

The other morning, I found him checking out the shower, so I moved him back to his plant.

image

Then in the middle of the night, he was wondering the hall.

image

He found his way to the dog kennels.

image

Sofie did not like the intruder

image

Then this morning he was ‘playing possum’ in the hall (they really do this so that you think they are dead).

image

Nine was not talking. (Possum? What Possum?)

image

But, it was becoming very clear who was helping Possum make this journey around the house.

image

Watch Out, Noel! The Possum is coming to get you.
