6.13.12 You’ve Just Gotta Have Friends

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Sofie and Nine are so cute together.  Sofie preens him like he is her little baby and she is keeping him clean. I have always had cats and dogs that had special bonds.  Nikki dog loved Alice cat.  Alice used to do this little dance in front of Nikki and nudge her on the nose.  Miss Constance Kitty really loved Squash E Bear.  She would hang on his tail like it was another kitten and he would wag and wag to make her move up and down playfully.  But this relationship between Sofie and Nine is interesting to me.  I have never seen a dog nibble on the cat before, and I have never seen them snuggle for long periods of time like these 2 do.  Now, don’t be mistaken here, Sofie still chases Nine down the hall when she feels like it and say ‘I’m the dog so you better run!,” but I think their relationship is special.  Does your dog and cat snuggle?  Louise will tolerate the cats but she doesn’t want them to near for to long, which to me seems the more ‘normal’ cat/dog relationship.  I just love what Sofie and Nine have.

6.8.12 “You’re Out of Here!”

I am not sure how such an angelic looking little cat could create such a huge up roar at the zoo?  Nine has got everybody running, yelling, scratching, peeing…  he is just one humongous trouble maker. I don’t go anywhere in the house without carrying a water bottle to squirt him when he starts to beat up on Muffin or chase Kitty.  I have seen him perch on a ledge and wait to bounce on poor 5 lb. Muffin (who in his younger years would have beat the living daylights out of him!)  I hear cat-a-wails outside my office during the day, and find poor Kitty, hiding under the dining room table (after she has peed in some corner to show her dissatisfaction).  Oh my!  I always forget what having kittens is like until I get them again.  Truthfully, I find puppies so much easier.  He will be a great cat when he grows up, but he may not make it that far if he doesn’t start minding his manners around here!  Do you hear that, Nine!  Listen up!

6.4.12 Mom’s Sick Day

Remember when you felt like ‘sunshowers’ should be legal grounds for cutting school. I wish, other than being ill, there was a way to just get a day off of the responsibility roller coaster.

Animal caretakers don’t get a day off.  Animals still need to be feed and cared for, no matter how bad you feel.  It is not their fault the human is sick; they still deserve to eat.  Dogs need to be walked or at least let out.  Cat boxes need to be scooped. Cages need to be cleaned. And even human children (up to the age of 30, I think) still want to know what Mom is making for dinner (even if you have not gotten out of bed since the morning).

The concept of Mom being sick is incommodious in this house: inconvenient and not given any space to exist.  The animals, though non-comprehensive of why Mommy is asleep during the light hours, at least try to cuddle and make contact. The humans….. they just fall apart,  In my house the world kind of comes to a weird slow down.  Children, who were capable of making decisions yesterday, all of a sudden need input on things while you are sleeping and they need it now! Or there is the other ‘responsible adult,’ who is in total denial of the situation (maybe in fear that giving it credence might somehow make it last longer then desired), so the mailbox overflows, the newpapers pile up, etc.  All in 36 hrs….  hahahahhahahaha.

When you are part of a pack, a zoo, a family wheel, with roles, tasks, and inter-dependencies, it is really hard when the linchpin slips.  The wheel kind of woobles until it is reset. I am glad to say everyone survived my food poisoning episode (though I thought I would die), but just in case I do something stupid like that again, I will try to make sure there are dinners in the freezer and that the dogs are already walked and feed before I collapse.  And I will try not to do it when family is coming in from out of town, one of the kids is graduating, and ……

5.26.12 Nine’s Friend, Skink

image

Nine has a friend outside the bathroom window. His friend lives under the shutters.  The little Skink was sticking its head out and in, out and in, just to make Nine crazy.  I tried to get a picture of his friend in the shutters, but he was very shy and kept hiding each time I went to snap a shot. Both Nine and Stella spend a lot of time in the bathroom window with the Skinks.  I have a little birdhouse right by that window and I wonder sometimes if they are living in there too. Ground skinks are small, smooth-scaled lizards with an adult length of 3 to 5.5 inches.  They are typically a copper brown with a dark line running along each side of the body.  Th ground skink has a long tail, sometimes up to 2.5 times the body and short limbs. Their small limbs are relatively unused, as ground skinks use their slender bodies to wriggle and burrow through leaf litter and loose soil.  They prey on insects, spiders, and other earthworms.

Nine and Stella pray on them.

5.23.12 Remote Control

“Why do guys hog the TV remote?”  Just kidding.

I would like to understand why male cats seem to want to sleep on the television remote.  Even on the coffee table, Muffy or Nine find it and sit on it.  This is Nine taking a nap on my king size bed. He has all this space to lie in and he sleeps on the little remote.  Now I understand the newspaper thing; that is where your attention is focused and they want to be the center of your attention, so they lie on the paper..  But why the TV remote? And why only my male cats?

5.18.12 How Nine Sees It

As I was taking a picture of Stella, Nine, the troublemaker, jumped in front of the camera.  Of course he did, he is Nine!  Hear him Roar!  This made me think about life from the animals view.  For one thing, they are almost always looking up at us humans, unless they have been able to climb up on something and then they do that vulture thing and stare down at you.  I’ve read varying opinions on whether animals see color, not that it matters, but sometimes I do wonder what they are visually attracted to.  I don’t think their eyes are the most important sense for them.  I learned that when Squash, the dog, lost his sight.  They rely a lot on smell and hearing.  I do wonder sometimes if cats see ghosts, because I can walk into the room and a bunch of them will be staring at something that I just can not see.  I don’t find the dogs doing that kind of thing, but they do other weird things like hear or smell a fox 3 blocks away through the walls of the house. Often I get down on the floor with the animals and look at the world from their vantage point.  Now I know that my eye sight is different.  I definitely have a range of color, and my eyes are in a different place on my head, but I try to get a feel from their side.  It also helps me find lost toys, bones, and miscellaneous pieces of crumbled paper that the cats play with.
