Wonderful Wednesday: Could have been dead by Christmas

The holiday was great but it almost wasn’t. You see I did a bunch of stuff that I shouldn’t have and scared Mom half to death; I could have killed myself.

Last Wednesday before the holiday, V was making candy and stuff for the holidays and had to stop because it was time to go get a haircut. When no one was looking I managed to steal a block of Baker’s Chocolate. Yes, that deadly stuff that could kill dogs, especially little ones. Mom was out at the gym and when she got home (about 30 minutes after V left), I had already eaten about 2 ounces of it and pooped on the floor. She wasn’t sure if Bearnard ate it too because he had his nose in it also.

She quickly tried to figure out how much I had eaten and went online to the Dog Chocolate Poison Toxicity Calculator. It was semi-sweet baker’s chocolate so I was somewhere between possible seizures and death.

Of course, Mom was freaking out.

Lucky for me, however, I did not only steal the chocolate, I also got up on the kitchen table and knocked over my canister of dog kibble. (More about getting on the table later.) Mom thinks that all the dog food helped me not get “as sick,” from the deadly chocolate because it may have absorbed some of the poison.

Chocolate has things called Theobromine and Caffeine in it. These chemicals create Methylaxanthines which are harmless to humans but can be deadly dangerous to us pets. Animals metabolize food in a different way than humans.

I wasn’t done yet, however. Even though Mom had holiday presents hidden in her office for months, now that I had the smell of yummy deadly chocolate on my mind, I went into a cardboard bag, in a plastic bag, in a cardboard box of presents in her office, and I ate 4 milk chocolate balls a few hours later. Mom didn’t even realize that I had that great a nose. I had not bothered any of her gifts that she had been hiding, so it didn’t even enter her mind that I would rip open a closed package. I went downstairs and pooped in the same place Mom had just shampooed from my earlier exploit. Wasn’t that nice of me?

At this point, Mom figured she should contact the vet, but it was already 8 PM and they were closed, so she called emergency to ask if she should do something called ‘induce vomiting,’ which sounds terrible. The nice lady on the phone said to watch me closely, and she could use hydrogen peroxide if she wanted to, but that was up to her. So she didn’t thankfully, because I was acting mostly myself, except I needed to go potty every 30 minutes. Bearnard was fine. I don’t let him get much food if I can help it. He doesn’t care and I want everything I can eat.

I woke Mom every 2 hours during the night for 3 days to go outside. At least it was not raining or snowing but it was dark and cold.

I need to tell you about the kitchen table. Since Noel is so old, she can’t jump up on the counter and eat in her herb window anymore, so Mom has been feeding her on the kitchen table. She can get up there by jumping on a cabinet in the living room and then going through the dining room to kitchen pass-through window. Well, it did not take me long to figure that out. So I have been stealing her food when Mom wasn’t looking and Mom thought that Noel had finished her dinner. Mom caught on to my antics when she saw me up on the kitchen table one day, so she stopped feeding Noel there if she wasn’t watching. Mom thought she had me fooled.

However, I got up there the day that I ate the chocolate and I knocked down my food canister, which was supposed to be secure Mom said, and helped myself to 1/2 a bag of dog kibble. So then Mom moved the cabinet in the dining room from under the window so that I could not follow Noel and get on the table. My access was gone (or so she thought).

But wait! Mom put a box of Christmas presents under the window so that she could wrap them on the dining room table. It was a low box, so she figured it was safe. Oh, did I tell you Mom loves to bake (LoriansKitchen.com). She had made this awesome gluten and dairy-free chocolate walnut strudel with amazing little leaves and acorns on it. Yep, you got it. I am really smart. Mom was cooling her treat on the kitchen table and I managed to help myself to all her beautiful handy work. (Before and after pictures below)

My Mom really doesn’t understand that I have the most incredible nose and can jump like a cat and get everywhere, especially when it comes to food. Now she thinks she has removed every way for me to get on the table except the cat tree, which is how Noel is getting up to the kitchen (she path below).

I think I will try that next.

My gift to Mom this year was to survive the holidays. What did you give your Mom? – Jolie Olie, the best nose in the business.

May your New Year be merry and bright!

Wonderful Wednesday: It Is Almost Time

We are waiting and hoping that our stockings will be filled with wonderful treats and toys. Mom said that if we are extra good and behave ourselves the next few weeks there may be a special holiday dinner in our future. We are thinking sweet potatoes and turkey, maybe even green beans (we love those).

It’s almost time!

Wonderful Wednesday: Hanukkahs Past

Noel 2020

Charles, Louise, and Sofie 2017

Nine and Mini Cooper 2017

Stella and Noel 2015

Sofie 2014

Over the years the animals have enjoyed many holiday celebrations. This year, they will light the lights of the menorah to celebrate Hanukkah once again. Here are pictures of some wonderful holiday moments from years gone by.

By the way, there is no wrong way to spell, Hanukkah. You may have seen the holiday spelled like Hanukkah, Hannuka, or Chanukah… the list goes on. The most common version is probably Hanukkah, but all of the spellings are actually accurate. Because there is no correct way to directly translate the Hebrew sounds to English, it could be spelled in a variety of different ways, each equally correct.

Eat some doughnuts or latkes and enjoy the festival of lights for 8 nights.

Wonderful Wednesday: Thankful Beg-a-thon

Mom says I am the Queen of Begging. Especially when there is really really really good-smelling stuff to beg for.

Can you find me trying to sneak onto the table? (pic by K8 – thx)

My Aunt B asked Mom why every picture of us looked like we were asking for food? That’s because we always are.

We hope you got all the turkey and fixings of your dreams. Now Mom is getting ready for the next holiday cook – potato latkes!

Did you know that Mom has a food blog? lorianskitchen.com  You can find many of her gluten-free, dairy-free, and occasionally vegan recipes there (Peanut was vegan for 6 years but now is Pescatarian). Why doesn’t Mom have her dog food recipes there? We want to know!

– Jolie Olie the Queen of Begging (don’t tell Noel because she is the Queen of Everything).

Wonderful Wednesday: Wherever I Am, There’s Always 2…

Two helpers in my office

Do you know that poem by A.A.Milne: “Wherever I am, there’s always Pooh, There’s always Pooh and Me. Whatever I do, he wants to do, “Where are you going today?” Says Pooh: “Well, that’s very odd ‘cos I was too.”?

Three amigos on the couch

Well, such is my life at the DogDaz Zoo and if it isn’t two, it’s three or four. They all want to do, whatever I do.

As Pooh says, “It isn’t much fun for One, but Two,” and here we add just a few.

Two sleeping dog on the recliner

“Us Two” – A.A. Milne

Wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,

There’s always Pooh and Me.

Whatever I do, he wants to do,

“Where are you going today?” says Pooh:

“Well, that’s very odd ‘cos I was too.

Let’s go together,” says Pooh, says he.

“Let’s go together,” says Pooh.

“What’s twice eleven?” I said to Pooh.

(“Twice what?” said Pooh to Me.)

“I think it ought to be twenty-two.”

“Just what I think myself,” said Pooh.

“It wasn’t an easy sum to do, But that’s what it is,” said Pooh, said he.

“That’s what it is,” said Pooh.

“Let’s look for dragons,” I said to Pooh.

“Yes, let’s,” said Pooh to Me.

We crossed the river and found a few-

“Yes, those are dragons all right,” said Pooh.

“As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.

That’s what they are,” said Pooh, said he.

“That’s what they are,” said Pooh.

“Let’s frighten the dragons,” I said to Pooh.

“That’s right,” said Pooh to Me.

“I’m not afraid,” I said to Pooh,

And I held his paw and I shouted “Shoo!

Silly old dragons!”- and off they flew.

“I wasn’t afraid,” said Pooh, said he,

“I’m never afraid with you.”

So wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,

There’s always Pooh and Me.

“What would I do?” I said to Pooh,

“If it wasn’t for you,” and Pooh said: “True,

It isn’t much fun for One, but Two,

Can stick together, says Pooh, says he. “That’s how it is,” says Pooh.

Wonderful Wednesday: Time to LEAF

Jolie here – Big tree has decided it is time to pick up and LEAVE all over the yard. Mom and V sweep and rake and sweep and rake but the trees just keep leaving.

We are actually having fun in the crunchy leaves but they get stuck to my beard and I carry them everywhere.

Good thing that Bearnard is so little or someone would mistake him for a baby black bear this time of year.

We hope you are enjoying the colors that come with the chill. Happy November.

Wonderful Wednesday: Jolie Isn’t Sure About Him

Jolie is a Mama’s girl. After over a year (she came to us in July 2022) of not having to share Mom very much, because Charles wasn’t really a lap guy and the cats don’t count, she is not sure she likes this new dog.

I am guessing that her 6-1/2 years of living in a cage with other dogs made her into the ‘must get every scrap of food I can’ kind of dog. She wants all the food and all the cookies and all my time. She is not food or resource-aggressive at all, just pushy.

Now that Bearnard is here, Jolie is not sure about this whole ‘other’ dog thing, Though she does run and bark with him around the yard and at the door. She also has found that he is very food selective so he drops a lot of the treats he is given, which she quickly swoops in and eats. She does like that about him.

Having to share Mom’s lap is still questionable, but she is working on it. There really is no choice since, Mr. Zoom around the house, jump and spin, Bearnard, doesn’t understand boundaries very well yet. She is teaching him with a growl and a push.

Mom thinks over time (it has only been 3 weeks) they are going to be the bestest of friends. We will keep you posted.

Have a WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY!

Wonderful Wednesday: Welcome, BEARnard

We would like to introduce you to the newest member of the zoo, BEARnard.

Bearnard joined us on September 2. He fits in very well and is a sweet and rambunctious boy. The rescue he came through, WorthyDog.org, was awesome to work with.

So here is what we were told:

  • Bear was turned in at a high-kill shelter in rural South Carolina in June. The people who turned him in with another dog, a puggly-looking thing, said they could not afford them anymore. He had never seen a vet; had not been neutered; had no birthdate or any other information. The shelter said he was terrified.
  • The rescue transported him to Virginia and immediately got him shots and neutered.
  • He was fostered by a nice couple who lived on the Virginia/West Virginia border with a bunch of Chihuahuas and 2 cats.
  • The vet thinks he is about 2 or 3 years old and a Papillon mix,
  • He weighs 15 lbs,

The rescue intake picture. The poor thing is terrified.

It appears that Bear, now BEARnard, was never really inside. He is only just learning that indoors is different especially when it comes to the bathroom.

Now I have 2 knee protectors

He is a velcro dog and does not give Jolie much space between him and me. He wants always to be on me, next to me, near me, see me. (Don’t worry, Jojo is still getting a lot of Mommy cuddles.)

He is supposed to be V’s little dog, to fill the space where Mr. Charles was, but it does not currently appear to be working out that way.

We absolutely love him. He is funny and zoommy and is really putting Jolie (and me) through our paces. Jojo is used to old man Charles (who was 15 when he passed), so the age difference is big in terms of energy. Jolie is 7-1/2 and Bearnard is 2 or something. I think they will be great friends over time.

And you might wonder about the cats: Noel, the 16-1/2-year-old, basically told him the lay of the land the minute he came inside, but Mini Cooper (she’s 9 and usually so brave) is still trying to figure him out. He chases her (of course she runs and slinks), so she hid for the first week and 1/2 in the bedroom behind a rocking chair. Now it appears she is settling down and I actually think she will like him as much as she did Charles.

What a gift our new little man is.  Welcome to your furever home, Bearnard.

Wistful Wednesday: Farewell to Hazel

It is with great sadness that I tell you about the loss of our grandcat, Hazel, on August 28. She was such a sweetheart. K8 adopted Hazel 3 years ago when she was about 4 years old. She loved to sit in the window and play with her brother, Freddie Purrcury. Her favorite thing was to scare her mother half to death by sitting for hours on the ledge at the top of the second-floor stairwell (with no net).

Sadly, cancer seemed to consume her little body very quickly. May her memory be a blessing and may she continue to purr over the rainbow bridge with the rest of the angels from the extended zoo. Purr on sweet girl, you are missed.

Wonderful Wednesday: Stella Turns 12

Miss Stella turns 12 years old today. She lives her solitary life of joy and continues to smile and purr and amuse as long as she is not with any other animals. We do love you, Stella.

Stella has lived in her own suite away from all the other animals since she was 4 (a long time now). She was bullying Noel once Mini Cooper came to live with us. Originally we were going to put Noel in the suite to give her a break from the bully, but the vet suggested that it was Stella who maybe wanted to be alone. And she does. Stella has lunch or dinner with a human and watches a lot of HGTV and the cooking channel. We tried Animal Planet but V thought it was too violent for Stella so, home decorating it is.

Happy Birthday, Big Girl
