We are trying to determine where to place the National Wildlife Federation‘s Certified Wildlife Habitat Plaque we received last winter for the property. The dogs are very proud to be part of the environmentally sensitive landscaping and help by digging strategic holes in certain critical areas and especially keeping the gardens clear of moles, voles, and bunnies (you know I am kidding about the proud part, right). The first grapes of the year are starting to bud, and if you look carefully you can see tiny tiny little grapes on the vine. Sofie and Lulu especially like to chew on the grape stalks (yum… tasty). We just got 2 new rain barrels to try and hold back some of the erosion that is going on from years of drought. We are losing so much top soil and everything is just turning to sand (which Sofie really likes, because to her, it is one big sand box). I love the yard in spring. This morning we sat and watched some new orange and brown butterflies (I need to get the book out to see what kind they are) suckling on the azaleas.
And the ducks are back quacking their heads off and walking all over the pool cover. They make Lulu and Sofie crazy because the pool area is fenced off and the dogs can’t run at the ducks to chase them away.
Spring has come to the Mid-Atlantic.

“How come the cats get to sleep on the bed with you but Lulu and I have to stay on the floor?” “No fair!” “We want to come up on the bed and snuggle with you, the heck with those silly cats!” “I promise I won’t take up the whole bed like Muffin does, I know you told me he becomes a ‘St. Bernard’ (whatever that is) when he sleep with you.” “I promise I will be a good girl if you just let me come up with you and the cats, really I will.” ” Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssseeeeee!”

My dogs just seem to ‘wolf down’ their food. I worry that they are eating to fast and will get sick. Last night, I gave the girls their supper in these fun food toys. Lulu has a purple bottle. This is her second bottle. She broke the first one by throwing it down the stairs to get the food out (she is so smart). Now I have gotten smarter: I put the gate up so they can’t throw things down the stairs anymore. To get the food out, Louise has to pull the string just a certain way. I love to watch her pick the whole thing up and drop it down.
Sofie has a blue food cube. She has to roll the cube around just right for the food to come out. This cube ends up in some pretty strange places. It was lost for a month under the den couch. I looked everywhere, but somehow it got there.
This game slows their eating down a lot and also gives them about 30 minutes of play time. The only trouble is that when they were done with the bottle and the cube… they went to their bowls and wanted to know where dinner was!

Let me start by saying Sofie is a wonderful dog and I love her a lot. I am amazed how smart she is and how stubborn and manipulative. Even with the e-collar, which has worked wonders, if I don’t train her every day, she slips back into old habits. If you give this little imp an inch, she will take a mile. Things were going great, until last week when I got really busy with work and could not get the time to train her every day. Today, she decided she just isn’t going to listen to anything and she is whining whining whining. Yesterday, when I was not looking, she sneaked under the pool fence and went for a hop on the winter cover. And she was doing so well. I guess we all have to act out sometimes…..

Lulu thinks that sitting in the sun is fun. I really do not understand why a black dog loves to lie in the sun, but she does. 
She has a few favorite spots on the deck and she would stay there all day, if I let her. I worry that she will get sun burned. Do dogs get sun burned? Sofie has a really thick coat, so I only worry about her nose, but Lulu has a thin single coat and she has pink skin, so I worry. I’m not a sun worshiper, so I just don’t get it.

I want to live with the abandon my dogs have. Rolling on their backs and laughing and smiling. Waiting to have their tummies rubbed. I can have ‘a little’ abandon now, but, on Monday, I have to get back to the work. If truly there is a karmic wheel and I get to come around again, I would like to be owned by a nice lady like myself, who buys lots of dog toys and treats, and plays with us a lot, and then I would just run around and have fun all day with my humans and my animal friends. Wow, does that sound nice. Really changes the perspective of the expression, ‘going to the dogs.’ because that is exactly where I want to be.
