Jolie has a lovely neighborhood young lady who walks her during the week. The other day, however, we broke heat records for April here in Annapolis. When walking your dog you need to be very aware of the outside temperature. Little and really big dogs can overheat very quickly. Heat stroke is a real thing and should be avoided at all costs.
I use the 5-second ground test before walking: I place my hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, and if it is too hot for my hand then it is definitely too hot for a paw.

Also, you need to apply this temperature warning before taking your pets in the car. Even with the windows open a car can heat up or freeze very fast. If it is over 70 or under 40 degrees, leave them at home.

Spring is an awesome time to play in the fields and take nice walks. Keep everyone COOL!

I can’t believe that it has already been a year since Sofie left us (1 year today). There is never a day that her presence isn’t felt in my heart. She was such a unique spirit and not having her here, in the house, in the yard, continues to feel odd. I know that Charles missed her terribly after she passed as did I. They say that time heals all wounds and what is a year in the scheme of time, so I will just have to give it more. I miss you Sofie Bear but know that you are out of pain and stress and anxiety. I hope you and Louise and Nine are all there on the bridge waiting for me.

There is a cat bed on the big bed, which was for Mini to stay warm at night.

But Charles decided he liked to sleep in it during the nite. Which was OK I guess, since Mini went elsewhere and didn’t kick up a fuss.

But then Jolie decided that she liked the bed.
Now someone is always in the bed on the bed.
Have a wonderful Wednesday and beware the Ides of March. You never know what could happen.

Mom said that the kids are coming over for lunch today (to Mom they will always be kids, but to us, they are big humans). We are waiting by the open door on the steps to greet them. Mini, the other dog, likes to wait with us too. If you look all the way at the top of the stairs you will also she Noel. She is too scared to come down.

Sometimes Noel will wait at the door, but the slightest movement outside tends to scare her so she doesn’t stay long. We on the other hand, love the steps and can wait, not so patiently, for at least 5 minutes before going to do something else.

How long can you wait for something?

Just a normal afternoon of preening and rolling. These two have become best friends and you find them together a great deal of the time. Mini Cooper has always been the other dog anyway. She is the only cat we have ever had that meets everyone at the door and runs with the dogs (instead of running away from them). It is awesome when life at the zoo just happens uneventfully.
Hope your Wednesday is wonderful too. What’s your normal?

It is hard to believe that we have only been with Jolie since July. She seems like such an integral part of the zoo. Every animal, even Stella, loves her. She is silly and loving and always hungry. I made her pictures mostly into cartoons for her bday. Happy 7th ‘Lil Bit. You make us all smile.
And what is the chance of having one love with a Valentine’s Day birthday? We have 2! Happy bday in heaven today, Mr. Nine. We miss you tons.

Sending flowers, candy, and treats to all our blog friends for Valentine’s Day! Let’s Party!

Today is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth President. Let’s learn more about his love for animals.
He loved cats and could play with them for hours. When asked if her husband had a hobby, Mary Todd Lincoln replied, “cats.” President Lincoln visited General Grant at City Point, Virginia in March of 1865. The civil war was drawing to a close and the enormous task of reuniting the country lay ahead, yet the President made time to care for three orphaned kittens. Abraham Lincoln noticed three stray kittens in the telegraph hut. Picking them up and placing them in his lap, he asked about their mother. When the President learned that the kittens’ mother was dead, he made sure the kittens would be fed and a good home found for them.

President Lincoln’s compassion extended to turkeys, too. Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation on October 3, 1863, setting aside the last Thursday of November, “as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise.” A turkey was sent to the White House for Thanksgiving dinner in 1863, and Tad, Lincoln’s son, named him Tom. Tad befriended the turkey and pleaded with his father to grant “Tom” a stay of execution. Abraham Lincoln took time out from a cabinet meeting to issue “an order of reprieve,” sparing the turkey’s life.
Mr. Lincoln’s compassion extended to dogs, too. Fido was a mixed breed with floppy ears and a yellowish coat. When fireworks and cannons announced Abraham Lincoln’s victory in the Presidential election of 1860, poor Fido was terrified. The Lincolns were worried that the long train trip to Washington, D.C., combined with loud noises, would terrify Fido. John and Frank Roll, two neighborhood boys, promised to take good care of Fido. Mr. Lincoln made them promise to let Fido inside the house whenever he scratched at the front door, never scold Fido for entering the house with muddy paws, and feed him if he came to the dinner table. The Lincolns gave the Rolls their sofa so Fido would feel at home! Did you know “Fido” is Latin? Fido is from “Fidelitas,” which translates as “faithful.”
Nanny and Nanko were White House goats. Tad and Willie liked to hitch the goats to carts or kitchen chairs and have the goats pull them through the White House. Both Nanny and Nanko liked to chew things. Nanny got in trouble for chewing up the flowers at the Old Soldier’s Home. Nanko got in trouble for chewing the bulbs planted by White House Gardener, John Watt.
The Lincolns also had rabbits and cats. Mr. Lincoln named his horse Old Bob. Old Bob was the rider-less horse with a pair of boots turned backward in the stirrups in Abraham Lincoln’s funeral procession.

We got haircuts and no matter how hard Mom tried, we did not want her to take a good picture of the 2 of us.
Here is the best we let her get. She says we look so pretty.
