Storm season brings with it many nights of stressed-out dogs and no sleep for me. I am trying a new thing by creating a tent that Louise and Sofie can hide under or just throwing a blanket over Sofie. Louise will stay under a lean-to as long as I am with her, but Sofie is just too freaked to deal with it. The blanket over her, nose exposed, while I cuddle her tight seems to soothe a little, but not much works. The thunder vest has been worthless for many years. I tried Xanax but the storms either come earlier or later than expected, so dosing is hard. It doesn’t stop them from getting upset, but they do seem to fall asleep earlier.
Sofie has decided that she needs to be up on my bed and chew on my pillows to protect me, I guess, from the noise.
Noise is our enemy at the Zoo. I’m glad that most fireworks displays were canceled this year (I hate the noise too). But that won’t stop my neighbors from doing their loud and noisy things from now until August.
Have any of you tried dog headphones to shut out noise?

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution, passed on June 14, 1777, stated: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” This design was created by Francis Hopkinson, a Continental Congressman from New Jersey and a consultant to the design of the Great Seal of the United States. – Wikipedia

There is something about a pet’s nose. It makes you just want to take your finger and go ‘Boop!’ Do you ‘Boop?’ It is easy to do around the Zoo since we have a lot of head butting animals who come and ask for it.

Of all the animals at the DogDaz Zoo, Louise seems to be the one with the most patience.
She is so good at waiting;
- waiting for Mom to get out of bed;
- waiting for breakfast;
- waiting to go for a walk;
- waiting to go out in the yard;
- waiting for dinner;
- waiting for playtime;
- waiting for me to sit down…
She even has to wait when a human or another dog passes by on a walk (I make her sit and stay then as well).
Wow, I am just one mean Mom.
Ahhh, a dog’s life is full of waiting. Actually, though, I don’t think she minds very much.
She is a very patient soul.
WHAT DO YOU WAIT FOR?

If I have to be stuck in quarantine, at least I am blessed to be with the best group of crazy animals on the planet.

Because I worked from home for over 25 years (when I wasn’t on a plane somewhere), I was able to surround myself with a herd of rescues, all who were used to me being available to them as a lap, as a feeder, and a walker. Then, 15 months ago, when I started working in an office, our home life changed totally. I had to bring in dog walkers during the day and had less time to be there for cuddles and care. But, the gift of COVID-19 quarantine brought me back to working from the house once again. And now, I am not sure that they will ever let me go back to the office.
I just read that 54% of the people surveyed said they would like to continue to work from home at least part of the time when they are allowed to return to their workplace. What about you? Do you want to stay home with the puppies?

Mini Cooper is one of those cats that has a need for touch. Charles, the dog, on the other hand, likes to be near humans and other animals but does not like to be on your lap or cuddled too close. That is what makes this picture so interesting. Lately, Mini has started reaching out and laying a paw on him when she can. Is this a sign of her primal need to keep track of a predator? I wanted to know more about a cat’s sense of touch so I did a little research and thought I would share it with you.
Cats have whiskers on their upper lip, on their cheeks, and above their eyes, but did you know that they also have whiskers behind their front wrists? These are called carpal hairs. The whiskers on a cat touch like fingers do.
According to Michael Broad in a post in POC (Pictures Of Cats.org), “A cat’s sense of touch includes sensing pressure, warmth, cold and pain. Touch is the first sense that is utilized in the newborn cat as it is the earliest developed sense.”
The cat’s paw has a large number of receptors that respond to pressure and the highest density of those receptors are found ‘between the foot and the toe pads.” (The Cat, Its Behavior, Nutrition & Health published by Blackwell Publishing – IBSN 978-0-8138-0031-9 — page 46 and 47)
But does Mini really have a need for touch? Experts say that cats enjoy and need contact, just like humans do. Most of that they get in the form of petting or grooming. In Mini’s case, however, she seems to have more of a need than other cats. Maybe it comes from the fact that we held her all the time when she was a kitten (and too young to be away from her mother).
The one thing I do know is that Mini loves to have her paw on Charles, or Mom, or any warm body. I want to believe that gives her comfort.
