If I have to be stuck in quarantine, at least I am blessed to be with the best group of crazy animals on the planet.

Because I worked from home for over 25 years (when I wasn’t on a plane somewhere), I was able to surround myself with a herd of rescues, all who were used to me being available to them as a lap, as a feeder, and a walker. Then, 15 months ago, when I started working in an office, our home life changed totally. I had to bring in dog walkers during the day and had less time to be there for cuddles and care. But, the gift of COVID-19 quarantine brought me back to working from the house once again. And now, I am not sure that they will ever let me go back to the office.
I just read that 54% of the people surveyed said they would like to continue to work from home at least part of the time when they are allowed to return to their workplace. What about you? Do you want to stay home with the puppies?

Mini Cooper is one of those cats that has a need for touch. Charles, the dog, on the other hand, likes to be near humans and other animals but does not like to be on your lap or cuddled too close. That is what makes this picture so interesting. Lately, Mini has started reaching out and laying a paw on him when she can. Is this a sign of her primal need to keep track of a predator? I wanted to know more about a cat’s sense of touch so I did a little research and thought I would share it with you.
Cats have whiskers on their upper lip, on their cheeks, and above their eyes, but did you know that they also have whiskers behind their front wrists? These are called carpal hairs. The whiskers on a cat touch like fingers do.
According to Michael Broad in a post in POC (Pictures Of Cats.org), “A cat’s sense of touch includes sensing pressure, warmth, cold and pain. Touch is the first sense that is utilized in the newborn cat as it is the earliest developed sense.”
The cat’s paw has a large number of receptors that respond to pressure and the highest density of those receptors are found ‘between the foot and the toe pads.” (The Cat, Its Behavior, Nutrition & Health published by Blackwell Publishing – IBSN 978-0-8138-0031-9 — page 46 and 47)
But does Mini really have a need for touch? Experts say that cats enjoy and need contact, just like humans do. Most of that they get in the form of petting or grooming. In Mini’s case, however, she seems to have more of a need than other cats. Maybe it comes from the fact that we held her all the time when she was a kitten (and too young to be away from her mother).
The one thing I do know is that Mini loves to have her paw on Charles, or Mom, or any warm body. I want to believe that gives her comfort.

Mr. Charles weaves in and out and under the big dogs. Sometimes I get some very creative macrame knots in the leashes. The last one was really hard to undo. I tried one of those multi-leash handle things and it was terrible. The dogs don’t seem to mind the knot until they get too close to each other. Personally, I try for big dogs on the left and Lil’ on the right, but you know they have their own mind (and sniffing patterns).

It is really nice to be able to take more walks with Mom. When the rain breaks (there has been a lot of it this week), we ‘saddle up’ as she calls it, and stroll along the lane.

It is nice to see so many spring flowers, like the rootbeer iris, blooming in the yard. We are eating a lot of grass. Mom thinks it is because this early grass tastes really sweet and we are not about to argue.
The only challenge lately with all this walking is that tons of people we never knew lived in our neighborhood are out with children and bicycles and even worse, puppies!!! Our walks are not the quite strolls that Mom likes. Now they are fraught with having to turn around halfway down the street because dogs we don’t know with people who can’t seem to control them are barrelling towards us. We aren’t always the friendliest to strangers (we have to protect Mom, you know).
What did you do on your Wonderful Wednesday walk?

Mom was around a lot more than usual this month. She said it was due to something called ‘Corona.’
It sure made it nice for afternoon walks.

Louise hates rain. Sometimes I take her out the garage door instead of on to the deck because that goes directly out onto grass so that she thinks she is not getting as wet. In every life, a little rain must fall.
Have a sunny Black and White Sunday!
