3.25.12 “One more story, Mom, Please!”

image

It's time to go 'nite nite'

It’s time to go “nite- nite,” but where is Sofie?  Louise is already in bed fast asleep.  Sofie is hiding (or so she thinks) under the curtains. She was actually in her kennel a moment ago, but I turned around to do something and she decided to go hide.  It is not that she does not like her Kennel, it is all about being able to decide whether she is going to do what she is told.  Ah, the endless power struggles with this little one.  Finally, I actually got her on her feet and gave her no option, so she reluctantly went in.  We go through this almost every night lately.  I do find it funny because it reminds me of when the kids were little and they would say, “Just one more story, or one more song! PLEASEEEEEEE!”

Mommy won't see me if I hide under the bedroom curtain. I am so smart!

image I can hear Lil’ Sofie in my head saying “Do i really have to go “Nite-Nite” Mom?  Could you leave the curtain up just a little so that I can make sure you are still near by?  Could you turn on the TV so I can hear some music? Can I have another drink of water?  Lulu is such a goodie-goodie – I want to play some more! Please, Please, Please… “  You have to love these little ones because they are such a joy.

Just another dogdaz evening at our house ❤

3.16.12 I Love A Parade!

This is Lulu Belle and I wanted to discuss 3 special days in March with you.

Yesterday was the Ides of March.  That is the name of the 15th day of March in the Roman calendar.  The Ides of March was a festive day dedicated to the god Mars and a military parade was usually held.  In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was killed in 44 B.C. Caesar was stabbed (23 times) to death in the Roman Senate by a group of conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. The group included 60 other co-conspirators according to Plutarch.  (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ides_of_March)

In neo-modern times, it is also known as ‘the day before Mommy’s birthday’ which is today, 16 March.  We think Mommy was born later than 44 B.C. (Before Cats?) but we are not sure.  Mommy tends to celebrate her birthday for a month since it falls in the middle. We have noticed that humans have parades in the streets of many towns and cities on 17 March (aka St. Patrick’s Day**) to also celebrate Mommy.  We wonder why the parades are not held on her actual birthday but humans can be weird?  And we also wondered why people wear green and they call her Patrick, which is not her name?  Mommy does not like green, she says it matches her skin color.

(** Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is probably the most widely celebrated saint’s day in the world.  (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day))

Around our house we like the celebration idea much better than the killing of Caesar, so we are going to have a pre-birthday parade and then a post-birthday parade for Mommy.  I can’t wait until she sees what we made for her in the yard.

I love a parade ! – Lulu Belle

3.13.12 The Cat Dance

Sofie on the floor & Kitty in the dog bed

Sofie & Kitty

I do not know who decided that dogs and cats could not be friends.  Miss Constance Kitty has always loved the dogs.  She was wild about Squash and now she sticks to Sofie like glue.  Sofie and Nine, the kitten, have become really good friends too since he joined us (Little Stella kitten is somewhat shy and gives the dogs a good scratch and hiss still on occasion).  Louise tolerates the cats but doesn’t really want to play with them.  They tolerate her too.

The only dogs that my cats know are the residents.  None of my cats go outside, so they do not know ‘outside’ dogs, and it is rare we have a guest dog inside because of…. well… having 5 cats. We have a strict, “dogs not chasing cats” rule around here, which works 90% of the time, but it doesn’t work at all with strange dogs.

I find it interesting that Louise & Sofie meet many a neighborhood cat when we are walking but that they clearly do not relate the fact that their friends at home are the same species as these furry things behind the trees.  I think they think they are just another kind of squirrel.

Sofie & Nine playing

(Just an aside: As I am sitting her blogging this with Sofie and Louise under the desk, Muffin just came in the office and Sofie started to charge him.  Noel was already on my desk so there was a little fur flying for a moment… so we still do get a little tet-a-tet here at the zoo from time to time.)  Anyway….  they all (sort of) know their place and they all seem to work it out.  I know that many a dog would kill a cat if it had the chance and we have had some trouble fostering dogs because of that .  You just can’t allow the dogs to chase or get aggressive from the start with the cats or it won’t work.  Around here it does work and I really enjoy seeing the dance that the cats do with the dogs.  I remember years ago my Alice cat doing that with Nikki dog, Kitty did the dance with Squash E Bear, and now both Kitty and Nine do the dance with Sofie.    A long tradition of Cats loving dogs and doing that rub in the dog’s face dance thing that cats do.  Just another dogdaz morning at the zoo. ❤

3.8.12 Miss Manners

May I come in please?

Some dogs have manners, others don’t. I know that it is our job to teach them what is expected, but some dogs, just like people, seem to just be, well…. more mannerly (is that a word?).  Louise is very polite.  She waits like a good girl until she is told to go (most of the time).  Sofie is so excited when she is sitting by the door that even though she is sitting, she is ready to jump.  Louise waits with patience.  Now I know it is not always (sometimes she flies past me on the stairs), but in general, she just has good manners.  I like that in a dog.  Just another dogdaz morning at our house ❤

3.6.12 Lulu’s Friend: Amy

image Amy has been Louise’s friend since they were puppies (about 5 months old). They love to run around the yards and also go down to the river. Amy loves the water, Lulu, not so much.  I know that Sofie would love it but I am not a big one for giving them bathes, especially in the winter.  We stopped by Amy’s house the other day and had fun in her yard.  I think it is weird but Louise has always bitten Amy’s ears.  Ever since they were little she has gone immediately to her ears.  She sees her and bites really hard.  I don’t know what that is about.

image Lulu has had to learn to share Amy with Sofie. It is hard when you have to take your little sister everywhere. But the three of them play really well together.  What makes Mommy happy is that they sleep the rest of the afternoon after their little visit.  Amy is a sweet yellow lab and we really enjoy her and her human.  Thanks for letting us play. Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo. ❤

3.1.12 Tag… you’re it!

Wow – we are playing tag today thanks to Chuck and his wonderful Collies of the Meadow.  I have never been tagged before so this will be fun.  Thanks Chuck and Collies for including me in the game.

I will let Sofie Bear answer for the zoo on this one:

1.Describe yourselves in 7 words: Mom says that I am stubborn but also loving, silly, active, barky, whiney, and mostly Rolly Polly

Sofie always sticker her nose in everything

2. What Keeps You Up At Night?  Knowing that the cats get to roam around the house but Lulu and I have to sleep in our beds with the doors closed all night.

3. Who Would You Like To Be?  me and only me (well maybe Bassa the great Caucasian Shepard sometimes)

4. What Are You Wearing Right Now? My name collar with Mom’s cell phone number because she worries that I will dig under the fence and she wants someone to bring me home if I get lost (but they won’t be able to catch me so why wear anything).

5. What Scares You?  Plastic bags and mylar balloons, especially when the wind blows them against the fence and I can’t figure out what they are.

6. The Best And Worst Of Blogging:  Best Blogging: when Mommy blogs about me and Lulu.  Worst Blogging: when she blogs about those darn cats!

7. The Last Website I Visited?  Collies of the Meadow to thank them for making us do all this silly tag work (just kidding about the silly part)

8. What Is The One Thing I Would Change About Myself?  I want to be a towering giant not this little scrappy dog, so I act like one because Mom says, “Be the change you want.”

9.  Slankets?  If it is food, I will eat it; if it is something to wear, I will lie on it.

10.  Tell Us Something About The Dogs That Tagged You:  I have been following Collies of the Meadow for almost the whole 90 days that I have been blogging (is it really only 3 months?).  Not only have a learned a tremendous amount about the incredible Collie breed and bloodlines, but I have had a view into the life of their dad, Chuck, and his family of dogs.  Trevor, one of the seniors, is ailing and we are all praying that he finds his way with little pain.  I really enjoy checking in with them when they post and seeing what is happening in their meadow.

8 Bloggers To Tag–  I have tagged the following blogs.  If you have been tagged before, you can just post a link in the comments so we can check out your tag answers.
