For all those that I have been unkind to, have growled at, or lunged at. For all the cats that I have menaced; all the cat poo I have eaten; all the goose poo I have rolled in; all my barking and carry on. I ask that you forgive me. I am but a simple, imperfect dog and mean no harm. Please accept my humble apology.
Autumn days come quickly, like the running of a hound on the moor. –Irish proverb
Last week it was summer and this week it turned to true fall: welcome The Autumnal Equinox.
Fall was always Squash E Bears perfect time. His winter coat would start to bloom and he really looked like the perfect cuddle bear. Gosh, I miss that dog every day. I do love the current pack but there was something about Squash that even made people stop their cars in the middle of the street and ask about him. It was not really how he looked, though he was a formidable giant ball of fluff, he exuded this gentle energy that could be felt all around.
Fall is my favorite season. I love the colors, the crisp air, the smell of cider, and the pumpkin. I love how the animals start to gather all their hordes of food for winter, scurrying up and down the trees. And the smell of wood fires burning. Fall doesn’t last very long in the Mid-Atlantic anymore, we tend to go from summer heat to winter cold very quickly. So, I breathe in every moment I can get.
Oh my, I think I need to go make an apple pie. What do you love most about fall?
Louise usually holds all the leashes while I pick up stuff. But Charles just keeps marching forward.
I thread Charles’ leash on Sofie’s and Sofie’s leash on Louise; Lulu being the heaviest and the most responsible of the three.
Well, that didn’t work today.
Don’t worry, they didn’t get far. They get confused when they don’t feel the weight on the other end of the lead. I really don’t know where they would end up, but I am too afraid to find out. I would hope that it would be home, but who knows.
When there is no food involved, you would think that Sofie and Charles actually liked each other. Charles pretty much is oblivious and just wants to hang wherever the big dogs are. Sofie on the other hand really doesn’t want him around her because she worries that he will take her things and because his little dog frantic energy (zoom zoom zoom) freaks her anxious self out and she just wants him to stop.
But, for a moment or two, all is quiet. These are good moments.
So we were having tree work done. It was way past time to trim back the big trees which needed to be cleaned up, so they could breathe, as well as, be less of a danger to the house. But, in doing that, the wonderful tree climbers discovered and cut down a squirrel nest.
That evening, the owner of the tree company, bless his heart, tried to reunite the babies with their mom. But it was late and dark, and a storm had come through, so she never came.
The next morning at sunrise, we tried again, but she just wasn’t coming. Even with a tape recording of baby squirrel sounds playing loudly. So now, Rocky and Rockette, are going to live on a nice 14-acre farm after they a bottle feed for a few weeks.
Thank you tree people for caring enough to try and save the babies. And thank you, Tim Ballard, for teaching your teams about wildlife rescue. If you are in the Annapolis area, try Ballard Tree Service.
I give the dogs their lunch on the kitchen floor. It slows them down and gives them a little game to find the kibble. Well, I guess Noel, the Christmas Cat, has figured this out. She is as food-crazed as any dog and will eat anything and everything. Luckily, she sneaked up on Louise who does not mind sharing and is not food aggressive (Sofie and Charles are). Louise just kept on snacking and let Noel join in. I love that Louise!
It is getting ridiculously hot outside. Mom tried to walk me before the sun was up, but it was still too hot. Let Louise go with her, she likes it. Not me! I am not going out there unless I absolutely have to.
Who’s with me on this? I are going to boycott walks! NO WALKS! TOO HOT!
What kind of mischief did you get into today?
Remember parents, if you place your hand on the pavement and it is too hot for you, it is too hot for paws!
