I was so excited to find a skeleton version of Charles. I think the head is a little bit big, but it works for me. Happy Black and White Sunday!

Squash E Bear
Fall 2007
It wouldn’t be fall without a look back at the master of fall himself, Squash E. Bear. He looked great in the fall leaves with his big fluffy coat. Squash was the kind of dog that people would just stop and look at; “Can I pet him?” “What is he?” Once people actually stopped their car when I was walking him to ask about him. And then there was the time he and I were in a pet food store buying food and there was one of those weekend pet adoption fairs going on and someone actually tried to buy him off me. He just always attracted people and other animals to him.
What are some of your favorite animal fall moments?
Miss you every day, Big Guy. Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Charles is such a silly little man. He has become quite a presence at the Zoo.
Never having had such a small dog before (he is about 15 lbs), I am learning all about demanding balls of fur who think they own you. I won’t say that he totally suffers from Small Dog Syndrome, which is a combination of behaviors from whining and jumping up on people, being a diva, demanding food, but he does take some behaviors to the next level for me. There are things that a small dog does that we would never tolerate in a larger breed, such as the constant food begging. The problem around the Zoo is that Mom (me) is not the only person in the house, which means that the rules are not consistent, especially when it comes to Lil’ man. Everyone thinks he is just so cute, or they want to shut him up, so they slip him food, which only makes it worse.
A good thing with Charles is that he does not want to be carried everywhere like many little dog divas do (thank goodness). He actually is not a lap dog which is why we are his 5th home, because he would bite people. Personally, I think he has arthritis. Previous owners may have picked him up quickly because he is little and people do that and then he would snap at them because it hurts or maybe children played with him to rough, which also hurts.
At the Zoo, we try to respect who they are, not who they are supposed to be. We are still figuring him out, that’s fur sure.

No animals were hurt in the making of this Halloween murder scene.
We have so much fun at Halloween. Maybe because it is just a fun time, no need to cook and bake and worry about family or presents or going to visit people. Here at the zoo, we love the fall and everything that comes with it. Though it is the dying off of the crops and the going to sleep of the plants and the earth, it is a magic time for us. We really enjoy being wrapped in layers and having a crackling fire to warm our bones. Though the cold has started to affect us all, because we are not puppies anymore, it still holds a freshness that makes us feel alive.
Harvest time makes me feel thankful for having food on my table and being able to provide for my family; flesh and fur and fins. Have you heard about the Teal Pumpkin Project? It helps raise awareness for people who have food allergies (like me) so that everyone can partake in Halloween. Have you ever thought about the child with peanut or milk allergies who can’t participate? Please think about having toys or alternative treats. If you want more information about the Teal Pumpkin Project go to FARE – Food Allergy Research & Education. We give out eyeballs and spiders and other fun things in a separate bucket from regular candy. I give the goblins a choice when they come to the door.

We are ready for mischief – Are you?

September seemed like a very Cat month in pictures.
It was very hot most of the month and it was the driest September on record. Seems like Maryland is turning into Florida. Still in the 90’s even now in October. Maybe I will put the dogs in bikinis for Halloween.
Have you picked your costume yet?
