5.13.12 Still Puppies

Puppy Lulu maybe 6 month April 2010

I have been thinking about puppies.  My cuties have grown so fast.  Louise, aka Lulu Belle, was already about 5 months old when she came to us, so I never really got to see her in her littlest puppiness.  She was so cute and loved to sleep under the grapes (now she likes to eat  the stems – yes, I know grapes can be poison to dogs).  It took a while to teach her that people were Ok, but she loved being with us, and especially with the other animals. I decided that her birthday would be Halloween (31 Oct), so she is 2 1/2 years old now.

Puppy Sofie maybe 14 wks March 2011

When Lulu was little, Squash was already blind and an old man.  I never got to meet him as a puppy.  He found us when he was already about 7 or so years old.  I sometimes imagine how cute he must have been.  He was very good with Lil’ Lulu.

After Squash past on, we got Sofie. The rescue thought Sofie Bear was about 12 weeks old and a Shepard/Collie.  Since she really is more like a Sheltie/Corgi, she may have been 14 or 16 weeks:  Who knows?  I made her birthday Thanksgiving time, 25 November.  She is 1 1/2 years old now.  I have not told her that she is not going to be a 100 # dog yet, I figure I will wait until she is older.

The girls are still very much puppies.  Sometimes they remind me of the endless energy I had in my youth,  Sofie still gets these big bags under her eyes at bed time and needs to get ‘Beaver’ and go Nite-nite, almost like a human child.  Never had a puppy like that before.  Louise gets very “Mommy, Mommy” sometimes, and wants all the attention on her.

There is so much to enjoy in our animals.  Of course I wasn’t happy this morning when the cats knocked some laser pointer off the shelf and I found puppy Sofie chewing it with 3 little batteries on the floor next to her.  I freaked out and watch her for hours, hoping I was not to late. I also forgot how much work all these youngsters are (2 puppies, 2 kittens, and 3 old cranky cats – oh I almost forgot and the teenager).

Happy Mother’s Day! Whether human, animal, or even a plant, watching and participating in helping things grow has been my greatest reward.  Thank you for letting me be your mother.

Just another dogdaz morning at the zoo ❤

Giant Ball or Tiny Puppy? You decide

Is This a Tiny Puppy or a Giant Ball?

Scientists at MIT are struggling with an issue of photographic perspective. At first glance, the image above appears to be of a tiny puppy laying next to a tennis ball.

“But what if it’s actually a normal-sized dog laying next to a giant novelty tennis ball?” asks Dr. Norman Friedlander, an aesthetics researcher. He posed this very question to his colleagues, and what was once dismissed as a cute little puppy photo has become a scientific quandary for the ages.

Tip: Air Dry Your Dogs For Fewer Wrinkles

TIP: Air Dry Your Dogs for Fewer Wrinkles

image

Everyone knows dogs can be extremely difficult to dry.  They often come out of the spin cycle totally full of wrinkles, which requires hours of careful steaming.  And who has time for that?   If you want that fresh-pressed look without all the hassle, fashion experts recommend air drying your dogs.

“Not only will they come out wrinkle-free, but air drying is actually fun,” writes fashion blogger Pia Alexander in her upcoming book, “The Debonair Doggie.”  She suggests a quick drive in the country with the windows down.

2.2.12 5:54: Puppies!

hippiesandgypsies:

Nikkolette (look alike from the internet)

Still traveling, so today I thought I would focus on my puppies.  Baby animals are sooooo cute.  Sometimes I wish they would stay little forever.

Nikkolette (aka Nikki), my buff Cocker Spaniel, was 8 weeks old when she came to live with me.  She was the first dog I ever got on my own and the youngest puppy I ever had.  That was a real experience. I learned a lot about dog care and about getting up in the middle of night (I recommend you think twice when you live on the second floor of an apartment building and have to take a puppy out to pee several times a night).  I remember in the middle of one cold New England night, carrying her down the indoor stairs (I think there were about 20 steps to my apartment) and falling down most of them with the puppy in my arms.  Not a scratch on her, but boy did I hurt in the morning.  Ah, puppies.  Nikki was an easy going and sweet dog.  Except for the time that the cats (Alice and Gertrude were kittens then) knocked a plate of brownies off the counter for Nikki to enjoy (and proceed to get sick all over the house) while I was out. In general with Nikki there was very little puppy damage. She shared her life with me until she was 18 years old.

Puppy Lulu

Louise (aka Lulu Belle) was about 5 or 6 months old when she came to me.  I still had to potty train her but she was a fast learner.  She was mistreated in her early days (she had a flea collar embedded in her neck, was covered with dry mange, and was afraid of everything when she was rescued) but she was the cutest thing,  It did not take her long to learn that she was safe here and no one was ever going to mistreat her again. Louise is a really smart dog and I enjoy watching her figure out things.  Her puppy time went quickly and I only lost my favorite boots and a 12 roll case of toilet tissue to her puppiness.  Lulu is 2 1/2 years old now, but in many ways, she still has a lot of puppy in her.
The current puppy, Sofie Bear, turned 1 in November.  We rescued her at about 12 or 14 weeks.  I always wonder why a puppy ends up in a kill shelter, but I guess we will never know.  From the way that Sofie acts, I think she may have run wild until she was brought into the shelter.  If it was up to her she would still run wild today.  Sofie is the most strong willed little bit that has ever come my way.  She loves to carry around my slippers when ever she can and has a real affinity to chewing on things she shouldn’t.

Sofie Day 1

Ah! Puppies…..

Just another DogDaz morning from the road ❤
