1.21.12 7:17: Finding Sofie
After Squash E Bear went to the Big Meadow in the Sky last February, my heart was broken. So, knowing one thing that makes me happy (fuzzy animals), V suggested I maybe bring a new dog into our lives. Now you know that I jumped on that in a second.
Louise was about 1-1/2 years old at the time. Since Lulu was a smart but timid beta female, her trainer recommended that a dumb male would probably be the best match. Immediately I started searching the internet for my next rescue. I wanted a dog about 80 lbs and furry, like Squash was. I spotted this little male fuzzy puppy on PetFinders and contacted the LUCKY DOG Rescue. The Lucky Dog volunteers were all wonderful on the phone, so we were sure we were going to find our next love.
I filled out the application, had the phone interview, and then headed out on Saturday for the hour or so drive to the adoption event which was running from 12 to 2. We got to the town where the event was being held by noon but could not find the location of the store until 1:30. As we finally parked (oh did I tell you it was pouring rain and we had Louise in the car with us), we see a person carrying the little puppy we came to see to their car. Glad he got a nice home, but now we were back to square one.
I never saw as many dogs as there were at this adoption event. There must have been over 200 beauties at this event. Leaving Louise in the car, we went in and started to meet all the doggies. Well, way in the back of the store, in a portable pen, were the puppies. And, of course, pleading to get picked up and played with….. you got it…. Penny (who is now Sofie Bear).
The pictures above are of Sofie in her PetFinder ad. She was soooo cute. They thought she was a 12 week old Shepard/Collie mix and would probably grow to be about 70 lbs. I know, they told me to get a boy, but could you not fall in love with that face. I brought Louise in to meet some of the older dogs, but she really gets stressed in this type of environment, so it really did not work for her, or me. Sofie was to young (pre-shots) for them to meet. The next week a Lucky Dog volunteer came and did the home visit, I talked to the foster, and on March 9 met him at his work place to pick up SOFIE BEAR.
Little did I know then that I would end up with a Corgi/Sheltie (maybe) who weighs in at about 36 lbs with the attitude of a Mastiff.
I brought her home in a plastic tub because hadn’t bought a crate for her yet because it happened so fast.

I can not find the author of this piece but it looks like so much fun that I wanted to share it. How different my life would be if I lived like someone left the gate open. My initial thought is, “Wow, that would be so cool!” To run wild and do what ever you want. But then the grown up responsible me steps in. ‘The reason I have the gates are to keep the animals safe. I don’t think it is safe to leave the gate open (I’m sure I am missing the point?). My job is to keep the dogs from the world of cars and foxes that could hurt or even kill them. Does the picture mean live your life with abandon? With no worries? I think dogs live their lives in the moment. Around here, that moment is almost always safe and secure. I love to watch Louise run laps around the property as fast as she can – Zoom zoom Zoom. When you have a fearful dog like Lulu, to see her fully engaged in something that gives her pure joy, like her running at full hound speed, is just such pleasure to watch. When I open the back door and release the dogs, zoom, they both run with such zeal across the yard to catch whatever squirrel made the mistake of being on the ground at that time. Maybe the quote should say “Live… like someone made sure the gate was closed.” Just another DogDay morning at my house. ❤
