5.30.13 Thankful Thursday: New Life

This week we are thankful for our new grand niece, Sydney Alexa.  Though she is far away, and not a puppy or kitten, we really like her all the same. Sydney was a month early, but is doing great.  Welcome to the family.

9.13.13 Sofie Wants A Party Too

Sofie’s Rescue
Ride Home
March 2011

Sofie got jealous because yesterday I talked about how much I love Louise, and that I was planning a party for her 3rd birthday next month which is on Halloween (October 31).

“Hello new Mommy,
Can I come out of this cage now?”

OK Sofie, now Mommy will show off her little bitty baby,  It was not that long ago that you actually came to live with us.  March 2011. I did not have a car crate, so I brought you home in a large plastic tub (see picture).  Since you are a rescue, and they thought you were going to be this big collie/shepard dog, they figured you were younger, based on your size (maybe 12 weeks).  But now that I know you are more like a sheltie/corgie thing, you must have been older and I decided that your birthday would be around Thanksgiving;  we will celebrate it on November 25.  I will throw you a little party just like Lulu’s, but since all the kids will be home from college, you will have an extra special time.  You know who (Peanut, the little human) will let you in her room and up on the bed, if you want to go, and also the bigger little human (K8) will be here to give you extra treats and let you out back a lot.  You will have to wait your turn though, Sofie Bear.   I know it is not easy because I was the youngest and had to wait a lot for the older ones who always seemed to get all the good things and all the attention.  But your day will come.  You are my ‘Little Bit,’ and Mommy adores your cute little whiney self.  You are a sweet silly little girl with mischief on your mind.  Your day will come, hang in there.  But first you can help me plan Lulu Belle’s party.

9.5.12 Buddliea and Butterflies

I can not help myself. Right now, there are so many beautiful butterflies in the garden that they are overwhelming me. Yellow Swallowtail, 2 kinds of black, some orange Monarchs, and a new one today – a Variegated Fritillary.  We have lots of brown skippers and white cabbage moths too.  They come right up and land on everything.  They dance in groups and in pairs.  It is like an amazing choreography of life – just for us.  So, I had to take a short video with my silly smartphone to share with you, so that you might catch a glimpse of the incredible dance along with me.  The butterflies entertain us for hours.  We have planted for many years to maximize the butterflies and birds in the garden.  The pool is surrounded by Buddleia, also known as ‘Butterfly Bush.’  We have a red, white, pink, light purple, and black night purple.  Our grove blooms all summer, so it is nonstop color and show.  These deciduous shrubs are so easy to grow and always have a wonderful fragrance and a swarm of butterflies around them.  The elongated flowers grow in clusters on arching branches that can get maybe 10 or 12 feet high (unless you cut them back – which is a good idea or they get leggy).  I like the willow-like foliage that is a grayish green color and is pretty dense.  The white Buddleia was here when we moved in (she must be at least 15 years old telling by her main stalk) and we have added 5 colors around her.

A new visitor today, just for you – Variegated Fritillary.

Make sure to tap this picture once with your pointer, so that you can get a close up and see his incredible colors. This is one of our Black Swallowtails.

Do you bring any interesting insects or creatures to your garden?  Do you plant for anyone special (besides yourself and dogs and cats of course)?  Yes, I do grow catnip.

I enter this day knowing that I did everything I could to love, teach and mentor a worldly aware citizen of the universe.  Now it is up to her and to the ‘Great Powers’ to protect her and guide her on the next part of the journey.  She told me I am not allowed to cry.  I am not sure I can do that.

7.8.12 Antipodes

I have this hole to China theory that I brought up in yesterday’s blog and wanted to explore. As you can see from Louise’s photo, I caught her digging (notice the lovely line of dirt on her muzzle). My mother always said that if I keep digging in the yard, I would get to China – and when you are little, you do not question your Mother’s logic. But now I am big, and Mommy is not here to defend her 1950’s logic, so, where do you end up if you dig a hole through the earth’s core and come out the other side from Maryland, USA.  Well, for me, it would be in the middle of the India Ocean it appears.  You would need to be in Argentina or Chile to dig to China.  Wikipedia has this great page on Anitpodes, basically the opposite sides of the globe.  I never gave it much thought until today.  So, Louise and Sofie, as you dig your holes, just be aware, that you are not going to get to where you think.  But you may get cooler in this heat when you dig your shallow pits and lie in them.

Try this really neat site to find your location’s opposite: If you dig straight down

7.6.12 Peanut is 18 today!

My human baby is 18 today.  It makes me reflect on so many things.  On all the wonderful years that I have had being her Mom and watching her turn into this incredible young person that is about to go off and take on the world.  The greatest gift I ever received from the universe was my daughter.  She is my only child, so I can not say what it would be like to have more than one.  Though I tried.  But the universe told me that this one was enough.  I have step kids who really are great, but they do not consider me their mother (and I am not), so it is different.

When you are an adult you live your life based on years of decisions about your values and what is important to you.  As you raise your children you pass on these things, but they receive them in their own way, and as part of their growing vs as something they decide when they get older.  My daughter is a vegan, Peta, don’t kill anything, recycle everything, and save the world, kind of girl.  She is going to major in ‘creating world peace’ and wants to go fix all the wars and the hate.  She would like to intern for Greenpeace to save the whales, after she is done at the United Nations saving the humans.

All I can say is, YOU LEARN WHAT YOU LIVE.  When you grow up surrounded by love and faith and service and furry animals, no matter what you do once you leave home, that will always be the base of who you are.

Happy 18th Birthday Peanut.  Spread your wings and fly to the moon and back.  Your Mother will always be right here standing behind you (just remember to call sometimes – LOL).
