9.16.12 Inspiring Blog Award

How nice to receive an “Inspiring Blog Award,” from David Kanigan of Lead,Learn.Live  Thank you very much, you David are the one that is inspirational.  David says that by blogging he is trying to “share some of these “ah-ha” moments or inspirations that make him wonder, make him laugh or bring tears to his eyes.” Thanks for finding what we do here at DogDaz inspirational, because we get a lot from you too.

Awards are wonderful surprises.  Along with many of them come some rules, so here they are and here are my answers:

(1) Link back to the person who nominated you: DONE above

(2) Post the award image to your page: DONE on right

(3) Tell seven facts about yourself: DONE below

Fact 1:  I am gluten, dairy, and red meat free (I eat poultry and fish), but my animals are not.

Fact 2:  Even when I clean my office, it is always a mess.

Fact 3:  I have collected elephant paraphernalia since I was 4 and I never cared if the trunk was up or down.

Fact 4:  If the family did not stop me I probably would have several more dogs.

Fact 5:  When I was younger I dreamed of breeding a wolf/malamute hybrid and training them to be child protection dogs when children were out in the yard playing, so that no one would steal them.  Weird huh?

Fact 6:  Blogging has taken over as my number 2 hobby, next to the animals (but are they really a hobby?)

Fact 7:  Sometimes I just can’t think of what to write, but then I do, and it all works out in the end.

(4) Nominate 5-10 other blogs,  DONE below and, as always, I try to find new blogs that I have not awarded something to before, so here they are:

1.  Georgia About

2. Expressions in a Tcup

3.  PetSign_cri

4.  One Thousand Single Days

5. Living and Loving

(5) Let them know they are nominated. PINGBACK – you’re notified.  No really I will comment on their sites.  LOL

9.10.12 You Can’t See Me

Noel likes to hide on the kitchen bench when it is pushed under the table.  I believe she thinks that no one knows she is there.  Sometimes I actually do pull the bench out and end up sitting on her because I don’t realize she is there, startling us both.  I noticed over the years that animals think if they can not see us, then they must be hidden.  Squash used to hide his big head under my chair at the vet’s office, with 90% of his body of course not under the chair, and think he was safe from view.  Not really knowing what they are thinking, I am making a very large assumption here that they think they are totally hidden.  Do they not know that they are exposed?  How would animals survive in the wild if they do not realize that to hide, one must make sure that all of you, not just part of you, is hidden?  Maybe this is a domestic animal thing?  I have observed very young children do the same thing when playing hide and seek; they leave part of themselves exposed.

Cats love to hide.  Around here they even like to play hide and seek (try it: they love to jump out at you when found).  My cats hide for many reasons, but mostly it is to minimize the threat of danger in their environment so that they can relax.  My cats definitely hide when they are stressed and it is really hard to get a hiding cat in that situation to come out.  Around my zoo you find cats hiding on pushed-in seats (a favorite of Noel’s), under tables (especially Miss Kitty), in closets (Stella and Nine are having fun with this one), under blankets (a favorite of Kitty and Nine), and in the smallest box or bag they can find.  Muffin, doesn’t hide that I can think of (maybe because he is Alpha and feels no need to).

I still don’t understand about this partially hidden thing though?  Don’t they always know where their tails are?  Or maybe Noel is not really hiding at all?

Before we leave the house for any length of time we always count animals to make sure everyone is inside and not locked in a room they should not be in or anything like that.  I know where to find most of my furries because they have regular hiding places.  Where do your pets like to hide?  And do they do this half-hide thing?

9.9.12 Snack Time at the Zoo

Note to my Readers:  Sorry for the rant, but sometimes, I just have to get it off my chest.

Sometimes when I look down and realize that we currently have 5 cats, I worry that I am someday going to be called the crazy rescue lady.  I wish I could say that everyone gets along, but lately, with Muffin really getting on in years, and Kitty, losing her mind and peeing everywhere, the multi-cat (multi-animal) household, is not working as calmly as it used to.  Over the last 30 year I have always had multiple cats: it went from Rosie & Eddy, add Babydoll & Wussy, subtract Eddy (breast cancer), subtract Wussy (kidney), add Alice & Gertrude, subtract Babydoll (cancer), subtract Rosie (old age), add The Muffin Man, Zackary, & Cuddles, subtract Alice (kidney), subtract Gertrude (old age), subtract Zackary (kidney), add Nine & Stella, subtract Cuddles (brain tumor), and here we are. And then the dogs went from Nikki, add Squash, lose Nikki, add Louise, lose Squash, add Sofie.

With 7 animals, someone is always crying that they are hungry and because Muffin wants to eat all the time (he is down to about 3 or 4 lbs), we feed the cats pretty often.   The cost to keep the zoo in dog and cat food is killing me!  We just switched the cats to 1/2 commercial brand (9 Lives at $.43 per can) because the good stuff (Wellness $1.65 per can) is so expensive.  I am switching the dogs to something different too, but it is harder for them (they are more tummy sensitive).  Currently I am moving them from Prescription Hills ID to VeRUS, Lamb and Brown Rice (not cheaper but maybe I will use less in the long run). You almost need a Ph.D. in animal science to figure out the best animal foods at this point, and when you do, you can’t afford them. Oh my!

I will need to take a loan out of the bank to keep up with the 7 animal’s appetites at this point.  Whose idea was all these animals anyway?  Good thing that I don’t eat much (but how come they always want whatever I am eating too?).

Oh, don’t get me started on the cost of dog treats these days…….

8.22.12 Mourning Forward

I know it happens but I am not exactly sure why, but when cats get old, like really old, like 18 to 20, they waste away it seems.  Muffin must be down to 5 lbs (2.2 kg) now, if that.  I don’t like it.  He was the king.  The big Kahuna around here.  He was the Alpha and kept everyone, even the humans and the dogs in line.

The Muffin Man has become a little wisp of himself, and his front paws seem to have splayed out in a funny way that I never noticed before today.  He is always hungry (especially at 4 AM) but never seems to eat much.  He attacks everyone’s dinner and only wants people or dog food.  “What ever you want, Muffy, we will get it for you.”  Some nights he does not even come to my bed anymore.  I think he starts to, but get tired on way so stops and just sleeps where he is.

It is hard when your furry friends get so advanced in years.  Everyday I check his breathing and kiss him and thank him for the one more day he has given me with him.  Muffy’s time is coming – maybe tomorrow – next week – next month – one can not prepare – one can not ready themselves for the hole – the loss – the empty space on the couch.  All I can do is try and cuddle his boney self and enjoy the moments of now.  The togetherness of the present.

I am not sure if this blog is about Muffy or about my daughter, Peanut, leaving to college at the end of the week:  difference is, she has her life ahead, he has his life behind.  I am already missing them both in a weird way and they are not even gone yet.

8.9.12 Nine’s Adventure

Let me start by saying, he is fine.   But I am very upset by the whole thing.  OK, I will start from the beginning.  Today was just one of those days that went from bad to worse.  I am not going to get into all the human stuff that created a really bad day, but there is one piece that I will tell you.  Friday, the Pest Control guy was suppose to come to do his yearly termite inspection but he never showed up.  Today he was suppose to come at 3 pm and he showed up at 9 am. I hate when people do that, and if I did not have to have this inspection as part of my contract, I would have told him to go away until another day.  Anyway, the same guy has been coming for years.  He is a strange older dude and rambles on and on, and does not watch what he is doing (or where he tries to put his hands – but that is for a different blog). To do this inspection he mainly checks the garage and the outside of the house.  When we went from the house to the garage, I told him to shut the door behind him, but I saw that he did not, so I came back and closed it.  Around 9:30 am he finished his inspection after much to much chatter, yada yada yada, and then he went.  I went back to work and at 11:00 am I got the dogs ready for their walk with Mojo. When I opened the front door, who is on the front steps but Nine!  I never knew he was out and I never saw him exit.  It was really hot out and he was panting terribly.  On top of that, Mojo hates cats, so I was really worried that they were going to be rounding the corner any minute and all 90 lbs of Lab would see 9 lb Nine and go after him.  I approached Nine cautiously but he ran (which I did not expect).  Nine jumped the fence (it was a really nice jump actually) and scrambled into my back yard.  I called Peanut and together we were finally able to wrangle him and get him in the house (before Mojo arrived or any other disasters befell him (like meeting a fox)).  All the other animals in the zoo were very concerned about him and gathered around; they even let him eat a snack without trying to steal it from him (which is unheard of with this group).  Panting cats are a very bad sign and he had me very scared for a few minutes.  Ice cubes and paw washing cooled him down pretty quick and then he slept for the afternoon.  You would think that taught him a lesson but noooooooo!!!!  Not Nine the Adventurer.  Whenever I am at the door now, guess who is trying to have another adventure.

8.4.12 Noel Took Charge

Noel In Charge

The trouble with leaving Noel in charge of the zoo while I was gone, is that she actually took it very seriously.  Here you see her taking over the dog bed in my office and forcing poor Louise to sleep on the floor.  That is the trouble with animals of different species.  They seem to boss each other around in funny ways.  What I found really cute is that Louise actually listened to her and vacated the bed.  Maybe it is an age before beauty thing; Lulu being the younger animal of course.   I think that in my absence Noel was forced to deal with situations that she did not prefer; like having to be with people other than Mommy and actually being with the rest of the herd/pride.  I noticed that she has been out more the last couple of days since I have been home.  She was investigating ‘Syd,’ the platypus that I brought home from the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, for Peanut.  Funny what happens to certain animals when you give then a sense of responsibility.

Maybe Noel will start being more social with the other animals now that she has been in the leadership role.  I doubt it though.  I do find it interesting that the dogs allowed Noel to be in their bed when they do not allow any other cats to even come close.  They are really possessive about their spots usually.  I have seen Sofie get extremely upset at Nine for trying to enter her kennel (she probably was protecting her lovey, Beaver, who was sleeping inside).  The dynamics of my pack/pride are very interesting.  When you change one thing, take out a member or add a member, even for a short time, the relationships seem to shift.  Sometimes they come back to where they started, and sometimes, they don’t.  I really hope the dogs don’t start standing on my desk and sleeping in Noel’s bed under the window.  I don’t think I could deal with that.

5.11.12 “Who Me?”

Nine has decided that since the dogs get to go in the back yard out the sliding door, he should be able to follow.  So he hides behind the TV that is next to the slider and waits for the moment when someone opens the door and maybe does not see him escape.  When he gets caught trying to sneak out he gives me that “Who me?” look.  You know the one; when your animal has done something but they think the stupid human would never catch on to the game that they are trying to play on you.  “I’m so cute, I would never try something like that Mom.”  Poor Nine, life is just so hard when you have to follow the rules.

5.9.12 Be Kind To Your Office Staff

Noel spends a significant part of her life on my desk, in her pink bed under the window.  She is almost always with me (except now for some strange reason).  She and Muffin used to both sleep on the desk, but he has taken to sleeping in the living room on the couch ever since the winter (I assume because it is warmer).  Noel likes to help me type (you have seen many of her blogs if you follow the zoo).  Today, Muffy actually walked on my laptop and shut it down in the middle of a business meeting where I was instant messaging with someone.  “Oh excuse me Mr. Big Business person, my cat just walked on my computer and that is why I told you to asdjfhajksdfhdfkashdfkasjdkfa and then I disappeared.”  I am sure that will go over well at Head Quarters.  Speaking of that however, there does not seem to be a conference call or business meeting that I attend, anywhere in the world, that there is not a dog barking, or a baby crying.  I used to think my dog Nikki’s bark was connected to the mute button of my phone.  Really!  I would take it off mute, she would bark, on mute, she was quiet.  I am not lying, I tested it.  When I tell people I work from home and have 7 animals they look at me like I am crazy, but I just tell people I have the most loving and cuddly office staff, and I would not trade them for anything in the world.  Believe me, I never eat lunch alone.
