In 2010, Louise was about 13 months in this picture, she helped us with our first little holiday tree. Once the kids were bigger, they didn’t care as much about decorating the tree (which used to be a very big deal, so much so, that we had to have 2 big trees so that everyone could have every decoration on them), which freed us to start getting ‘Charlie Brown’ trees – little and cute.Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤

Sofie sometimes decides that she would rather lie down under the front tree in a pile of leaves then come in the house with the rest of us. Who could blame her? Squash E Bear used to do the same thing. There is something about a good pile of leaves that just makes you want to lie down.

Some dog(s) must have left a very loud message on the swing set down by the river. I am always in awe of the dogs’ incredible noses. Especially, when you have a hound, like Louise. Her nose is never far from the ground tracking something. I call her a ‘Hoover,’ (like the vacuum cleaner). …They possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us. And the part of a dog’s brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is, proportionally speaking, 40 times greater than ours.(NOVA – Dogs Sense of Smell)Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤
Getting this trio’s attention is easiest when there are high-value treats involved. My go-to treat is a training bit made of liver or beef. It makes my hands stink (which grosses me out because I don’t eat meat), but the doggies will do almost anything for them. I like freeze dried training treats made from a single ingredient only. They don’t bother Louise with her sensitive tummy nor Sofie’s allergies and they are only 6 calories for Charlie’s waistline.

I am happy that the days and nights have turned cooler. I get hot hot hot in the summer. I’m very happy when the winds change and everything cools off. Mom likes fall too, but she is no longer a fan of cold winter. It hurts her bones. If it would stay fall temperature it would be great, but we heard that big storms are coming this winter. Better get those shovels and the generator ready, Mom. Could you lose little Charles this year in a snow pile? Please, Mom. Other than our own fenced yard, there are not many places that we can run off leash. There are always so many people around and other dogs that Mom is afraid that we, or she, will get into trouble. Mom takes us down to the very end of the peninsula, we live between 2 creeks off the Magothy River, where she feels comfortable with our antics. If there are no people or animals around then she lets us go because we are locked in on 2 sides by water and the 3rd side by her. This is our favorite free run place because we can chase ducks and geese and cranes and cormorant and still not get in trouble. Once Sofie jumped into the water and Mom had to go in after her, but that doesn’t happen much. Sofie is too short and heavy to pull herself up the bulkhead and Louise hates water. Mom doesn’t let Charles run free here though because she worries that (1) he would drown if he fell in, (2) the Osprey would pick him up quickly, and (3) we would roll him down the grass and throw him in the water.Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤
