DogDaz Zoo: 8 Constipation Remedies for Dogs

One of my coworker’s dog just had surgery for his other ACL (he is doing fine), but she told me that the dog is crated and on meds and is having trouble going potty. Of course the first thing that comes to my mind is PUMPKIN. This made me realize that maybe I should share with all my readers the remedies that I have used over the years. Since Louise has colitis, she goes back and forth with the consistency of her bowel movements. I find that pumpkin actually can work both ways, help them go, or go less. Here is my list of remedies for constipation. Add any ones you can think of into the comments.

1. Pumpkin: I feed the dogs pumpkin regularly. A tablespoon in their food is all they need. Make sure to use 100% pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix (which contains a whole bunch other stuff especially sugar). When I make dog food, pumpkin is a main ingredient,

2. FiberSupplements: For regularity (we do this for the cats), add fiber, like Metamucil, to their water. There are many over the counter fiber supplements that could work. Check with your vet to see what she recommends and also for how much per pound of the animal.

3. Bran: You can try any kind of bran: rice, oat, wheat. This is one one of the most common remedies for animals and humans when it comes to constipation. I used to give my dogs wheat bran but I soaked it in chicken broth first, so that it was more easily digested and flavorful. Again, ask your vet how much bran per pound of dog.

4. Browm Rice: Did you know that brown rice is much more beneficial than white rice when it comes to fiber? You can sprinkle some on top of your dogs food with each meal.

5. Vegetables and Fruits: When not giving the dogs pumpkin with there meal, I give them either green beans, carrots, or peas. I buy the NO SALT cans (sodium is really bad for dogs) and wash the veggies well. This is just another source of fiber to keep it all pushing along. Louise doesn’t like fruit at all but Sofie loves cantaloupe. I know people whose dogs love apples. (Just make sure to remove the core and the seeds, because the seeds contain bits of cyanide which can be toxic.). Also try unsweetened apple sauce; Mojo and Zelda’s Mom freezes the little apple sauce cups and gives them as an alternative to Frostypaws.

6. Mineral oil: Mineral oil can get things moving but don’t give it directly. Make sure you put it in food. I give 1 tsp for 10 pounds of dog weight, but check with your vet.

7. Exercise: There is nothing like getting the blood flowing through exercise to help move things along. Take Fido for an extra long walk if you can.

8. Laxatives, Milk of Magnesia, or other medications: Some vets may advise a mild laxative or other medications. If it gets to this point, listen to the doctor.

Black and White Sunday: Falling for Squash

fall-07-squash-2

Squash E Bear, I know you understand, wherever you are, how much we miss you. Fall was your season. Your coat would get so full and fluffy. How you loved to put your nose high in the air and sniff the change in the wind. It is like yesterday you would crunch through the leaves and make a nest. Six falls have past already without you and yet, I see you still under the big tree, watching for a rabbit or a squirrel to come into the yard. Fall was always our time big guy. Hope they have leaf piles over the rainbow.

Caturday: Snuggle Down with the Dog

11-19-16

You need to understand that Noel is not a real fan of the dogs. All of a sudden she has decided that she will cross the great divide of the living room, leaving her safe, dog gated out dining room, and sit on Sofie’s pillow. The amazing thing is she snuggled down while Louise was fast asleep right next to her. We were amazed. At first I thought she was going over there to cause trouble (like pee on the pillow or something), but, she sniffed and turn around and sat down. Sofie was not happy, came right over and started nibbling on the end of her pillow (basically freaking out that someone would dare take her spot though she rarely sits on her pillow these days), but NoNo did not flinch. Sofie left and Noel and Louise stayed together for a long time that night. Never underestimate the Zoo, that is fursure!

P.S. Yesterday I found her sleeping on Lulu’s brown pillow, but Lu didn’t know, so all was fine.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Monday Mischief: GET IT OFF!

mm-11-14-16

Mom just thought the new coats with hoods were the coolest things and would keep us dry. I HATE IT! I refused to walk one step until she clipped my leash on in the normal way and got that stuff off my ears. Louise was OK with it – she does not like to get her head wet. Maybe in a really bad rain I will change my mind, but Mom needs to understand that my ears are sacred and should never be covered. HEAR THAT MOM! You need to get me a coat that covers my underside and my legs so that my feathers stay dry. Now that I could go for… maybe. – Sofie Bear

Caturday: Wind in the Maple

11-12-16

Noel was mesmerized by the leaves blowing in the blustery wind the other day. I have never seen her do this before. She was transfixed and then tried to catch them as they hit the glass. She ended up knocking over most of V’s little solar toys (yes, they dance on sunny days and drive me crazy with there clickity clack that I can hear all the way from my office). Noel doesn’t seem to mind the toys, but she sure wants to catch those leaves.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

DogDaz Zoo: Thank You To Our Veterans

On this, our American Veterans day, I wanted to honor the Military Working Dogs, and of course all the active service people and veterans that have protected me and my family and my nation for many years. Especially remembering my Dad who served honorably in the Army during WWII, and took a bullet so that I could be free to be me; my Uncles, my Mother’s 4 brothers, all who fought and came home to their single/widowed mom; and my brother-in-law, who saw the worst of Vietnam, and still remains a wonderful gentle man.

Thank you very much. You will never be forgotten.

Monday Mischief: Our New Dog Walker

 mm11-7-16

We have a new dog walker. Her name is Amanda and her service is called Synergy Pets. Rachel, from Simplifido, moved away and now Amanda is our new friend. I have not figured out that she is actually the dog walker, so I go with her. Remember, about a year ago, I stopped walking with Rachel. No matter what she did, I would not budge. But so far, Amanda seems to know how to get me up and walking. I don’t want Louise to have all the fun; until it starts raining, or snowing, or the wind is blowing too hard, or something scares me…. you know what I mean. – Sofie Bear

Photos by Amanda to Mom at work to show her that I actually went for a walk.
