5.4.12 Chasing Tree Rats

I am mad at Louise for taking off after a squirrel when we were at the house front steps and then she disappeared into the neighbors yard.  I put Sofie in the house and got a lead and went out calling her. I guess there is not much you can do when a Hound/Lab sees or smells a varmint, but I just don’t like it.  She fools me because she can be walking with me off lead, so nice and calm and then zoooooooooom – there she goes.  Well that is just not safe, and not right, and I just don’t like it.  So I am mad at you Louise.  I try and try and try but the clicker and the treats are no match for a smelly, peanut eating, tree rat.

5.3.12 Waiting for Bo-Bo

I wonder sometimes, when the dogs are sitting staring at a toy like Bo-Bo, what they are actually thinking.  Is Sofie waiting for Bo-Bo to get up and walk away?  Is she hoping that Louise will take it and then she could chase her around the house?  Is she really hoping, deep down, that a cat will walk within 2 feet of Bo-Bo, thus giving her an excuse to chase said cat down the hall (which is totally against house rules)?  Or, is it just that she is so in love with Bo-Bo that she can not take her eyes off of him?  Ah… the inner workings of a dog’s mind.  Got to love it.

5.1.12 Spring Has Sprung!

We are trying to determine where to place the National Wildlife Federation‘s Certified Wildlife Habitat Plaque we received last winter for the property.  The dogs are very proud to be part of the environmentally sensitive landscaping and help by digging strategic holes in certain critical areas and especially keeping the gardens clear of moles, voles, and bunnies (you know I am kidding about the proud part, right).  The first grapes of the year are starting to bud, and if you look carefully you can see tiny tiny little grapes on the vine.  Sofie and Lulu especially like to chew on the grape stalks (yum… tasty).  We just got 2 new rain barrels to try and hold back some of the erosion that is going on from years of drought.  We are losing so much top soil and everything is just turning to sand (which Sofie really likes, because to her, it is one big sand box).  I love the yard in spring.  This morning we sat and watched some new orange and brown butterflies (I need to get the book out to see what kind they are) suckling on the azaleas.

And the ducks are back quacking their heads off and walking all over the pool cover.  They make Lulu and Sofie crazy because the pool area is fenced off and the dogs can’t run at the ducks to chase them away.

Spring has come to the Mid-Atlantic.

4.30.12 Headshots

I’ve noticed that the dogs like to lie really close when they are together on the dog bed in my office.  Sometimes so close that Louise lies on top of Sofie’s head.  Trying to get a good picture when you have a dark furred dog and a light furred dog together is definitely a challenge (especially with a phone camera). I like that the dogs are so comfortable with each other that they can actually be this close.  It always makes me laugh though that when one wakes up, whomever that is will start to nibble on the other one’s face, and then it turns into a rolling match and there goes the peaceful moment.  I like shooting  headshots of my animals even though they are hard to get. I think there is something about capturing the mouth and the eyes that is just so interesting.

Now that I think of it, when I look at my office wall it contains every school picture (headshot) ever taken of my kid in a age chronicle series (all in the same black frames).  I guess I have always liked headshots.  Do you have a favorite pose or shot?

4.23.12 What’s Your Perspective?

Perspective is very important.  How you see things, how you view your world.  I notice that the animals like to look at the world right side up, up side down, and sometimes, even sideways. I notice that when I am trying to see something differently, I squint my eyes, and it helps me get a clearer view.  I like to get down on a child (or animal) level so I can see things from their perspective.  When is the last time you laid in the grass and looked up at the world?  Changing how I view things, sitting in a different spot then usual, stopping at the top of the stairs and looking up instead of down, all help me reboot how I see things.  Personally, I like a new view every once in a while.

4.22.12 Ears :-(

imageLouise’s ear infection is back with a vengeance. I feel so bad for her because she tries to scratch her head off. We went to see Dr. Kate to find out what we need to do THIS time. Three different ear drops later, we are starting back on the 2X a day treatment. She is such a good girl and though she hates having me clean her ears, she rolls on her back and lets me do what I have to. Well, this spring is sure starting hard for my babies but they still want to play outside and enjoy eating the fresh sweet grass of spring.

4.16.12 Bait and Switch?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Louise really likes this yellow toy that she has.  It is supposed to be one of those indestructible 2 dog pull things.  Anyway, Sofie (who figures out how to eat the strategic stitching on any toy), has weakened the middle so now it is nice and foldable (is that a word?).  Lulu decided to take a nice nap on the yellow toy and use it as a pillow.  I thought it was cute, so I took a picture. The funny thing is, the next time I looked down, Louise had magically turned into Miss Constance Kitty, and Kitty was asleep in the same place Lulu just was,
