Wonderful Wednesday: What Happened to Nine

About a week after I was home from the hospital for my back surgery, Nine started to sneeze, a lot. Then a few days later he started throwing up and stopped eating. Then he started throwing up just bile because he had nothing in his stomach (at least that is what we figured). We monitored his output and we were not seeing much (with many animals in the house, though it may sound weird, we know the box habits of each – some cover, some don’t, some use the side – Catpeople know what I am talking about.) Something was not right and we were worried. He was sleeping more than usual and we hoped that it would pass.

Days went by and he was not eating and the gagging continued. He looked dehydrated and failed my pinch test. I tried to get him an appointment at the Vet (it was Friday) but both my vets (our dogs and cats have different ones, don’t ask) were booked until next week. On Saturday, we were getting overly concerned (it has been over a week), so we decided to take him to Vet Emergency (thank goodness for them). What if something was blocking his stomach? What if he was dehydrated and we could not help him? What if…. I researched cat flu, viruses, everything I could. A big fear of mine is that whatever it is will pass on to all the other animals.

Nine must have overheard me making the appointment at Vet Emergency because he totally disappeared. We assume it was into the rafters of the basement (he does like to hide up there). We could not find him for hours. Remember now that I just had triple disc back surgery, so I was of very little help to V around all this because I could not bend, lift, or twist. I called Vet Emergency back and told them that as soon as he reappears we will get him there (it was now late Saturday afternoon).

Finally, he reappeared and we were able to scoop him into the carrier, and off we went to Vet Emergency. Being that it is COVID time, of course, we could not go into the appointment with him, but they make sure to let us know that it would cost lots of $$$$ and they asked if we were ok with a minimum of $XXX before they did anything. What could we do? We said “sure.”

We waited and waited and waited, and then the Vet called and said they did not see any problem upon examination and could they take x-rays, and other things, and of course, you know what we said, “Please find out what is wrong with him.”

We waited and waited and waited, and the Vet called and said they did not know what the problem was but they would send him home with an expensive appetite enhancer and see if that worked. Or we could bring him back on Monday for a $900 test if he was not improving.

5 hours later we all came home (I was not supposed to be sitting in a car that long right after surgery but I forgot that until I tried to walk, the things we do for our loves). Nine went back to his bed and we just shook our heads and wondered what we just put him and ourselves through to have no answers.

Over the next 48 hours, he continued to be sick, not eating, not outputting. Nothing appeared to change. So finally, I gave him this appetite enhancer. Later that nite he was a little hungry, so we started to give him some wet food, then some dry food, then anything he wanted. I gave him the appetite enhancer again the next day. It took a few days, then he appeared to be his old self again. Actually, worse, he is beating everyone up, and being the very spring has sprung Tomcat, running the house and everyone in it.

We will never know what the cause of his illness is or was, but for now, all is well.

Nine – Hitting the camera because he wants more food

P.S. When I had cataract surgery a few years ago, Nine decided to run out the door and get lost for a few days. He always seems to do something when I am at my weakest. Thanks, Nine.

Monday Mischief: World Water Day

Today is World Water Day! We could not exist without water. I think it is amazing how much we take water for granted. My river, the Magothy, which is a sub-estuary of the Chesapeake Bay, struggles environmentally. It is improving a little with the help of many environmental actions but still way below an acceptable level to sustain healthy wildlife, fish, and people. I stopped letting the dogs in the water years ago when several dogs died from eating dark false mussels and also as people and animals were starting to get the vibro virus (a really bad thing) from swimming in the water. We still go down to the river and run along the shoreline, though I am very careful that the dogs don’t eat anything. We really need to take better care of our waters. Scary thoughts for a mischief Monday, sorry.

What kind of mischief did you get into today?

Wonderful Wednesday: Noel Turns 14

At 14 years young, Noel is doing fantastic as the Queen of the Zoo. She mostly naps, as always, but has really found her rhythm between Mom’s bed and the herb window, and occasionally a chair, couch, or dog bed.

It is hard to believe from this very sickly kitten with Feline herpes, who had to be held and medicated and hand-fed for months, she has turned into this silly, happy, matriarch of the DogDaz_Cats2 Zoo.

Happy 14th Noel. We love you!

Monday Mischief: And Then She Was Home

Mom went into a very scary place with lots of Doctors and Nurses and was gone for what seemed like forever so that they could fix her back. 57 staples later she came home with a walker and cane and medicine and we needed to take care of her day and night while she learned how to not hurt so much.

Nurse Noel stayed by her side in bed all the time and sometimes she wasn’t so nice because she would make Mom get up and walk into other rooms or even feed her. Mostly, Noel lives on Mom’s bed anyway, so it wasn’t a big stretch for Noel, but it was nice for Mom to have a bed buddy.

Mini really liked that Mom was in bed too, so she and Noel made the decision to sit on Mom as much as possible and make it as hard as possible for her to change positions. Mom is doing much better now (6 weeks since surgery) and she is even picking up Mini (though she is not supposed to).

Nine, well he is a whole nother story that Mom will have to tell you. He wasn’t happy that she was no feeling well, so he decided to get sick too. But that is for another blog.

I would say that we cats did a really good job of taking care of her. No matter how sick a human is, they always need a cat.

What kind of mischief did you get into today?

Caturday: So Much Has Happened

We know that it has been many many weeks since Mom has posted any news from the Zoo. But, she thinks that it is time to start up again since the big dogs came back from vacation yesterday and she is sitting more at the computer again.

It was so nice not having the big dogs around, barking, and chasing, and doing all those dog things. Charles, the little dog, was still here during Mom’s recovery (which is still going on) and he has started to act like a real bossy boss, so we are hoping that the big dogs put him back in his little dog place and that he stops trying to manage us.

We mostly had Mom, and her bed, all to ourselves. Now that the big dogs are back we hope that doesn’t change because we really enjoy the comfy comforter, and nibbling on Mom’s hair while she sleeps.

Mom has a lot of stories to tell about things that have happened at the zoo over the last several weeks, but, just like her recovery from back surgery, they will take time. We are glad that we can be of service keeping her amused, cuddled, and always well-loved.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Wonderful Wednesday: See You Soon

Mom is going to have major back surgery next week and she will be literally, laid up, for a while. Louise and Sofie are going to have a little winter vacation with Sonya, the dog whisperer, for a few weeks while she is recuperating. Mom is not sure when she will be able to start walking long distances again, or when she can take a chance with 55 and 70 lbs dogs pulling her on the end of the leads.

Charlie and the cats will keep her warm until the big dogs return. Hopefully, it all goes well and she will be back walking the big dogs and blogging again in no time.

Don’t go too far away. DogDaz will be back soon.

Monday Mischief: Hall Shot

Animals can be so funny, don’t you think? Charlie was waiting for V, who is in the bathroom which is the door to the right. So, Sofie and Nine decided to join him and wait too. I could not resist taking the shot. You would think that these goofballs actually like each other. What is it about a closed-door that makes animals want to knock it down?

What kind of mischief did you get into today?

Black and White Sunday: Our Lil’ Terror

Nine has been getting into so much mischief lately. I am never sure what or who he is going to attack at any moment. He has been ripping up the carpet, especially the stairs, and all the fronts of the couches. As you know, he is merciless about chasing Noel and he and Mini get into some good fights too. The pheromone collar worked well for a long time, but now it seems to not really calm him at all. He is mostly a sweet boy, but he is making us crazy with his antics. Maybe it is a mid-life crisis at 9 years of age. Who knows.

Caturday: Repose #27

The cats have really taken to sleeping on Louise’s old dog bed. They have gotten to the point, that if she is laying it, which she still does sometimes, they try to stare her down until she moves to her new bed. You never know who you will find there, these days.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!
