Caturday: Nine’s New Spot

Nine discovered Louise’s night-time bed in Mom’s bedroom. He has decided that it is a wonderful place to get away from everyone else and take a nap. The other night however, when Louise was ready for bed, she did not know what to do because he was in her night-night spot. She never rousts a cat from any of her beds, so she went into the living room and laid down there instead of with Mommy.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Wonderful Wednesday: Happiness is a Treat-Ball

Sofie Bear here – I am very happy when I have a treat-ball filled with kibble to roll around and chew on. I love to pick it up in the air and smash it down on the kitchen floor so that it breaks in half and all the treats come out at one time (but that only happens when Mom doesn’t close it tight). When it doesn’t smash open, there seems to always be 1 or 2 treats left when I am too tired to smash or roll it anymore and that is when Mom shakes them out for me (that is nice of her, don’t you think).

My favorite is the ‘Pet Zone IQ‘ treat dispenser. Mom takes the middle stuff out to make it one big dispenser. When it has the divider in the middle, which is supposed to test how smart I am, it takes to long to get the stuff out and I get frustrated and it stops being fun. I think this is my 3rd or 4th one because I smash them so hard they break.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TREAT TOY?

Monday Mischief: Patience Is A Virtue

After the dogs have dinner (4:30 or 5 PM), Charles has decided that instead of waiting until later in the evening (7:30 or 8 PM), he wants his evening snack immediately. I have started calling it ‘Second Supper.’ He has become so insistent that he goes into his pen, which is where he eats because both he and Sofie are food aggressive and she will kill him, and starts to whine, yip, and fun around. I do my best to ignore him as long as I can, but if I am sitting in the living room, which is where his pen is, he will not stop. For some reason on this night, he actually went in his pen and was waiting patiently and sitting quietly for about 5 minutes, until he could not take it anymore.

Sofie, being the anxious mess that she is, cannot deal with this frenetic energy when he starts to do the little dog run around and barking thing, and she freaks out if I don’t watch the energy level before ‘second super.’

Louise and Sofie have their snack in fun toys that they roll around the living room and down the hall. It takes them a long time and Louise especially has a super time. Charles on the other hand, won’t play with any snack toys. I don’t know if he is lazy, stupid, or just manipulative. He wants a mini ‘Busy Bone’ and he wants it easy to get to and not hidden in any toys or anything. Lately he has been eating them so fast, that I have to make him wait at least 10 minutes in his pen until the girls are done. He sure doesn’t like that. These little dogs are so demanding.

What kind of mischief did you get into today?

Black and White Sunday: Getting Along

Mini Cooper has been lying with Noel on the bed lately, when she is not chasing her down the hall. I am not sure why Mini and Nine have been picking on the old lady so much, but sometimes they even attack her when she is in the litter box (that is a low blow). When things are quiet, like in the picture above, they are so sweet.

Have a wonderful Black and White Sunday! Happy Easter to those who celebrate.

Caturday: Dynamics

I remember back when Mini Cooper would snuggle close to Nine no matter where he was. These days, this is as close as they get, and I was surprised to even find them sleeping near each other. It is interesting how as the cats have aged the dynamic has changed considerably. Mostly I find Mini with Noel on the bed. Nine tends to keep to himself, though they both are picking on poor Noel more and more. The other night Nine and Noel had a knockdown, drag-out, catfight at snack time. I am not liking this dynamic one bit.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Wonderful Wednesday: Conversations with Sofie Bear

You need to understand that I have a lot to say, Mom, and just because you don’t always understand, does not mean that I am not going to continue to tell you what I think – Sofie Bear

Monday Mischief: We Want That!

Mom is very strict about human food when it comes to what she allows us to have. And, she really hates begging. So we just sit next to her nicely and stare at her and sometimes even droll. She always has carrots with everything, so we get a lot of those, but no bread, no meat, no chips. What kind of establishment are you running here??? – Sofie Bear

Caturday: Noel, The Mouser

Noel’s favorite toys are these little yellow chicks. They live in the herb window (where she spends most of her time). After breakfast, which she of course eats in the herb window, I usually go into my office down the hall from the kitchen, to start my day. In about 10 or 15 minutes I will hear her calling me, insistently – “Come now, you must see this, come come come.” She usually carries one of the chicks, as if it was a mouse prize, from the herb window to somewhere else on the kitchen counter or the kitchen table. She wants me to come and see her prize. Seriously, this goes on almost every morning. Then I pick up her chick, pat her on the head, tell her what a wonderful mouser she is, and throw it back in the herb window.

I want to come back as Noel.

I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Wonderful Wednesday: What Happened to Nine

About a week after I was home from the hospital for my back surgery, Nine started to sneeze, a lot. Then a few days later he started throwing up and stopped eating. Then he started throwing up just bile because he had nothing in his stomach (at least that is what we figured). We monitored his output and we were not seeing much (with many animals in the house, though it may sound weird, we know the box habits of each – some cover, some don’t, some use the side – Catpeople know what I am talking about.) Something was not right and we were worried. He was sleeping more than usual and we hoped that it would pass.

Days went by and he was not eating and the gagging continued. He looked dehydrated and failed my pinch test. I tried to get him an appointment at the Vet (it was Friday) but both my vets (our dogs and cats have different ones, don’t ask) were booked until next week. On Saturday, we were getting overly concerned (it has been over a week), so we decided to take him to Vet Emergency (thank goodness for them). What if something was blocking his stomach? What if he was dehydrated and we could not help him? What if…. I researched cat flu, viruses, everything I could. A big fear of mine is that whatever it is will pass on to all the other animals.

Nine must have overheard me making the appointment at Vet Emergency because he totally disappeared. We assume it was into the rafters of the basement (he does like to hide up there). We could not find him for hours. Remember now that I just had triple disc back surgery, so I was of very little help to V around all this because I could not bend, lift, or twist. I called Vet Emergency back and told them that as soon as he reappears we will get him there (it was now late Saturday afternoon).

Finally, he reappeared and we were able to scoop him into the carrier, and off we went to Vet Emergency. Being that it is COVID time, of course, we could not go into the appointment with him, but they make sure to let us know that it would cost lots of $$$$ and they asked if we were ok with a minimum of $XXX before they did anything. What could we do? We said “sure.”

We waited and waited and waited, and then the Vet called and said they did not see any problem upon examination and could they take x-rays, and other things, and of course, you know what we said, “Please find out what is wrong with him.”

We waited and waited and waited, and the Vet called and said they did not know what the problem was but they would send him home with an expensive appetite enhancer and see if that worked. Or we could bring him back on Monday for a $900 test if he was not improving.

5 hours later we all came home (I was not supposed to be sitting in a car that long right after surgery but I forgot that until I tried to walk, the things we do for our loves). Nine went back to his bed and we just shook our heads and wondered what we just put him and ourselves through to have no answers.

Over the next 48 hours, he continued to be sick, not eating, not outputting. Nothing appeared to change. So finally, I gave him this appetite enhancer. Later that nite he was a little hungry, so we started to give him some wet food, then some dry food, then anything he wanted. I gave him the appetite enhancer again the next day. It took a few days, then he appeared to be his old self again. Actually, worse, he is beating everyone up, and being the very spring has sprung Tomcat, running the house and everyone in it.

We will never know what the cause of his illness is or was, but for now, all is well.

Nine – Hitting the camera because he wants more food

P.S. When I had cataract surgery a few years ago, Nine decided to run out the door and get lost for a few days. He always seems to do something when I am at my weakest. Thanks, Nine.
