5.12.12 U B Ugly!

I wish I knew why the Turkey Vultures are in my trees staring down at me?  They scare me.  They seem to settle in and just watch.  Is something dead in the yard that I do not know about?  Are they a message or a warning that I should heed?  I think these birds are really UUUUGGGLLLY!  Their large black bodies and red wrinkly faces are really ominous.  You can not go anywhere in Maryland with out seeing these large birds eating something on the side of the road.  They eat dead things (which is good I guess because they are a form of recycling), but they are impossible to get rid of and have been known to take over whole communities.  It may be hard to believe but Turkey and Black Vultures are federally protected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  I guess that is only fair if their numbers are dwindling, but I still think they are creepy looking.

UGLY!!!!

5.11.12 “Who Me?”

Nine has decided that since the dogs get to go in the back yard out the sliding door, he should be able to follow.  So he hides behind the TV that is next to the slider and waits for the moment when someone opens the door and maybe does not see him escape.  When he gets caught trying to sneak out he gives me that “Who me?” look.  You know the one; when your animal has done something but they think the stupid human would never catch on to the game that they are trying to play on you.  “I’m so cute, I would never try something like that Mom.”  Poor Nine, life is just so hard when you have to follow the rules.

5.10.12 The shoes have it!

Whenever I am getting ready to go out, Sofie throws herself on my feet and has a little tantrum.  “Please mommy, don’t leave me, what am I going to do if you put your shoes on, that means you are going somewhere, me me me me me.”  I find it interesting how she knows the difference between when I am getting dressed but staying home vs when I am getting dressed to go out.  Now of course, that does involve shoes, which I don’t like to wear and avoid as much as possible. Maybe the shoes are the difference?  She really goes crazy when I go to my business clothes closet, then she figures I am going to be gone for more than a minute,  She has even taken to stealing one shoe so that I can never leave her.  Silly dog, she doesn’t know that we humans tend to have more than one pair of shoes.

5.9.12 Be Kind To Your Office Staff

Noel spends a significant part of her life on my desk, in her pink bed under the window.  She is almost always with me (except now for some strange reason).  She and Muffin used to both sleep on the desk, but he has taken to sleeping in the living room on the couch ever since the winter (I assume because it is warmer).  Noel likes to help me type (you have seen many of her blogs if you follow the zoo).  Today, Muffy actually walked on my laptop and shut it down in the middle of a business meeting where I was instant messaging with someone.  “Oh excuse me Mr. Big Business person, my cat just walked on my computer and that is why I told you to asdjfhajksdfhdfkashdfkasjdkfa and then I disappeared.”  I am sure that will go over well at Head Quarters.  Speaking of that however, there does not seem to be a conference call or business meeting that I attend, anywhere in the world, that there is not a dog barking, or a baby crying.  I used to think my dog Nikki’s bark was connected to the mute button of my phone.  Really!  I would take it off mute, she would bark, on mute, she was quiet.  I am not lying, I tested it.  When I tell people I work from home and have 7 animals they look at me like I am crazy, but I just tell people I have the most loving and cuddly office staff, and I would not trade them for anything in the world.  Believe me, I never eat lunch alone.

5.8.12 Whose got your back?

I am not sure why but my dogs seem to sleep like bookends a great deal of the time.  Do we animals sleep with our back to our best friend because that is safe?  This way you know your back is protected and that your best buddy will see things coming from one way and you will see them from the other?  I just find it interesting because that is how I sleep as a human.  I always turn out with my back to the center of the bed.  Otherwise, it feels to vulnerable.  I have tried to turn with my back to the outside but something about that just does not feel safe. A Travelodge survey found that 50% of British couples prefer sleeping back-to-back, either not touching (27%) or touching (23%).   When I started looking into this for the blog, I found a ton of hits about dogs sleeping on their backs, but I only found one (http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Dog_Sleep) that talked about back-to-back behavior.  That blog talked about it being bonding behavior as well as safety.  Since I do not sleep with my dogs in the bed, I wonder how people and dogs that do sleep together are positioned.  Does your dog have your back?

5.7.12 Leave my donut alone!

image

Sofie loves her new toy, I call it ‘Donut.’ Donut is an Kong Airdog toy, which is a variation on a tennis ball (the dogs love this line of toys). She has taken off all the skin by now, which is what my dogs love to do to tennis ball things. She enjoys carrying it and ‘Beaver’ (her lovey) in her mouth at the same time.  This morning she came to me with Beaver, Donut, and another soft toy in her mouth (wish I could have gotten a picture).

Lulu gets jealous sometimes when Sofie has ‘special’ toys and she steals them to tease Sofie. I do believe that the dogs are capable of teasing and playing games on each other.  I watch Lulu set Sofie up for a fall all the time.  She actually places toys in Sofie’s mouth, just so she could then snatch them away.

Here is Lulu stealing Donut, and the chase is on…..
