Missing Louise and Sofie a lot these days. Sometimes grief sneaks up on you when you are not even thinking about it. Maybe it is because Halloween would have been Louise’s 13th birthday and Sofie would have been 12 on Thanksgiving. I know that Sir Charles misses them too. He doesn’t play with any toys since Sofie left last March. He always wanted to be near her and play with whatever she would play with, even though she was not always the kindest to him.
Mini Cooper has taken to Louise’s bed and blanket in the living room now that the days are colder. And even Jolie has been sleeping on Lulu’s bed on occasion. I knew if I left it, someone would move in. I did take away the other big bed because the ‘Littles’ mostly sleep on the couches and I was able to reclaim some floor space.
Maybe the tilt of the globe in the fall has me on a tilt. I am missing Mr. Nine, the cat, too, who also passed last March. We are thinking about a kitten possibly for Mini. She misses him terribly and takes her anger out on poor Noel (who is going to be 16). With only one male animal in the house (Charles) maybe a little boy kitty will balance out the energy. Don’t you think its time for a kitten?
Have a wonderful Black and White Sunday. Enjoy the changes of the season.

Henry was walking Skeletor and Catzilla. Then it started to rain. Jolie was barking at them (you can see her in the background).
Henry is wearing a Petco Animal Charities T-shirt. Remember to Adopt don’t Shop!

I couldn’t pass up the photo opportunity when Charlie nestled between V and me. It is only on a rare occasion that he lets us sit next to each other without jumping in the middle. Usually, he wants me to move so he can have V all to himself. On this particular day, he just cuddled down and went right to sleep. We don’t mind his antics because he is so darn cute. How can you not love that face?

Queen Noel very rarely suns herself at the front door anymore. Her habits have changed a great deal with her age (now 15 1/2). She mostly stays up in her herb window or on Mom’s recliner in the living room. But today, she was there to meet the Littles as they returned from a crisp fall walk. Charles even brought a whole dead branch as an offering to the Queen.
Oh, BTW, I noticed that the dog art on the front door has now moved down from the Louise and Sofie level in the middle to the lower level with the Littles. Noel doesn’t care -she likes the view no matter what.
Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

The neighborhood is starting to look a bit spooky. This is my first October with the Zoo so I am new to all this and not sure what to expect. Mom is going to get started putting our decorations out now that the ‘Ghost of Ian’ nor’easter has passed and the ground is drying up.
Do your humans decorate for Halloween? It is really fun. Show us in the comments.

When you bring a new dog into the mix, you are never sure if the existing animals are going to accept it. And, we were concerned because Mr. Charles is 14 years old already and he doesn’t always feel the best.

But boy does he love Jolie. He even lets her lean on him! (And he doesn’t like anyone leaning on him.) I love that he gets a little prance in his step when he sees her coming and that he’s been coming for a walk with us in the mornings, which he hardly ever did.
Charles isn’t the only one that has taken to Jojo. Mini Cooper, who was always the other dog in the pack (even though she’s a cat), seems to never be far away. We could not have asked for a better transition for the new member. Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday.

I know that it has only been since July that Jolie has come to live with us, which in dog time is not long. This has been a very big change for a dog that lived 6-1/2 years in a cage with other dogs and only went out maybe once a day.
Jolie is very protective of her kennel. She especially does not want me to clean the mat or the blankets. Maybe she is afraid of losing them? Maybe there was only a cold floor in her previous one?
I gave her Louise’s sheepskin to keep her warm and she loves it. Lulu came with that sheepskin from her foster when she was a puppy and around here we pass things forward when we can.
Jolie has started to disappear into her kennel whenever she hears loud noises or voices. It is her safe space. But recently she puts herself to bed around 8:30 PM and just stays in there. I am so glad that she has a place she feels safe in, but sorry, baby, Mom’s gonna wash those smelly blankets.

Tonight starts the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the ‘head of the year.’ At this time of year, I become introspective and review the past year. With the loss of Nine, Sofie, and Louise, last spring, I felt a need to look deeper at what the Jewish scripture says about the spirit of the animals and where they go when they leave their earthly bodies. So, below are some ramblings and my pseudo investigation. The Zoo and I wish you peace and health for days to come.
L’shanah tovah tikatev v’taihatem “May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year”
——————————————–
Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of what the Jewish people call the ‘Days of Awe.’ These are 10-days when people are asked to look inward; to think about what they have done in the past year, both good and bad. This is a special time when you have the opportunity to ask for forgiveness, to make amends to anyone you may have hurt or wronged in any way. The ‘Days of Awe’ end with the Yom Kippur holiday, known as the ‘Day of Atonement.’
According to the first book of the written Torah, Genesis, God judges all humans and creatures during that 10-day period to decide if they will be inscribed in the Book of Life for another year. I am not sure exactly how the Great Spirit judges creatures, but the scripture says ‘all creatures’ are judged, so I guess they are. Mostly the Torah talks about how God doesn’t like people or animals killing (lifeblood) each other, but with creatures, since that is part of their nature when it comes to survival, I think that is kind of a difficult thing to interpret. Anyway…
What I really wanted to know is whether the Torah talked about where creatures go after they leave their earthly shells. I found support that animals go to heaven in the article called “Do Dogs Go To Heaven):
Chapter eleven and chapter sixty-five of the Prophet Isaiah each describe the new heaven and the new earth: he who dies at 100 will be considered a mere youth; the wolf and the lamb will feed together and the lion will eat straw like an ox. We don’t see that in this world, so it relates to the next. Animals will be there who will neither harm nor destroy.
Isaiah 11:6 “… the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. (NIV)
The way I read this, animals will be at peace in heaven.
This last year has taken many souls from the Zoo and their passings weighs heavy on us still. I know that everything has its season. I know it was just their time to move on. But, I find solace in the thought that their souls may be together, with all my departed, in a place of peace and eternal harmony.
May this new year bring health and happiness into your home and may you find renewal for the year to come.
