Local Shiba Knows About the Store-Brand Treats

An area Shiba Inu has discovered his regular Purina dog treats have been replaced with the generic store brand — and he’s not happy about it.

Witnesses say the pup started getting suspicious when the normally delicious little morsels began tasting like particle board. And he would know, since he chews on the bookshelves every damn day.

5.13.12 Still Puppies

Puppy Lulu maybe 6 month April 2010

I have been thinking about puppies.  My cuties have grown so fast.  Louise, aka Lulu Belle, was already about 5 months old when she came to us, so I never really got to see her in her littlest puppiness.  She was so cute and loved to sleep under the grapes (now she likes to eat  the stems – yes, I know grapes can be poison to dogs).  It took a while to teach her that people were Ok, but she loved being with us, and especially with the other animals. I decided that her birthday would be Halloween (31 Oct), so she is 2 1/2 years old now.

Puppy Sofie maybe 14 wks March 2011

When Lulu was little, Squash was already blind and an old man.  I never got to meet him as a puppy.  He found us when he was already about 7 or so years old.  I sometimes imagine how cute he must have been.  He was very good with Lil’ Lulu.

After Squash past on, we got Sofie. The rescue thought Sofie Bear was about 12 weeks old and a Shepard/Collie.  Since she really is more like a Sheltie/Corgi, she may have been 14 or 16 weeks:  Who knows?  I made her birthday Thanksgiving time, 25 November.  She is 1 1/2 years old now.  I have not told her that she is not going to be a 100 # dog yet, I figure I will wait until she is older.

The girls are still very much puppies.  Sometimes they remind me of the endless energy I had in my youth,  Sofie still gets these big bags under her eyes at bed time and needs to get ‘Beaver’ and go Nite-nite, almost like a human child.  Never had a puppy like that before.  Louise gets very “Mommy, Mommy” sometimes, and wants all the attention on her.

There is so much to enjoy in our animals.  Of course I wasn’t happy this morning when the cats knocked some laser pointer off the shelf and I found puppy Sofie chewing it with 3 little batteries on the floor next to her.  I freaked out and watch her for hours, hoping I was not to late. I also forgot how much work all these youngsters are (2 puppies, 2 kittens, and 3 old cranky cats – oh I almost forgot and the teenager).

Happy Mother’s Day! Whether human, animal, or even a plant, watching and participating in helping things grow has been my greatest reward.  Thank you for letting me be your mother.

5.10.12 The shoes have it!

Whenever I am getting ready to go out, Sofie throws herself on my feet and has a little tantrum.  “Please mommy, don’t leave me, what am I going to do if you put your shoes on, that means you are going somewhere, me me me me me.”  I find it interesting how she knows the difference between when I am getting dressed but staying home vs when I am getting dressed to go out.  Now of course, that does involve shoes, which I don’t like to wear and avoid as much as possible. Maybe the shoes are the difference?  She really goes crazy when I go to my business clothes closet, then she figures I am going to be gone for more than a minute,  She has even taken to stealing one shoe so that I can never leave her.  Silly dog, she doesn’t know that we humans tend to have more than one pair of shoes.

5.9.12 Be Kind To Your Office Staff

Noel spends a significant part of her life on my desk, in her pink bed under the window.  She is almost always with me (except now for some strange reason).  She and Muffin used to both sleep on the desk, but he has taken to sleeping in the living room on the couch ever since the winter (I assume because it is warmer).  Noel likes to help me type (you have seen many of her blogs if you follow the zoo).  Today, Muffy actually walked on my laptop and shut it down in the middle of a business meeting where I was instant messaging with someone.  “Oh excuse me Mr. Big Business person, my cat just walked on my computer and that is why I told you to asdjfhajksdfhdfkashdfkasjdkfa and then I disappeared.”  I am sure that will go over well at Head Quarters.  Speaking of that however, there does not seem to be a conference call or business meeting that I attend, anywhere in the world, that there is not a dog barking, or a baby crying.  I used to think my dog Nikki’s bark was connected to the mute button of my phone.  Really!  I would take it off mute, she would bark, on mute, she was quiet.  I am not lying, I tested it.  When I tell people I work from home and have 7 animals they look at me like I am crazy, but I just tell people I have the most loving and cuddly office staff, and I would not trade them for anything in the world.  Believe me, I never eat lunch alone.

5.8.12 Whose got your back?

I am not sure why but my dogs seem to sleep like bookends a great deal of the time.  Do we animals sleep with our back to our best friend because that is safe?  This way you know your back is protected and that your best buddy will see things coming from one way and you will see them from the other?  I just find it interesting because that is how I sleep as a human.  I always turn out with my back to the center of the bed.  Otherwise, it feels to vulnerable.  I have tried to turn with my back to the outside but something about that just does not feel safe. A Travelodge survey found that 50% of British couples prefer sleeping back-to-back, either not touching (27%) or touching (23%).   When I started looking into this for the blog, I found a ton of hits about dogs sleeping on their backs, but I only found one (http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Dog_Sleep) that talked about back-to-back behavior.  That blog talked about it being bonding behavior as well as safety.  Since I do not sleep with my dogs in the bed, I wonder how people and dogs that do sleep together are positioned.  Does your dog have your back?

5.7.12 Leave my donut alone!

image

Sofie loves her new toy, I call it ‘Donut.’ Donut is an Kong Airdog toy, which is a variation on a tennis ball (the dogs love this line of toys). She has taken off all the skin by now, which is what my dogs love to do to tennis ball things. She enjoys carrying it and ‘Beaver’ (her lovey) in her mouth at the same time.  This morning she came to me with Beaver, Donut, and another soft toy in her mouth (wish I could have gotten a picture).

Lulu gets jealous sometimes when Sofie has ‘special’ toys and she steals them to tease Sofie. I do believe that the dogs are capable of teasing and playing games on each other.  I watch Lulu set Sofie up for a fall all the time.  She actually places toys in Sofie’s mouth, just so she could then snatch them away.

Here is Lulu stealing Donut, and the chase is on…..

5.5.12 Her Secret Is Patience

Adopt the pace of nature:  her secret is patience.  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Watching and waiting.  The dogs seem to spend a great deal of time watching and waiting.  They love to look out the door and watch the world; some things they bark at, others they just watch walk by.  The poor things seem to always be waiting for me to play with them.  Waiting for me to make breakfast. Waiting for me to make dinner.  Waiting to go for a walk.  Waiting to go outside and run around.  Watching me while I work.  Watching me do chores.  Waiting and watching while I talk to a neighbor.  Watching squirrels that they are not allowed to chase.  Waiting for the moment when I tell them to run free.  I guess we all spend a lot of time in our lives watching and waiting.  ‘Patience’ they say is a virtue.  The ability to wait for something calmly.  The secret to so many things in life appears to be just giving them time and having patience. I find this especially true when working with animals.  Both my dogs require tremendous patience from me: Louise because she is fearful and Sofie because she is headstrong.  So as they watch and wait for me, I, in turn, watch and wait for them.

5.4.12 Chasing Tree Rats

I am mad at Louise for taking off after a squirrel when we were at the house front steps and then she disappeared into the neighbors yard.  I put Sofie in the house and got a lead and went out calling her. I guess there is not much you can do when a Hound/Lab sees or smells a varmint, but I just don’t like it.  She fools me because she can be walking with me off lead, so nice and calm and then zoooooooooom – there she goes.  Well that is just not safe, and not right, and I just don’t like it.  So I am mad at you Louise.  I try and try and try but the clicker and the treats are no match for a smelly, peanut eating, tree rat.
