I know, I am not supposed to give the dogs new toys when I come home from trips, but I can not help myself. You see, it all started about 18 years ago, when Peanut was little. There were these inexpensive little bean bag animals that you could get for about $5 in a cart in the airport (I mostly traveled out of Washington National, in those days, now called Reagan National). I started buying a bunch at a time and keeping one in my suitcase for when I traveled (which was often), that way I always had a little something for the baby when I got home (I know that is a terrible habit to start for kids -“what did you bring me?”). Who knew that those little bean bags would end up being called “Beanie Babies” and become all the rage for little kids for a while. Anyway, I digress.
I think that is why I give the dogs a new toy when I come home from a trip. It’s called “Mommy Guilt.” But they don’t mind. They just like to play with something new. This trip, it was an orange Wubba-Wet in honor of the blizzard named Nemo (it is a good snow toy but luckily we only got rain).
Post Script: Here are some pictures of Mom trying to get home right before the blizzard on Friday. That is the plane being deiced. The snow was falling about 2″ an hour and had just started. We are glad she made it out of New York.

Things have been crazy lately. Mom has been traveling the last two weeks even though she ripped her knee. She came home on the weekend to see us, which was nice, but she still could not walk long distances. We have been going to daycare at least every other day when she is gone. She is coming home tonight and we understand that she has cancelled any future trips until she can get through a couple of weeks of physical therapy. We are really going crazy without being able to walk everyday down to the river or around the neighborhood. We know Mommy wants to walk us but it is just to hard for her now. And it doesn’t help her that there is snow on the ground too.

Noel misses Mom a lot too when she is gone and doesn’t come out of her office much except to eat. She doesn’t want to talk much to anyone when Mom isn’t here. Then when Mom comes home, she wants to be close to her but us dogs are much bigger and we want Mom’s lap, so Noel just has to wait. We know that Mom makes time for everyone when she can. Noel is her special baby.
I think I will just sleep until Mom returns. No fun without her.

Mommy says that she is very thankful for us dogs because we have been helping her exercise her bum knees and keeping them safe from cats and other things that may hurt them. We like to lie on the couch with her and hold her fuzzy blanket down. Also, we really like to get in her face when she is trying to do those lie down and lift your leg thingies she has been doing lately. We are all over her as you can see by these pictures she snapped of us helping. Well, I’m helping, Sofie fell asleep (again). – Lulu Belle

I am thankful for my first award of the year. Thank you to Vicki at This Abundantly Delicious Life for bestowing upon us the Super Sweet Blogging Award. Vicki has an incredibly inspiring life. She has a long marriage to her best friend, Jim, and they love to travel and take in all the wonderful things that life has to offer. She is a cancer survivor with this strong and insightful view of life that everyone can learn from. I am lucky enough to have virtually met Vicki through our work and she has become someone who I will follow for years to come. Go check out her latest ski adventure.
I appreciate each and every award that I have every been given. Thank you thank you thank you. We love you Peanut.
If I sit on Peanut, maybe she can’t go back to school.
Ok – so I put a few words in the captions. The pictures really do tell the story however and the dogs are not happy when Peanut goes back to school (far away), which she did this week. They love to play with her and especially lie on her bed while she reads and computes. See you soon Peanut!

The welcome that a dog gives you when you return from a trip, whether across the world or even just across town, is something so wonderful that I could not imagine life without it. Dogs make you feel like you are the most important being in the world. ‘Mom! Mom! You are home. We are so happy to see you! Happy! Happy! Yahoo! You’re here! We love you! Love Love Love Love Love.’ You get the idea.
Cats on the other hand sure seem to show great disdain. “I don’t really care that you have returned. You are a lowly human that chose to be out of my territory for a while, and now you are back, and you will have to regain my approval to be in my space and until I am ready to show you that you have been here a sufficient amount time, I will shun you!”
Oh, were you talking to me?
I’ve got to say that I think the dogs win this one.

Wow, it is hard to stay away from the blog for a week. It makes me realize how addicted I am to the process of putting my thoughts down about the little furry ones and also reading all the fun things that people are saying and doing in their worlds. I must say that it was kind of freeing not to have to meet the deadline of a postaday (which I had been doing for 14 months), because, sometimes, I did find that to be stressful, and that is not what I want this experience to be.
I have been out of town on business all week so I have been crazy busy without blogging, but I have missed it. I wanted to tell you that life has changed here at the zoo a bit since I decided to take a week off. Not just because we are still trying to get used to the loss of Miss Constance Kitty and The Muffin Man, which we feel every day, but because, I badly injured my knee last Friday (final diagnosis yet to be known) and currently I can not walk the dogs (or myself for that matter). This has really complicated my life since I love to walk them. It is hard enough for them with my travel schedule, because no one walks them when I am out of town (mostly they go in the yard and then to day care twice a week), but now, even I can not walk them. I have 2 active puppies who love the time with me and also have the need for that type of exercise. I am worried because Louise usually waits and will not do her business until I take her for a walk. I have no idea how long before I can really walk far again and if I need surgery, ‘Oh Boy!’ that will really tie me down. Should I hire a dog walker? I know this is silly but I don’t really want to because I am jealous and want to be the one to be with them, but it needs to be about the dogs, not me.
What do other people who can’t walk do? Will the dogs get used to just being ‘yard dogs?’ Will they still love me? (I guess I am feeling a little low…) What a weird post to restart my year but it is going to be a little different for a while.
