4.4.13 Thankful Thursday: A Moment In Time

I don’t know about you, but sometimes, the simplest things can make me smile. I feel so blessed and am so thankful for those moments.  Take for example, Louise running full speed when I whistle for her.  I love to watch her run.  When she gets into it, she runs with such abandon and at that moment, she is the happiest dog in the world. It is a moment in time; a thankful moment; a happy moment.  Today I happened to catch this moment on video.  I hope that it makes you smile.

What moment are you thankful for today?

Sofie and NineSofie and Nine – head to head.

From this angle, little 10 lb (4.5 kg) Nine looks as big as 50 lb (22.6 kg) Sofie.

4.2.3 Love = Proper Health Care

I read an article by Steve Dale, pet expert and certified dog and cat behavior consultant, the other day in my local paper that made me sad.  It says that each year less and less people annually are taking their pets to the doctor and 3X as many cat owners do not take them as compared to dog owners.  This was from a study published by the American Veterinary Medical Association.  What made me even sadder is that preventable illnesses, from pests like fleas and mosquitoes  that could be avoided, are not, because people are not safeguarding their animals with preventives.  OMG!  The cost of the treatment to prevent heartworm disease is so much less expensive than the cost of treating the animal once it has the disease.  And I can not image the emotional cost to the family and the pet, when an animal does get sick.

All the doctor stuff in the vets office

What the saddest part of the whole article to me was that he reported many “owners believe they would know if a pet were sick, ” and, “up to 15%… mistakenly feel they can Google any vet solution.”  This is a very sad trend if people think that the internet can give health solutions for themselves or their pets.

Waiting for Dr. Kate

Waiting for Dr. Kate

I know that I am preaching to the choir, but if you know people who don’t take their animals to see a vet because they can not afford it, maybe you can raise funds in your community to make it more available?  Locally, Rude Ranch Animal Rescue just opened a Spay Spa and Neuter Nook, for everyone.  I wish that everyone had that option.

If you know people who think they can solve their own medical issues or their animals on the internet, please tell them that doctors and veterinarians are trained to spot a lot of things we regular people can not, like diabetes and cancer.

Thanks for listening.

3.27.13 Wordless Wednesday: Mopey Sofie

wpid-IMG953027.jpgI was away last weekend.  Sofie was not happy about it.  Poor Sofie.  That is her moping step.  She waits there until I return, unless of course someone gives her food, or a toy, or a cat wants to get down the stairs. K8 took the picture. She sent it to me on my phone.  BOL.   Happy Wednesday.

3.26.13 DeTails

Sofie TailSofie’s tail against Louise’s black fur.  It looked really cool to me.  They were lying on Peanut’s bed.

I wish sometimes that I could be faster on the camera.  There are so many times when I want to capture what I am looking at, or sounds that I hear, and share them with others, but I don’t have the technology.  We  have become a world of sharing images and sounds.  Thanks to the internet we are able to capture moments in time and catapult them across the universe.  It is amazing how much more we can experience because of these incredible inventions.  Innovation is endless.  “G-d is in the details.”

3.19.13 What Sofie Hears

2013-03-17_08-19-36_811

Last night the dogs and I went to bed around 10:00PM (22:00).  They went into their kennels, as usual on the other side of my bedroom, and I went to sleep.  I nodded off around 11:11, because I remember seeing the digital display on the TV.  The next thing I knew it was 11:26 and Sofie is whining and barking her head off.  I opened the kennels and let them both out in the back yard, at which point I heard the screeching of either a fox or a raccoon.  Sofie’s hearing is amazing.  I didn’t hear anything until I opened the door, but she was woken by the sound through the exterior wall, through the cover on the kennel.  When I got them back in and thanked them for making sure our home was safe, we all went back to bed.  Then about 4:30 AM she started the whine again, “Let me out and let me at it!”  This time, I ignored her and finally she quieted. (This is one of the reasons not to have your animals sleep in your bedroom, but I digress.)  I don’t want to discourage either of my dogs  from doing their job of protecting the house and family from intruders, but Sofie can hear a fox two towns away (OK, I am exaggerating, but only a little).  Her hearing sensitivity is much more acute than Louise or any other dog I have ever had.   At least I am assuming it is hearing and not smell.  Do I try to train her out of making any noise when she is in her kennel?  She only fusses when she either has to go to the bathroom or there is something like this going on outside the house.  She is a hyper-sound sensitive dog and I am trying to figure out how to instruct her when it is OK to bark and when it isn’t.  Or is this a losing battle?

I definitely am losing the whine battle.  Check out an older post “Would You Like Some Cheese With That Whine” .
