Monday Mischief: All the leaves are brown…

mm-10-24-16

I am helping V sweep the leaves off the deck. This is great fun. I lie here in this pile. Then I lie there in that pile. Why is V hitting me with the broom? What did I do? I just want to help move the crunchy brown leaves around.

Monday Mischief: Knots

mm10-17-16-knots

Do you tie knots in your leashes? Tying knots in my leashes helps me when walking the dogs. With 2 dogs, I do a dance with both leashes most of the time. I use 6 foot leads, of a good weight, and I tie a few knots in them (usually at 3 and 5 feet marks). When I drop a lead, which sometimes I do on purpose to free my hands and pick up ‘you know what,’ and sometimes it just happens, I am able to immediately step on the leash, and because the knot is there, it is less likely to run under the arch of my foot. And there are the times that one dog is closer than the other (which happens often with 2 on the left), so I choke up to the 3 foot knot and don’t have any drag on the ground (I hate muddy leads). It makes me feel like I have a bit more control when I am walking, though I know, if I really need a leash to walk the dogs, I don’t really have any control at all. The dogs humor me though.

Monday Mischief: Reflection

mm-10-10-16

Sometimes at night, I have no idea where the dogs are in the yard. Usually I can see Sofie’s blond fur reflecting some light. But Louise, in all her sleek and beautiful blackness, disappears into the darkness. I try to keep a reflective collar on her so that I can find her. Even with that, she sometimes comes running out of no where in the night and scares the pants off of me. And, if she is busy with some squirrel or hole digging and does not want to come in, there is no way that I am finding her at night. Nights are made for mischief and black dogs can rule the night!

Wordless Wednesday: Watching

ww-10-5-16

So many little humans getting off the school bus.

Mojo and Zelda are walking with their human. NO FAIR!

There’s a squirrel in the tree. Let me at it!

Where’s that fox? I smell it.

What’s all that catawalling down at the house with those 4 cats?

I love when Mom leaves the window open.

Hope you are having a great Wednesday.

Monday Mischief: Hoover (aka Louise), the Plott Hound

mm-9-26-16

Louise is such a hound dog. I know people think she is a little Labrador, but actually, she is much more hound. I am thinking Plott hound. I actually found pictures of Plott hounds on the internet that look exactly like her.

plott-hounds

She hates water for one thing (aren’t labs supposed to love water?). And she doesn’t have webbed feet. Her nose is stuck to the ground always trailing some scent. She can smell a fox a mile away. I think I am going to rename her ‘Hoover,’ after the vacuum cleaner. Lulu, I think I found your family tree. Not that it is really important, but sometimes knowing the linage of your dog can help you with training, medical, and other issues. They say Plott Hounds are loyal and stubborn. That would be my girl!
Happy Louise

DogDaz Zoo: Fluttering South for the Winter

9-22-16-butterfly-weed more-flutter-9-23-16

It is autumn now so the Monarch butterflies are passing through, maybe they’ll go all the way to Mexico. The Swallowtails will stay right here and another cycle of fluttering will start again in the spring. If you want to know where my eastern butterflies go in the winter -> click here. We love the ‘flutterbys’ and plant so that they will come and stay. The pool is surrounded by butterfly bushes (buddleia) and we have sedum and butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), a form of milkweed. Monarch caterpillars ONLY eat milkweed. In fact, the monarch butterfly is also known as the “milkweed butterfly.” The milkweed plant provides all the nourishment the monarch needs to transform the Monarch caterpillar into the adult butterfly.

Hello, Autumn. See you next year, Flutterbys!

Monday Mischief: Ruffus

MM 9.12.16

We can’t remember if we ever introduced you to Mom’s pool dog, Ruffus? Ru lives in the pool and doesn’t eat much or need walks. He just likes to float. Mom is closing the pool today for the winter, so Ruffus is going to be a flat dog for a while and live in a crate in the garage. Boy, I am glad that I am not a pool dog. I hate my crate. – Sofie Bear
