12.9.12 Another Star For Our Badge

Blog of the Year Award 3 star thumbnail

tucker2

Thank you to The Daily Golden for adding another star to our BLOG OF THE YEAR award.  It is so kind of the Golden Tucker and his human, Shannon, to think of us here at the zoo.  When you visit the very fun ‘The Daily Golden’ you will learn a lot about the beautiful breed.

Our Sofie is golden and we haven’t the heart to tell her that she will not be a Retriever when she grows up. Shhhhh!

12.4.12 Tasty Tuesday: Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies

We are joining the Tasty Tuesday Blog Hop thanks to Hey, It’s Jet Here.  Please hop over to visit Jet and tell him DogDaz sent you.  Jet, JJ, and their human make some tasty stuff over there in Casa Jet.

tasty-tuesdays1

So… for our first Tasty Tuesday, we want to share the Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies that we made for Sofie’s birthday this year.  We found the recipe somewhere on the internet (can’t find the link, sorry) and then improvised the rest.  They were yummy good, and since Sofie doesn’t like cookies very much I needed to make sure they were peanut buttery and extra special.

Ingredients for about 25 cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
  3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

I cut them into stars.  The girls thought they were dog yummy!

“You won’t mind if we try a little excavating under this railroad tie, Mom, would you?”

“There appears to be some weird creature under the grass and we really want to help it escape from underground.”

12.2.12 Meet Pickles

Pickles the Puppy

Meet Pickles.  She is my friends Mastiff/boxer.  The sweetest giant headed thing you will ever meet.  I thought she would grow into that head, but it just kept getting bigger, along with the rest of her.  She is about 90 lbs now and solid muscle.  I was playing tug with her the other day (big mistake on my part), and she almost dragged me across the room.  They are thinking of getting another one and naming him or her,  “Relish.”  You just have to love it!

11.27.12: I Admit It – I Gamble

Sometimes you win.  Sometimes you don’t.  Life is a gamble.  There are no sure bets.  I figure it just depends on how much you are willing to put into something to see if there is anything that you get out of it.  Those of you that know me personally, know that I love to gamble; but I am also not willing to risk more than I am prepared to lose (so is that really a gamble?).

Blogging to me is like a slot machine: I never know on any given day if I am going to hit the jackpot of readers or not (I do look at that Stats page a lot).  But, no matter what, I have fun blogging, so for me, it’s a win.   It takes a considerable amount of time and energy to blog.  I have to spend time thinking about what to blog about.  I worry what will make a good read.  What is important to say, and how to say it.  Should I do it this way, or that way?  Should I take a chance that people are going to read what I wrote?  That I might make some people: think, smile, pass-me-by, ‘Like’ me?  Do I care enough? or too much?  What if they hate me?  What if I do all this work and no one reads it?  In the end, I win though, because I have a great time doing it.

“Gambling has been ubiquitous in human history, and the gambling impulse has served us well. It is part of “the adventurer within us”– that part of ourselves which lusts for change, the wooing of the unknown, chance, danger, all that is new. It sends us to both the gaming tables and the moon, the laboratory and the numbers man. It is part of what makes us human.

…Studies show that, contrary to popular belief, gambling is by and large beneficial to the gambler and increases rather than decreases his efficiency. It is beneficial in that it stimulates, offers hope, allows decision making, and, in many cases, provides the gambler with “peak experience,” that godlike feeling when all of one’s physical and emotional senses are “go.”” http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/gamble/procon/virtues.html

Recent Wins!!!!

When I lived in the State of Connecticut it’s gambling motto was: “You Can’t Win, If You Don’t Play.”  That is kind of my motto too.  Every time I rescue an animal and bring it into my home, it is a gamble.  Will they fit, will they create havoc, and with some, will they even survive the night?  This has given me some of the greatest joys, but also, some deep sadness.  I admit it: I am a Gambler.
