When P’nut was born, there was Alice (on the back of the chair),Nikki (a Cocker Spaniel who thought she was a cat, on the back of the couch), Rosie (my soul cat who died a week after this picture was taken @20), and Gertrude, who was too shy to meet the baby. P’nut was 1 day old in this picture.

P’nut is walking in her University graduation today. Though she really finished school last December, this is when they do the cap and gown thing. That made me look back at her life so far, and all the animals that I brought into it. I think that raising children around animals is a wonderful and loving lesson. Because I chose to share my life with all these critters, so did P’nut. Since the moment she arrived she was surrounded by fur.
Cats: Rosie, Gertrude, Alice. Exit Rosie, enter Cuddles, Zackary, and The Muffin Man. Exit Alice, then Gertrude, and enter Miss Constance Kitty and Noel. Exit Zackary, Kitty, and Muffin, and enter Nine and Stella. Exit Cuddles and enter Mini Cooper. And there is also Aunt B’s cat (that we rescued and drove from Maryland to NY), Jazzy, and P’nuts many feral cats from her year in Israel, especially Soshanna. Every feline teaching different lessons about independence, affection, and silliness. Cats definitely teach patience, I think.
Dogs: Nikkolette (Nikki) and Squash E Bear. Exit Nikki and enter Louise. Exit Squash and enter Sofie Bear. Each dog teaching endless lessons in unconditional love. Also another big influence in her life was Socki, Tante Judy’s canine companion, who taught us that dogs can be amazing helpers. I think the dogs taught her responsibility for something other than one’s self.
Horses: From Honey, her first pony, to Sport, and the many other leased horses over the years whose names I forget, this girl loved to ride. I am remembering one major fall she took off of a horse named Cinnamon. I sat and watched the horse refuse the jump and P’nut’s 10 year old self fly through the air into the sand (she was OK, just bruised). I know it is a cliche but, she learned the age old lesson of getting back on the horse after you fall off. I think the horses also taught her confidence, bravery, and humility.
Guinea pigs: (I just realized I forgot to include the Guinea pigs in the collage – I am so sorry little ones.) First there was Sam. Exit Sam enter Georgia and Mr. Moto and their babies, Bubba, Checkers, and Mo Jr. and then the foster, Samore. Learning that rodents can be sweet and funny furbabies, even when they pee on you, teaches one that things don’t always turn out as you planned, but you can change your shirt and move on (I know she struggles with this one).

I can’t believe the years of hugs and cuddles, kisses and purrs. Happy college graduation ceremony day, Baby. From all your fur siblings over the years. ❤ ❤ ❤

For some strange reason, Peanut’s iphone uploaded old pictures of Sofie Bear, from when she was a puppy, back into a current photo album. Maybe the phone wanted us to remember those times, so I had her send them to me, and I made this Sofie puppy collage. Sofie was 5 years old last November. She was such a cute pup. It is easy to forget how tiny they were as puppies. The rescue thought she was a collie/shepard and about 12 weeks old, but now that we know she is a sheltie/mischief mix, she might have been a little older for her size. She was still all puppy! I am not so sure Louise knew what to make of this PEST for the first few months. Sofie followed her everywhere and wanted to be next to her or on her. Love love love love. Louise is so patient.

V moved the cat tree in the middle of the room. I don’t think they will ever let me move it back to the corner. They all love it where it is. Now if I can capture a shot with Nine in the tunnel, we will almost have a full set.
I cannot imagine a life without cats!

What do you think Nine and Sofie were discussing? I am sure it was something of great importance 🙂

Full moon on Christmas, how wonderful to light the way. May your day be merry and bright. All of us at DogDaz Zoo hope that this holiday season is bringing you joy. A little extra catnip and a new bone and Bobo does the trick around here. Happy Christmas!

Thank You Santa Paws!

I am a certifibly crazy pet parent, especially around feeding time: 6 animals – 7 different foods
The Food
Food 1 and 2: Louise, with her autoimmune issues, gets Hill’s prescription Z/D (wet and dry). She has been doing really well on it and sadly, I can not find any cheaper alternatives. I feed her in a ‘slow bowl,’ which really works too. (Thanks for the slow bowl idea, Eko.)
Food 3 and 4: Sofie, eats Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato (wet and dry). I used to feed it to both dogs before I found that Louise could not tolerate most foods. The dogs also get unsalted veggies with each meal, or pumpkin, depending on what I have in the pantry.
Food 5: Noel eats Friskies wet food. All the cats used to be on this but Nine and Stella started to dislike it (as well as most dry foods), so now only Noel is on it. Wet is my choice and I add a good amount of water. (Dr. L says they would normally eat 4 mice a day, which would be meat and water mostly, so that is what I try for.)
Food 6: Nine and Stella don’t like any wet anymore (no matter how hard I try), so they are on Solid Gold – Indigo dry.
Food 7: The baby, Mini Cooper (who is not a kitten anymore), is on Blue Healthy Gourmet pate (wet only). She does not like Friskies. I haven’t moved Noel to the Blue because it is very expensive and if I can save a few bucks…
The Process
I have feeding down to a science. I open all dog food cans. I make Louise’s food first because I want the fork to be free from contamination of other food. (Yes fork vs spoon, because Lulu’s food is very solid and it helps break it up more.) I mix the wet, dry, and veggies with water. She then licks the fork.
Then it is whinny Sofie’s turn. I mix her dry, wet, and veggies with water and then she licks the fork. Sometimes I make them sit and give them an extra veggie or 2.
I take their food to the dog mat, they say their prayers (really they do) and chow down.
Now that they are busy I move to the counter to feed the cats. I open the cat cans. Mini first because she is a huge pest if I don’t. Then Nine on the other side of the counter, followed by Noel, the patient, in her herb window. The cats have to eat ‘up’ to keep food away from dogs.
The dogs are still busy when I go down the hall to Stella’s room and feed her (she is behind closed doors all the time so she is easy).
Back to the kitchen to make sure Sofie does not cat bowl surf the counter (which she does) and that Mini and Noel don’t gang up on Nine, who is a slower eater, because they do. They sit there and stare him down if I don’t watch.
This routine may explain why it is really hard to get anyone else in the family to help at feeding time. I actually accomplish all this in a matter of minutes, but I have a plan (you have to have a plan at 5 am).
I don’t mind the different foods, it is just the cost that is killing me, and the need to shop at multiple pet stores because the foods are special and only sold at specific places (Z/D at a PetSmart with a Banfield Vet or at a Vet) and Natural Balance at Petco or a specialty store. But I got smart this month, I went on the internet and ordered things direct. Maybe that will make life a little less crazy around pet food.
Feeding time at the Zoo! Oh yeah, I repeat this again around 4:30 in the afternoon. No wonder I am always tired.

These two goofballs, Sofie and Mini Cooper, spent the day napping on Peanut’s bed, with Peanut in it. They love that someone is home who can lounge around all day in bed and cuddle. Ah, how wonderful to be a student on summer vacation. (Photos by Peanut)
What mischief did you get into today?

Louise is not really a cat cuddling dog. But that Mini Cooper! She can turn your heart in a second. I am just amazed how much Louise likes her and how close she lets her come. She doesn’t even like Sofie that close to her face. I am blown away by the magic spell that little cat has over all of us.
