I am helping V sweep the leaves off the deck. This is great fun. I lie here in this pile. Then I lie there in that pile. Why is V hitting me with the broom? What did I do? I just want to help move the crunchy brown leaves around.

Noel is not amused that Nine and Mini Cooper have discovered that Mommy puts an empty box on the dining room table for her. I wish that I could have caught a video last night when Noel was down low in the box, and the other 2 wanted to go in, not knowing she was there, and ‘POP’ she scared them both off the table (for a moment). They are just cracking us up.

Why is it so hot in October? Mom says we broke a heat record today. Maybe she should reopen the pool?

Do you tie knots in your leashes? Tying knots in my leashes helps me when walking the dogs. With 2 dogs, I do a dance with both leashes most of the time. I use 6 foot leads, of a good weight, and I tie a few knots in them (usually at 3 and 5 feet marks). When I drop a lead, which sometimes I do on purpose to free my hands and pick up ‘you know what,’ and sometimes it just happens, I am able to immediately step on the leash, and because the knot is there, it is less likely to run under the arch of my foot. And there are the times that one dog is closer than the other (which happens often with 2 on the left), so I choke up to the 3 foot knot and don’t have any drag on the ground (I hate muddy leads). It makes me feel like I have a bit more control when I am walking, though I know, if I really need a leash to walk the dogs, I don’t really have any control at all. The dogs humor me though.

Dear Mom –
I just want you to know that no matter what anyone says, you are the best Mom in the whole wide universe, I don’t mean to wake you up at 3 AM barking at nothing. Or chase the cats. Or whine endlessly while you are trying to go to sleep. It was not my fault that the loud noises over head with those light flashes made me so scared that I ate through the door to find shelter in the laundry room. I don’t like noises, Mom. They hurt my head and I want to attack them. I am really sensitive and I don’t like when you are not in the house with me. I stick to you, like thistles stick to my coat, because you make me feel calm and safe. It is not my fault that my brain is wired a little different than other beings. I have these terrible dreams at night and they wake me and make me want to attack the air. I need to always be sucking on something to calm my nerves. Thank you for all the toys, especially the catnip toys, that help me find comfort in every room. Together we can overcome anything, Mom. I am your fluffball, your ‘sodapop.’ I am your Sofie Bear and I know that you rescued me because we were meant to be together. I love you, Mom. I hope that my face shows you that everytime I look at you.

Shhhhh….don’t tell but….

Sometimes I think the dogs are telling each other little secrets that I am just not part of. They have their own sister language that does not include anyone else. Maybe they are planning how to break out of the yard by digging a hole under the fence (that would definitely by Sofie’s idea). Or they are planning a special surprise ambush of a cat or two when they return inside later that day (also a Sofie idea). Wait, maybe it is about hiding all the broken toys so that Mommy doesn’t find them (this would be a Louise idea).
Do dogs have secrets?
Can they be trusted to keep a secret?
Have you ever seen a dog on the front of one of the trashy magazines at the grocery store bragging about all the stupid and immature things that their celebrity owners did? No. Neither have I. Dogs must actually be really good at keeping secrets.Just imagine the headlines if some of those canine or felines (like the Royal Corgies in the Queen’s parlor) told the world what they really saw.
I trust my dogs with my deepest thoughts and I think they honor that…. unless, of course, someone pays them a lot of bones to spill the beans. BOL BOL BOL
