12.30.12 Black and White Sunday: First Snow Frolick

Louise enjoying the first snow of the season
2012

Sofie had never seen snow before (I guess we did not get much last year).  She was running around like a crazy dog.  When she finally calmed down, she just stood in the yard and looked on in amazement.  They had so much fun running around chasing each other until finally Louise decided she was cold and wanted to come in. I think Sofie would still be out there, if I let her.

12.29.12 Caturday: Catnip-apillars

9 catmas 2012

Santa Paws brought Noel, Stella and I, Catnip-apillars.  They are really cool and fun to play with.  They smell really strong.  Mom most have gone shopping for Santa Paws (we know he is busy and she is a very helpful person) because she tried to hide something that smelled a lot like this in her office and everywhere she put this one big gray bag, I found it and tried to get inside.  Finally, she put it in the linen closet, which has a big knob on the door so I can’t get in.  I bet she bought them for Santa Paws to give us.  Our Mom really knows how to pick toys.  Have a great Caturday – Nine, the DogDaz Mancat (do you like my new name for the New Year? Mommy says I am still just her Bullyboy).

12.28.12 Follow Up Friday: Thank You Santa Paws

xmas12It was a very busy week here at the DogDaz Zoo.  All the kids are home and we have many more beds to jump on and rooms to run it.  We also worked hard to get a lot more cuddles and pats on the head and treats…. lots of treats.  The family was very busy wrapping boxes and putting crinkly stuff in bags and we had fun helping.  Mommy told us that we had to be very good the night before Santa Paws came, because we were home by ourselves for a really long time and he would see. (Well sort of good because Mom doesn’t know that I have started to sneak on the big bed and lie on her pillows when she is out of the house: it smells like her and that makes me feel comfy. And since Mom didn’t know, and Sofie and the cats were sworn to secrecy, no one told Santa Paws, so I was in the clear.)  All the humans went to Grammie’s with all those boxes and bags.  But we saw that our stocking were still hanging, so Santa Paws was not going to forget us.  Then the humans got home and Mom put us to bed and in the morning we saw that Santa Paws had come sometime during the night.  By afternoon, the Bobos were NObos, and the bacon bones were history.  What a great week we had,  we hope your’s was special too. – Lulu Belle

12.27.12 Two Dogs At Every School Door

guard dogsAfter so  much sadness and confusion over the loss of innocent lives in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, the country has gone crazy coming up with ideas to try and make the schools and the malls and the movie theaters safer.  They have talked about gun control, giving teachers guns, taking guns away, banning assault rifles… and on and on and on.  The sad thing is that even if the there was a police officer in that school, he/she could have been on the other end of the building when this incident went down.  They say that he murdered the children in minutes.  So…. here is my thought on what to do:

We are watching, so be warned!!

We are watching, so be warned!!

I think that we should redeploy our Military Working Dogs (send a note to your Senator to pass the Canine Members of Armed Forces Act) at every school in the country.  A dog has an incredible sense of smell and hearing. They could pick up a suspicious sound way before an alarm system could.  They can move faster than any human.  They can alert a whole building or neighborhood quickly.  And, what if the dogs were trained to smell gun powder, or whatever it is that guns smell of?  If there were 2 working dogs at the entrance to the school, even if the crazy person shoot one dog, the other dog would chew his arm off before he could get another shot off.  And what if the second dog was trained to smell drugs of certain types.  Then anyone coming into the school zone with drugs would be detected.  This would ensure the true meaning of ‘A Drug Free School Zone.’  Ok, so I don’t have all the details worked out — like who takes the dogs home at night and who pays for the vet bills?  But, I sure would feel safer if I know that every school had a canine presence to detect and detain any human with suspicion of guns or drugs.

guard dog 2Now I need your thoughts on this.  I am not an animal trainer nor a police or military dog handler.  Is it plausible? Possible?  I will start this business tomorrow if it makes sense, but I am not trained in these things.  Are you?  Who can help me?  Would you feel safer if you knew that there were protection dogs at school with your kids all day?

People have told me that I should send this idea to the President.  I am not sure though.  I think there are a lot of details we need to work out first.  But, I know that we don’t always leverage the simpler solution.  I do not believe, at this point in our history, that we will be able to disarm all the crazy people, but at least we can have a simple, smart solution at every school to protect the kids and teachers.

Please, tell me what you think?

(Note:  (1) The pictures not of my dogs came from internet images of Guard Dogs, I do not own the rights to them.  (2) Please, do not steal my idea and go make money off of it.  That is not what this is about and by stating it here, it is my idea and I want to set up a non-profit to make this happen, if viable. (I’m sorry I just felt I needed to say that.))
