1.1.13 Carpe Diem: 2013 Pick of the Litter Awards
I tried to wake the animals up to review the year before we move on to 2013, but they said to leave them alone.
My motto for 2013 is “Carpe Diem,” “Sieze the day!” I want to focus on each days wonders and dig deep into making every moment count. If not now, when? If not me, who?
Here is a recap of DogDaz month by month for 2012 before we move on:
January – At that point the blog was only 60 days new. The Muffin Man turned 18 or 19 (we never really knew his age).
February – Stella and Nine joined the family. Everyone was really excited. Nine was about 1 and Stella was 5 months old.
March – The dogs dug up the yard (for the first time) to free the mole Spring was definitely in the air (and under ground). Noel, the Christmas Cat, was 5. Mom was 55.
April – The kittens are fitting in really well…. maybe to well. Nine is taking over the world.
May – Louise is growing up and does a great job on the blog while Mom travels The dogs learned to sit pretty for spring pictures.
June – We highlighted the street animals of Istanbul, Turkey from Mom’s trip. Peanut graduated High School, so the dogs got to be in lots of prom pictures.
July – The dogs and cats took turns writing the blog while Mom was in Australia and had great fun when she returned. Stella turned 1. Peanut turned 18.
August – The true DogDaz of summer were upon us. Change was in the air. Constance was 5.
September – Peanut (the little little human) went off to college and we were all trying to get used to an empty nest.
October – Noel took over as top cat., we get hit with SuperStormSandy and Louise (aka Lulu Belle), turned 3.
November – Sofie turned 2 and the blog turned 1.
December – The Muffin Man and Miss Constance Kitty passed over the rainbow bridge to the great meadow. K8 (the middle little human) graduated from college and came home to stay (bye bye empty nest) – the animals (especially Stella) like having her to play with again.

12.27.12 Two Dogs At Every School Door
After so much sadness and confusion over the loss of innocent lives in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, the country has gone crazy coming up with ideas to try and make the schools and the malls and the movie theaters safer. They have talked about gun control, giving teachers guns, taking guns away, banning assault rifles… and on and on and on. The sad thing is that even if the there was a police officer in that school, he/she could have been on the other end of the building when this incident went down. They say that he murdered the children in minutes. So…. here is my thought on what to do:
I think that we should redeploy our Military Working Dogs (send a note to your Senator to pass the Canine Members of Armed Forces Act) at every school in the country. A dog has an incredible sense of smell and hearing. They could pick up a suspicious sound way before an alarm system could. They can move faster than any human. They can alert a whole building or neighborhood quickly. And, what if the dogs were trained to smell gun powder, or whatever it is that guns smell of? If there were 2 working dogs at the entrance to the school, even if the crazy person shoot one dog, the other dog would chew his arm off before he could get another shot off. And what if the second dog was trained to smell drugs of certain types. Then anyone coming into the school zone with drugs would be detected. This would ensure the true meaning of ‘A Drug Free School Zone.’ Ok, so I don’t have all the details worked out — like who takes the dogs home at night and who pays for the vet bills? But, I sure would feel safer if I know that every school had a canine presence to detect and detain any human with suspicion of guns or drugs.
Now I need your thoughts on this. I am not an animal trainer nor a police or military dog handler. Is it plausible? Possible? I will start this business tomorrow if it makes sense, but I am not trained in these things. Are you? Who can help me? Would you feel safer if you knew that there were protection dogs at school with your kids all day?
People have told me that I should send this idea to the President. I am not sure though. I think there are a lot of details we need to work out first. But, I know that we don’t always leverage the simpler solution. I do not believe, at this point in our history, that we will be able to disarm all the crazy people, but at least we can have a simple, smart solution at every school to protect the kids and teachers.
Please, tell me what you think?
(Note: (1) The pictures not of my dogs came from internet images of Guard Dogs, I do not own the rights to them. (2) Please, do not steal my idea and go make money off of it. That is not what this is about and by stating it here, it is my idea and I want to set up a non-profit to make this happen, if viable. (I’m sorry I just felt I needed to say that.))
