This week, in the Northern Hemisphere, autumn begins for real. It has been feeling like autumn for many days with the cool nights and the leaves falling to the ground. Thursday, September 22 the autumnal equinox* will make it really autumn even though to meteorologists, meteorological fall started on September 1. This is all very confusing but Mom says it is the bestest season of all 4 (Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring) and we are taking full advantage everyday.
*At this point, the Earth’s tilt is moving away from its maximum lean toward the Sun; its rays are aiming directly at the equator.
What kind of mischief did you get into today?

There is nothing more enjoyable than a fall day on the deck.

Even Nine and Mini want to get in on the action from inside.
Happy Autumn!

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy, and if it were merely challenging that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” – E.B. White
I know exactly what White meant when he said this. In the beauty of the autumn days, it is almost impossible to concentrate on the tasks at hand and not just want to grab a leash, some water, and a day pack and head out into the woods or along the river. It is on days like this, when the air is crisp and cool but not yet cold, when the sky is bluer than blue and the clouds hang in the distance like fluffs of cotton that were placed there just for my observation, that I am forced, by my thirst for connection to mother earth and all her creations, that I stop saving the world and just bask in the gift of the day.
Anticipation of the colors that will come in the next few weeks from the changing season brings me great happiness. The reds, yellows, and oranges of the changing Maples, Oaks, Elms, and SweetGum. On our walks, the acorns and large nuts are falling in large numbers on our heads. I kept thinking that the Squirrels were aiming for us, but I realized it was just… fall. Are you familiar with the ‘GumBalls’ that drop from the SweetGum? They are prickly and roll underfoot. On many a walk, because I tend to be looking everywhere else but down at my feet, I have ended up flat on the ground after stepping on one of those silly balls. I always laugh when that happens, because the dogs come to me as to say, “Mom, Mom, are you Ok? What are you doing down here?”
What an incredible opportunity the change of the seasons provides us in understanding the cycle of life and the importance of change. The having to say goodbye to things, like butterflies and hummingbirds, that will make their way to Mexico or Panama, or some other nice warm southern spot to winter and reproduce, and say hello to the wild swans and the geese, coming down from the Yukon or somewhere in Canada to winter on my Chesapeake Bay.
Fall for me is the time to take stock of myself, my world, and my place in it. It is a time to regroup and prepare for the ‘going in’ of winter. To clear my slate, with humans and with nature, for any wrongs I have transgressed in the previous months, and to start fresh for a whole new year. Today I will enjoy the world – tomorrow I will get back to saving it.

Mom: It’s the Autumnal Equinox. That means the day is as long as the night. Now the northern hemisphere is shifting into darkness.
Noel: Can I eat it?
Nine: Why do I care?
Mini: Will you pet me more?
Mom: You cats are just ridiculous!
Happy Fall to all our friends from DogDaz CATS2 Zoo.
I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Fall has arrived, The pool is closed and the foliage is turning brown. The days are getting shorter and the weather is perfectly perfect. The Autumnal Equinox is upon us.
As the season’s change, I wonder how the environmental cues affect domestic animals. Since we live in an environment with artificial light, and heat, and cooling, how much of the seasonal changes really affect humans or pets? The dogs are absolutely friskier in the fall and the spring. I don’t know why, but they are. Sofie’s nose changes color between winter and summer (she has what is called Snow Nose- you can read about it here) and her coat gets darker too. Other than that, I don’t think they’re affected much.
How does the change of seasons affect you and your furbabies?

Tomorrow (September 22) at 10:21 am EDT it will officially be Autumn for us (the Autumnal Equinox). How can that have happened already? Wasn’t it just spring? There is nothing more incredible than the changing of the seasons. Mom loves autumn best of all. She loves the crisper days, and the fall tones of orange, yellow, brown and red. As the plants end their growth cycles and creatures go south or under ground, it makes us aware of the renewal that will come on the other side of winter. Sofie and I are both born in fall. Maybe that is why Mom loves this season so much? I was born on Halloween and Sofie on Thanksgiving (or at least that is what Mom tells us). As we kiss summer good bye, we say thank you to the earth for the wonderful colors, warm waters, butterflies and birds. Bye Bye, Summer. – Love, Louise
Have a wonderful Wednesday.
