“Oy Vey” means “Woe is me!”
You won’t believe this, but Mom has left on an airplane again. This time she has gone to Israel to visit Peanut at University. Peanut has been gone a long, long time (Mom says since August) though we hear Mom talking to her on the computer, we don’t smell her around here much anymore.
We are going to Sonya’s for a nice little vacation until Mom gets back. Peanut says there are millions and millions of feral cats in Israel and she is taking care of many of them at school. Mom is looking forward to meeting them and taking pictures, but she especially looking forward to hugging her baby – for a very long time.

Here is one of the Israeli cats that Peanut sent a picture of. We do hope Mom leaves them all there because we have enough animals to deal with at the zoo.
You know Mom checks the blog wherever in the world she is, so don’t go anywhere. She will do her best to respond to your comments as quickly as she can (if she ever takes a break from hugging Peanut).

Lulu wants OUT!

Lulu wants IN!
I don’t know about you, but when the wind chill hit minus 13 fahrenheit, I was just not going for a long walk. But Louise was just not OK with that thought. I got all geared up and walked them around the yard to try to appease her, but she keep asking “when are we going for a walk, Mom?” Sofie however, did not want anything to do with the frigid temperatures outside. Louise most have gone in and out the door 100 times. So much so that the room dropped from it’s usually daily temperature of 62 to 59. (Yes, we keep the house really cold, but heat is expensive and we bundle up.)
I wonder what Nine and Sofie are discussing in the bottom shot? Any caption ideas ? Knowing Nine he is trying to convince Sofie to jam the door so that he can make a run for it outside. Little does he know how good 62 degrees feels.

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog. This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that). But today, I am going to rant about the last 6 months, if that is ok with you?
There is so much to follow-up with since I have been back from China in late November. I have kind of lost my posting rhythm that I had for the last 2 years. Life has really been a whirlwind since last summer when I
got laid off retired. When I was working full-time I had my days neatly planned and the blogs both were on the publishing schedule as part of my day. DogDaz was a post-a-day with universal animal pictures and a post-a-day with personal zoo stories.
My business blog was twice a week. But that has all changed. I am lucky if I can get once a month with my business blog. And DogDaz, well I have been able to keep up the post-a-day pictures, but the personal stuff has been limited mostly to blog hops. I miss the routine and am trying hard to regain it, but sometimes, it just takes time to control chaos. I still reply to every comment that people write me, but it has become incredibly hard to visit all my blog friends like I want to. That makes me frustrated and sad, but I need to focus on different things now (like closing business).

The dogs and I have been through a lot over the last few months. Louise as you might recall was being treated for Perianal Fistula Disease. She was on heavy-duty medication in October and November and appears to have gone into remission (Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah). I took them both for their annual check up 2 weeks ago and everything seemed fine with her. But…. on Monday I noticed a very large bump around Louise’s shoulder. Freaked me out. I am thinking Lyphoma from all the toxins she had from the medicine, or something worse. Rushed her to vet. Dr Kate said it is a Granulomas reaction to all the vaccines she was given a few weeks ago. Oh my! Have any of you had this type of reaction in your dogs? It is hard tissue that forms when the body is trying to reject a foreign substance (like a vaccine). Dr. Kate said warm compress and it will go away in a few weeks. Hope so. It doesn’t seem to bother Lulu, thank goodness. She is only 4, which is to young for all this sicky stuff. Would you discontinue vaccines?

I don’t know if I have blogged about Sofie’s increased obsessive behavior. Barking at every sound, having to gnaw on something constantly (including herself). Dr, Kate says she is a herding bred and needs a job. Great! I need a job too! That doesn’t mean I gnaw on my arm (well maybe). She has been diagnosed with
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I guess I have to find a flock of sheep and get her herding. But it is minus 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside so I am not going to be able to sheep herd anytime soon. I am trying to keep her busy (actually both of them) in the house and I bought her a ‘Thunder Shirt’ (she is wearing it in this picture) to try to calm her from the sounds of life and to also make her feel more secure. Has anyone tried a shirt for OCD? When do you put it on? Did it help your dog?
My theme for 2014 is ‘Controlling Chaos.’ That seems to be my life right now. Managing the development of my business while maintaining my sanity with my zoo, my family, and my health. My health is stress stress stress, so I really need to change that..Ah, but this is a blog about the animals, not about me, so I will leave complaining for another day.
Lulu is poking me and wants to go out in the freeze. Please take a moment and accept this invitation to a snowball fight!
We are back!
The cats seem to be doing ok right now, thank goodness! Noel started to come out into the living room and interact much more with K8 and V while I was in China. She has continued to do that now that I am home and it is a good thing. I do miss her in my office with me when I am there (like now), but her new place appears to be on the kitchen chair, under the table, where I put a blanket for her before I left to keep her warm. That is her home now and it gives her more ability to watch the world then she used to have.
That is Noel looking up from the kitchen chair (with her blanket) and wedged against the kitchen table. She is just cracking us up these days.
That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us. Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.

K8 caught this shot of Sofie waiting on the other side of the laundry room cat door. No wonder the cats hide.
(Oh, yes, duct tape is my answer to every thing that needs fixing around the house.)

Frostbite in Dogs from VAC Animal Hospitals
What is frostbite?
Frostbite or congelatio in medical terminology [next step] is the damage that is caused to skin and other tissues due to extreme cold. When the environmental temperature drops below 32°F (0°C), blood vessels close to the skin start to narrow or constrict. This constriction of the blood vessels helps to preserve core body temperature by diverting blood toward the core and away from the cooler parts of the body. In extreme cold or when the body is exposed to cold for long periods, this protective mechanism can reduce blood flow in some areas of the body, especially the extremities, to critically low levels. The combination of cold temperature and reduced blood flow can allow the tissues to freeze, causing severe tissue injury. Frostbite is most likely to happen in body parts farthest from the heart and in tissues with a lot of exposed surface area.
Where is a dog more likely to get frostbite? The paws, ears and tail are the most common tissues to be affected. If a dog is wet or damp, these areas are more vulnerable to frostbite.
What are the clinical signs of frostbite?
The clinical signs associated with frostbite include:
- Discoloration of the affected area of skin – this discoloration is often pale, gray or bluish
- Coldness and/or brittleness of the area when touched
- Pain when you touch the body part(s)
- Swelling of the affected area(s)
- Blisters or skin ulcers
- Areas of blackened or dead skin
As frostbitten tissues thaw, they may become red and very painful due to inflammation.
“The clinical signs of frostbite may take several days to appear…”
The clinical signs of frostbite may take several days to appear, especially if the affected area is small or non-weight bearing (such as the tip of the tail or ears). Severely frostbitten areas will become necrotic or die. As the tissue starts to die, it changes to a dark blue to black color; then, over a period of several days to weeks, it sloughs or falls off. During this time, pus may form or the tissue may develop a foul smell, due to secondary bacterial infection.
Dogs with heart disease, diabetes mellitus or other conditions that cause reduced blood flow to the extremities are at greater risk for frostbite.
How is frostbite diagnosed?
Diagnosis is usually based on the medical history and physical examination. If the dog was exposed for a prolonged time or to extremely cold temperatures, blood and urine tests may be performed to look for damage to internal organs.
How is frostbite treated?
If you suspect your dog has frostbite, you should seek medical attention immediately. Interim first aid suggestions that you can begin include:
- Move your dog to a warm, dry area as quickly and as safely as possible.
- If your dog is suffering from hypothermia or low core body temperature, treat the hypothermia first. Do this slowly by wrapping its body in warm dry towels or blankets and placing hot water bottles wrapped in towels near its body.
- DO NOT rub or massage the affected area.
- If you are outdoors, DO NOT warm a frostbitten area if you cannot keep it warm. Additional cold exposure or refreezing will more severely injure the tissues.
- You may carefully warm the affected area with warm (NOT HOT) water. The recommended water temperature is 104 to 108°F (40 to 42°C) – at this temperature, you should be able to comfortably place your hand in the warm water. If the water is too hot, you may cause more damage than not using any water at all. You may apply warm water compresses or soak the affected area in a bowl of warm water. DO NOT use direct dry heat such as a heating pad or hair dryer.
- After you have warmed the area, pat it dry carefully and thoroughly.
- While traveling to the veterinarian for further medical treatment, keep your dog warm by wrapping the pet in dry towels or blankets that have been warmed in the clothes dryer.
- DO NOT give any pain medication unless specifically instructed by your veterinarian. Many human pain relievers, including acetaminophen and aspirin can be toxic to pets.
How will my veterinarian treat frostbite?
Your veterinarian will examine your dog and treat any other conditions, especially systemic shock or hypothermia. Since the thawing tissues are extremely painful, your dog will probably be given pain medication. Antibiotics are used to prevent secondary bacterial skin infection if tissue necrosis or death is suspected. Some dogs will require amputation of a severely affected body part.
What is the prognosis for frostbite?
The prognosis for frostbite depends on the extent of your dog’s injuries. Mild cases of frostbite usually resolve with little permanent damage while more severe frostbite may result in permanent disfiguration or alteration of the affected tissues. In extreme cases, amputation or surgical removal of the necrotic tissues is required. Your veterinarian will discuss the appropriate diagnostic and treatment plan for your dog.

Mom got me a Gorilla and Sofie a Froggy for Xmas but I liked the Froggy better. Especially since Sofie and I ripped the Goriila’s arms off in like 2 seconds. Mom doesn’t usually buy us such expensive toys but these 2 nice ladies in the pet store were saying how much their dog loved these particular ones. They had sound boxes in them which were great for about 20 minutes and then they died (because I crushed them with my teeth). All the stuffing was gone in about 30 minutes after Sofie and I throw it all over the living room. I was really tired after ripping up all these new things that I need to take a nap with Froggy. I really like when I get all these new things to play with. – Louise
