Caturday: Gertrude, the Fluffy

Gertrude was my wonderful long haired calico.  She and I had a very close relationship for over 17 years.  She passed over the bridge in 2007.  I miss her quiet, funny way.  I don’t have any long hairs in the zoo currently.

K8 took this picture when she was learning photography in high school.  It was a real dark room development project.  I just love it.

I can not imagine a life without cats. Happy Caturday.

Follow Up Friday: Home Again, Home Again, Giggity Gig

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

Noel waiting

Mommy, Is that you ?

Peanut and I got home on Tuesday; me from visiting her in Israel, she now visiting me (or at least her friends) for a few weeks until school starts again.  It was a great trip.  I have not been there since 1966.  The country has changed a great deal since then.

I sure missed the doggies this trip.  There were dozens of cats around but not many dogs.  It is interesting the different energy that there is when you are surrounded by wild cats vs wild dogs.  I guess I just don’t worry so much that a cat is going to bite my head off.

Noel (above) was waiting patiently for us to arrive.  She has taken to my office again while I was gone.  She did not spend much time in there when I was in China so I was glad to know she is back in her pink bed.

While away, I featured the many animals of Israel: the cats of Jerusalem, the animals of the biblical zoo, the birds of Masada, the goats of the Judean desert, and of course, more cats of Jerusalem. Now that I am home I will start to focus on the DogDaz zoo again.  The cats have had the run of the place since the dogs were at Sonya’s, so they are a little miffed that the dogs are back. It is always interesting to watch the dynamic change when I and the dogs return and we turn the house upside down with our noise and our playing.

We’re back!

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.  Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.

DogDaz Zoo from Jerusalem: More Cats

We arrived home today after 15 hours of flying around.  It is so nice to be home to my own zoo and I am really looking forward to sleeping in my bed.  Before I turn in, I thought I would share some more cats from my trip to Jerusalem.  If you have not seen the previous cat post this week please check it out – an incredible 2 million cats and I would like to take pictures of every one of them.

DogDaz Zoo from Jerusalem: The City of Cats

Shoshannah

Meet Shoshannah.  She is the little feral kitty that Peanut adopted at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, where she attends school. Shoshannah is about 6 months old and lives in the yard outside Peanut’s building along with tons of other cats. The students are told to not feed or interact with the cats, but how can you leave them  alone when they crawl all over you when studying outside and meow sweetly for attention.

If you have not been to Jerusalem, then you are probably not aware of the massive cat problem that they have. “Cats were not prominent in Israel’s streets until the 1930s, when they were brought in to help eradicate a rat problem, but this decision ultimately caused a “cat infestation” in and of itself. No one knows exactly how many of the street cats live in Israel now, but estimates say about 2 million, according to Meow Mission.”

Everywhere you turn, under every bush, in the buildings, in the streets, there are cats.

It is always amazing how we humans try to solve one problem and just create another. I never knew that Jerusalem was the city of cats.  There is a very nice site on Tumblr that has lots of pictures of the Jerusalem City Cats, if you would like to see more.

There are all varieties of cats – long and short hair, calico, tortoiseshell, gingers… it is sad that there are so many homeless kitties, but at the same time, very neat to see how the people have rallied to try to feed and care for them (at least at Peanut’s school).

Do you know of other cities with cat problems?  This is on a scale that I never thought of before.

Oy Vey! She’s Gone Again!

Oy Vey

“Oy Vey” means “Woe is me!”

You won’t believe this, but Mom has left on an airplane again.  This time she has gone to Israel to visit Peanut at University.  Peanut has been gone a long, long time (Mom says since August) though we hear Mom talking to her on the computer, we don’t smell her around here much anymore.

We are going to Sonya’s for a nice little vacation until Mom gets back.  Peanut says there are millions and millions of feral cats in Israel and she is taking care of many of them at school.  Mom is looking forward to meeting them and taking pictures, but she especially looking forward to hugging her baby – for a very long time.

Israeli

Here is one of the Israeli cats that Peanut sent a picture of.  We do hope Mom leaves them all there because we have enough animals to deal with at the zoo.

You know Mom checks the blog wherever in the world she is, so don’t go anywhere.   She will do her best to respond to your comments as quickly as she can (if she ever takes a break from hugging Peanut).
