3.22.13 Follow Up Friday: Cakes and Closed Doors

What a week it has been.  The animals, and humans, gave me the best birthday ever.  We ate a lot.  Played a lot.  And cuddled much.  That was perfect.  Thank you all for the sweet birthday wishes.  That was so nice.

winter walk 1I am glad to say that I am back to walking my mile with the dogs, even though it hurts.  I am trying to accept that maybe, from now on, my knees are just going to be a constant reminder that I am alive.  As long as the pain can stay on the nagging side and not the screaming side, I guess I will have to learn to deal.  At least no surgery! Louise and Sofie are so happy to be back on the road with me.  And we even are walking with Mojo rising occasionally (Louise’s boyfriend from next door).

Peanut left last Sunday to go back to school, so of course, Nine ended up locked in her room one night this week mysteriously.  I swear that cats can teleport through closed doors, but it seems they can only go one way; they do not seem to be able to teleport out.  He was around for dinner and snack, but V found him in the morning frantic.  We did not hear a peep all night though.  I do wonder what he destroyed in there (sorry Peanut, I will go check).

Many blog friends were worried that Noel would hurt Sofie with her menacing glare.  Let me assure you everything is all right.  We have never had a cat to dog fight in this house.  Only cat to cat.  Noel could do some damage if she were to get angry, so I never want to cross her.

2013-03-17_13-32-09_8Weather has been crazy but we are going down to the water more and more.  The Osprey have returned and their nest is up and ready for the family.  Amazing.  I just read an article that the Bald Eagle population of Maryland has grown tremendously in the area.  I haven’t seen any by me yet sadly, and I am wondering if maybe the Osprey keep them away.  They sure don’t keep the Turkey Vultures away (wish they did).

Baby Girl croppedBaby Stella has fallen in love with K8 and won’t leave her alone.  She is in her room all the time now.  I think she needs to be separate from her brother Nine, to have any chance at a voice. She did a great job of playing tag on Thursday with Little Binky of AngelWhisper.

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.

3.19.13 What Sofie Hears

2013-03-17_08-19-36_811

Last night the dogs and I went to bed around 10:00PM (22:00).  They went into their kennels, as usual on the other side of my bedroom, and I went to sleep.  I nodded off around 11:11, because I remember seeing the digital display on the TV.  The next thing I knew it was 11:26 and Sofie is whining and barking her head off.  I opened the kennels and let them both out in the back yard, at which point I heard the screeching of either a fox or a raccoon.  Sofie’s hearing is amazing.  I didn’t hear anything until I opened the door, but she was woken by the sound through the exterior wall, through the cover on the kennel.  When I got them back in and thanked them for making sure our home was safe, we all went back to bed.  Then about 4:30 AM she started the whine again, “Let me out and let me at it!”  This time, I ignored her and finally she quieted. (This is one of the reasons not to have your animals sleep in your bedroom, but I digress.)  I don’t want to discourage either of my dogs  from doing their job of protecting the house and family from intruders, but Sofie can hear a fox two towns away (OK, I am exaggerating, but only a little).  Her hearing sensitivity is much more acute than Louise or any other dog I have ever had.   At least I am assuming it is hearing and not smell.  Do I try to train her out of making any noise when she is in her kennel?  She only fusses when she either has to go to the bathroom or there is something like this going on outside the house.  She is a hyper-sound sensitive dog and I am trying to figure out how to instruct her when it is OK to bark and when it isn’t.  Or is this a losing battle?

I definitely am losing the whine battle.  Check out an older post “Would You Like Some Cheese With That Whine” .

3.1.13 Follow-Up Friday: Almost There & A Chair

winter walk 1Following up on Monday Mischief, the dogs and I have started to walk a little again.  Recovery is about 50% there, if I don’t screw it up.  I tend to try and do to much to soon, because I am impatient.  I see the surgeon next week, so we will see what he thinks.  I am walking the girls further and further every day.  We are all really happy to be getting back to ‘normal,’ especially with spring coming.  I haven’t tried to walk down to the water since last month when I had trouble getting back up the hill and started to cry.  Maybe soon though.

Louise on her chair

Louise on her chair

In response to the Wordless Wednesday post on Louise hanging off her office chair, everyone said that I need to go out and get her a dog bed, bean bag, coach, or (my favorite from Cupcake) a Barkolounger.  WunderButt offer us his chair, which was very nice.   This weekend I definitely need to see what the options are.  I think she will still hop up in her chair most of the time because she likes to be up at my level but thank your all for the suggestions.

People were in love with the little Munchkin kitty that I posted a GIF of on Wednesday.    They are like a corgi kitty: little legs with a big heart.  Peanut turned me on to this newly created breed of cat that was noticed around 1983.  The history can be found on Wikipedia – Munchkin Cat.

I can’t believe today is the first of March.  That means 20 days until Northern Spring!  Yahoo!!!!  Birds have been flocking to the feeders and the bird bath.

2.26.13 Don’t Allow Breed Discrimination

There has been a great deal of discussion lately about breed discrimination.  In Maryland, where I live, there is deep discrimination against pit bulls and mixes that look like pit bulls.  Last year, the Court of Appeals (that is our highest state court), passed a ruling that said that all Pit Bull dogs are ‘inherently dangerous.’ On top of that they said that Landlords would be held responsible if anyone who they rent to has a Pit Bull dog and it bites someone.  This is out and out breed discrimination.

The ruling stemmed from a dog bite inflicted on a child by a dog who lived his life on a chain and was not adequately socialized.  How sad for all involved.  A 10 year old child and his family were traumatized, which is terrible.  But the family did not just sue the owner, they also sued the Landlord (a 92 year old woman who happened to die before the case was finished).  The Maryland Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the boy’s family and against the Landlord, saying that the Landlord was responsible because she should have known that there was a pit bull on her property, and that all pit bulls are inherently dangerous.  I am sorry but all dogs, especially if they are tied up have the potential to bite.

kissing pitsYou may wonder what all this means, so let me try to explain.  Let’s say I had three dogs: Louise (hound/lab), Sofie (sheltie/corgie), and Sweet Pea (a Pit Bull).  If someone broke in to my house and Louise attached them, the person that broke in would be at fault for being on my property.  But, if Sweet Pea bit them, I would be at fault for owning a Pit Bull.  Not only would I be at fault but if I was a renter, my Landlord could be sued because I have a Pit Bull.

Shelters are filling up with any dog that even looks like a Pit and they are having a really hard time getting them adopted out.  Insurance companies are refusing to insure people with Pit Bull dogs.   Last week, Maryland Sen. Brian Frosh (D-Montgomery County) pushed a bill that would counteract the anti-pit bull court ruling, the Capital Gazette reports. The House unanimously approved the bill so it heads to the Senate next.

I do hope that breed discrimination in Maryland does not become the law of the land.  What would you do if all of a sudden your dog was deemed ‘inherently dangerous,’ and your Landlord said the dog had to go?

Sometimes people ask me if Louise is a Pit Bull – I don’t know what I would do if someone tried to take her away (I think I might bite them (I believe humans are inherently dangerous)).
