Please Send Prayers For Louise
Warning: This post may be a little graphic for weak stomachs.
Remember a few month’s ago I told you that I thought Louise had squatted on a rose-bush or something and cut her behind? She was on antibiotics and I thought it healed. Well the other day I noticed not only one cut but multiple and an abscess on her anus.
I am very upset to report that Louise has been diagnosed with Perianal Fistula Disease. This is a serious condition and I am very worried about her.
A perianal fistula is a severe lesion that develops around a dog’s anus. A fistula is an abnormal pathway from something inside the body to the surface of the body. “Perianal” simply means the area around the anus.
In perianal fistula disease, there is often more than one lesion. The result is chronic, persistent draining ulcers that are very painful for the dog.
Perianal fistula disease is also known as anal furunculosis.
The vet says that they are not sure but think this disease is auto-immune (it just is, she did not catch it from something or someone). There appears to be some genetic basis, especially in German Shepherds who are predisposed to this condition. Approximately 80% of the dogs affected are German Shepards and most are male. (Louise is neither a German Shepard nor male, but…)
From what I am reading, they use to think the problem was related to how the dog carried its tail and the presence of a type of sweat gland that produces a stinky oily sweat in the anal area (common in German Shepard). Some articles said that they cut off the dog’s tail to try to treat this – but that does not seem to be suggested today. (The Pet Health Library)
Lulu is being treated now with a heavy antibiotic, then we will move to a cyclosporine, and ultimately, if we have to, prednisone. This is not going away but maybe we can make it so unremarkable, it will not hurt her.
She is OK, but I am concerned about long term drug treatment on a 3 1/2 year old dog. I pray that we caught this early and she will respond well. Right now, I am just trying to keep her from the constant butt licking (and Sofie nosing her – which she never did until recently.)
Please light a candle that she does well on the treatment.
Have any of you ever had a dog with this problem and what have you done about it?

Black and White Sunday: 9 and the Head
Last Christmas, V bought me 3 matching head sculptures (don’t ask). They sit in the middle of the table. I turn their faces away from view because they creep me out (Bwaahahahaha). Nine likes to lie with them. Hence the title of today’s post.

Follow Up Friday: Queens & Dons & More Queens
Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog. This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).
Another flat-out running to the finish line week. I have started walking the dogs twice a day if I can, so that they and I get some rest (funny to think of walking dogs as restful, but for me it truly is my heaven).

Last Caturday, Noel was being the royal girl that she is. Someone noticed she was giving the ‘down’ signal with her paw. I guess no one got their head cut off so we made it through the royal cat viewing. She really is the boss around here.
Louise, showed her Italian side on Monday Mischief (no offense to that part of the family). No one ended up “sleeping with the fishes,” so again, we survived the test.
I see a pattern here that was never intended. Do you?
We highlighted a wonderful 12-year-old named Kitty on Tuesday’s Tails. It is getting really hard each week to watch all these senior animals be taken into the shelter and struggle to find new homes. Please adopt a senior, if you can.
We were definitely looking for words on Wordless Wednesday to describe poor little Sofie sticking her head over the windowsill trying to see me as I was leaving. Sometimes Louise is there too, but you can’t see her because she is black and the camera just does not pick her up. If only you could hear Sofie, whine whine whine. “Mommy, oh, you are leaving me!” What a drama queen. I guess she an Noel will have to battle for the crown this week. You can just make out her ear, eye, and nose in the air. BOL
We are very Thankful Thursday, for all food, but especially for COOKIES!!! Everyone around the zoo loves their treats. Sofie is a chewer and Louise is a goobler. But, most of the time Louise waits and then cleans up Sofie’s crumbs (of which there are many).
Where did that week go? Hope your’s was royal and good fun.

Wordless Wednesday: Can I Come Too?
Sofie can just about see over the kitchen window on her tippy toes, to watch me get in the car. BOL!
Got a good caption anyone?

Monday Mischief: Louise, the Enforcer
If Louise was in the Mafia….
“This is my Mommy and I am going to make sure that you understand that.”
You get what I am saying to you?
No one touches my Mama! Except me.

8.16.13 Follow Up Friday: Fuzzy, Crabby, and Delicious
Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog. This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).
As Indian Winter (see last week’s FUF if you want explanation) continues this summer, here in the Mid-Atlantic, we are having some wonderful fall weather. We have had the windows open almost every day this week (except when it was raining). I even had a sweatshirt on this morning out with the dogs. But, it is August. This is unheard of. I am not complaining, but are we going to have summer in October?
Last Caturday, no one told me I had the wrong date on my post (it said 8.3.13 instead of 8.10.13). You most have all thought I was a week behind. Hahahahha. Nine had his tail in the planter’s hands. It was a purrffect tail aid.
Black and White Sunday was a fuzzy focused walk in the park with the girls, Louise and Sofie. I liked the fuzzy effect (actually I did not even realize I did that), but some people didn’t like it. Oh well. Here is a picture from the same series but in color.
Mischief Monday found us down at the docks checking to see what was in the crab pots. Nothing.
On Tuesday’s Tails, we featured a beautiful green-eyed senior kitty named Betty. Everyone loved her eyes, her sour expression, and wished her a speedy new home.
Louise showed you her new pink flying thingie on Wordless Wednesday. She keeps wanted to play tug with it, instead of toss (tug being her favorite game). Sofie steals it and takes it under a tree, and then you know the rest….
And, Thankful Thursday, I grabbed a great old shot of Muffin laying on tomatoes from our garden. The first crop is in, and I just love that picture. Really miss that Muffin Man.
That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us. Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.
