The story that we were told by the rescue:
- They got a call from a Deacon of a church that a woman’s husband died and he had 4 small dogs in a kennel that she wanted nothing to do with.
- The only dog that had been spayed or neutered was Jolie.
- The woman gave away one of the dogs (to her grandmother?). The other 3 were taken into foster in February of this year.
- They said she was a Yorkie mix on the paperwork. (She looks much more like a Shih Tzu than a Yorkie, but clearly, she is a mix of things (aren’t we all).)
- They were supposedly allowed out of the kennel once a day. They were covered with urine and feces when they were rescued, so my assumption is that they lived in that situation for a very long time.
- The foster said she was house trained, and then the day they were coming, they said ‘by the way, she tends to have accidents.’ It is clear she is not housetrained.
She came to us in the pouring rain and looked like a MOP with paws. She has the sweetest personality for someone who has been locked up for years. The adoption paperwork says her birthday is February 14, 2016 (which is the same day as our boy, Nine, the cat who just left us in March), but that would make her 6 1/2, not 5 1/2. What a very long time to live in those horrible conditions.
1st day home July ’22
They were right about her personality. Mini Cooper, the cat, liked her immediately, Charles, the Pomchi, was OK with a youngster in the house (he’s 14), and after a week or so, even Noel, the Christmas Cat, at 15 1/2, decided that she was OK.
The first order of business was a haircut. After all the hair was gone, the MOP showed us her spots (she looks like an appaloosa). Such a difference. I think she really liked being freed from all those mats. Sonya, who groomed her, said that her feet are burned, most likely from standing in all that uric acid for so long. She doesn’t like them touched much and gave Sonya a fit to trim them, so I try to hold hands with her to get her comfortable with her feet being touched.
Jojo went to the Vet last Monday and we found that she had a fractured molar and several rotted teeth, is overweight at 21 pounds (should be 17 or 18), has an ear infection, some skin problems, and loves everyone. You know what that means: Cytopoint injection for the skin, ear drops twice a day, exercise, and an appointment in October (because that is our Vet dental month with a 10% discount) to fix the teeth.
Even though she is 6 1/2, it is like having a puppy because of her lack of training. I take her out, she pees, and then immediately comes in and pees on the rug. She does not like the feel of grass on her feet (is it totally new to her?) so I am teaching her that it is ok. When she is kenneled and I am not in her line of vision, she screams. There is a lot to learn in this world. She absolutely loves her walks in the morning and wants to constantly go outside with me (though she does nothing but sniff).
She is sweet and loving and happy. Now to teach her what a toy is and how to behave in public.

Oh My Dog! (OMD) That smile almost makes you forget all the accidents in the house!
We are smitten with your smile, Jolie.

For Charles’ birthday (well, maybe more so to help Mom’s heart heal from the loss of so many furbabies over the last few months), a sweet matted soul named Jolie has come to live at the zoo. The minute she got here on Saturday (in the pouring rain, of course), she took over everyone’s heart (and Mini’s couch pillow). Noel is still a little suspect of the new ‘MOP’ in the house but otherwise, she just fit right in as if she had always been here.
I will tell you her story another day, but for now here are the main things we know:
- They said she was a Yorkie mix but she definitely looks like Shih Tzu to me.
- She is 6 years old according to the birth year they gave us, but they said 5, so we are not sure.
- Her birthday is the same day as Nine’s was (Feb 14). Isn’t that a wild coincidence?
- She is way over-weight (over 22 lbs and she should be more like 17 or less).
- She is in desperate need of grooming (Sonya will cut it all off on Thursday).
- They said she was housetrained but she does not have bathroom training as far as we can tell (it is like having a puppy all over again).
- She has the sweetest personality and loves everyone and everything so far.

What a blessing!

Charlie hasn’t been smiling much lately. There hasn’t been a lot to smile about with all his friends passing on and his health. But, maybe Mom can change that soon. This is his birthday week. He will be 14 on Friday.

Noel, the Christmas Cat, here: Mom put the summer curtain up in my herb window because the sun heats up the whole kitchen in the afternoon. She also takes all the plants out of the window so they don’t burn up. I love when she does that. I can sleep in that window for hours and spread out.
Did you know that all the neighbors walk by and look for me in the window? Everyone knows our house as the one with the beautiful white cat in the front window (that’s me).
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I do not know exactly what Noel and Mini Cooper knew, but when they started guarding Louise while she slept, I got nervous. I know that animals are much more in tune with each other than we are with them. They know who is sick and who has something going on long before our senses even begin to wake up. So when the cats gathered around Lulu, I was on alert.

Noel had started to stare at Louise and stay close. That is unusual behavior here at the zoo, though sometimes if Mini can, she will try to lick a dog’s face and ears, which quickly Lulu will tell her to ‘bug off’ and Charles will take a quick snap.
Being the oldest (15 and 3 months), of course, Miss Noel sometimes takes a short nap even while doing an important job..

Lulu is OK. Her condition has not changed that I know of, however, when the animals talk, I really try to listen.
Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Miss Mini Cooper, “The Baby,” turns 8 years young today. It is hard to believe because she is still such a kitten in many ways. Playful and verbose, she is a pal to all and just wants attention and a good cuddle.
Happy Birthday, Baby Girl. We all adore you! (Even Charles)

And we can never forget the animals and humans that have served and continue to serve in the armed services so that we can live freely in this country.

This is the Washington DC area’s first monument honoring women in the military which was unveiled at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery in October 2020. It is called ‘The Pledge.’
Commissioned by the nonprofit US War Dogs Association and sculpted by acclaimed artist Susan Bahary, The Pledge is a bronze statue that depicts a kneeling servicewoman locking eyes with her working military dog.
In addition to being the DC area’s first statue to honor all servicewomen, the statue is also the first monument in the nation to honor female military working dog handlers.
