Sometimes we think that Mom thinks we are just statues to sit in the garden with her flowers. It has been raining for 15 straight days now, so getting out, even for a little while, is worth it. Mom had a good crop of iris this year. There is only one peach colored iris amongst the bunch. With so much rain everything is green and soggy. That makes for happy plants, Mom says. And smelly dogs.

Did you know that this is the earliest spring in our lives. That’s right, thanks to a leap year weirdness the equinox is 2 days earlier (March 19 or 20 depending on your timezone) than it used to be. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac equinoxes and solstices are happening earlier and earlier every year because of how leap year is calculated. When I was little it was always March 21st, this year it was on March 19. That means this was the earliest spring since 1896.
I will let The Almanac explain Why Spring Begins Early This Year
It all happens because the number of days in a year isn’t even. A year lasts 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. Call it 365.2422 days. If only the year were 11 minutes longer, or 365.25000 days, we could simply add one day every fourth year and take care of the fraction forever.
But because Earth spins a hair less than 365 ¼ times per year, we must sometimes omit that extra once‑every‑four‑year day, and that’s what creates all this fussing. Skip three leap years every four centuries and you’re accurate to one day in about 3300 years. (We even deal with THAT little glitch by skipping February 29 in the year 4000.)
A calendar that doesn’t accurately divide days into the year starts going weirdly out of sync. Seasons start happening at odd times. In the previous Julian calendar (where all century years were leap years) the annual 11‑minute error accumulated to where equinoxes were happening around March 11. The Easter Bunny was hopping around in the snow!
The present calendar takes care of everything. This leap year will make 2016 have the earliest seasons of our lives (thus far!).
But Louise and Sofie don’t know that spring was early. They just want to chase the ducks. Have a great day!

We are so excited that we can sleep out in the spring sun again. The deck is warm, though wet, on a spring afternoon. I am finding all these really cool things that I lost in the yard over the winter. I even brought Mom a squirrel bone yesterday, but she made me drop it and threw it away. I don’t see why I can’t eat dead smelly animals? It is my yard! – Sofie Bear (aka Soda Pop)

I’ve been noticing that Sofie is always sideways or upside down. Is that a submissive thing or is she just being silly? Louise, on the other hand, tends to have this look in most of the pictures like I have really ticked her off: “Oh, Mom, will you stop with all these pictures already!” Capturing the blond and black in a way that works in pictures has it’s challenges. Half the time if I have Sofie’s coloring right, Louise’s eyes disappear in her beautiful darkness. When I get Lulu right, Sofie seems over exposed.
They are a lesson in contrast, not only in fur color but in personalities. Sofie walks off lead and stays close, Lulu is on a harness with a heavy leash (she is unpredictable and easily distracted). Sofie barks at everything and whines and whines and whines, Louise only barks when she has something important to say. Thunder unnerves Sofie, but not Louise. Louise loves her kennel and at bedtime she opens her kennel door, goes in by herself (I think she would close it on her own too if I taught her how), eats her cookie, and goes right to sleep. Sofie has to be bribed to go in her kennel anytime and puts up a big fuss at bedtime (“No! I am not eating my bedtime cookie because I do not want to go to sleep. I am on strike! Blah, blah, blah, whine, whine, whine). I love my studies in contrasts.

Louise: “Mom, could you please tell her not to touch me!”
Sofie: “Ah, Gee Louise, I just like to tick you off”
Louise: “Mom! Mom! Make her stop!”
So much for a peaceful Sunday morning watching TV.
